Jet, a retired cyborg cop in the anime series Cowboy Bebop relaxes with his bonsai. Being a beatnic bohemian poet, a bonsai makes a great pet - easy to find someone who will look after it. I taught myself from books so YouTube is just way cool

How much time is needed to take care of it? I'm a highschool student, so I have a lot of free time ;D
i think its a bit of a cruelty. Growing them for aesthetic purposes rather than what they are meant for. Stunting and forcing them into shapes and sizes we desire is being unfair to their original design.
@mercturd85 Haha wow, you are stupid. You are so narrow minded that you think anyone who grows bonsai must be old or small, and non-threatening. You couldnt be more wrong, and are just advertising your ignorance on the internet. Well done tough guy.

@mercturd85 Thanks for reminding us of the lengths youtube trolls will go to, to find people to annoy. Sometimes we productive and decent folk forget just how shallow and meaningless the lives of so many people are. While i was eating an apple I got the idea of growing my own bonsai tree, so, would it work with an apple tree? And do I HAVE to grow it them re-plant it or can I plant it in good then shape it as it's growing?
ever here of a monkey pod rain tree? I bought some seeds, ones sprouting up to about 4inches now.. Little to my knowing at the time they get up to 80 feet!!! tall, I live in North America, it wont stay alive outside.. Can I bonsai it? and when would u start?
Hi i literally bought a bonsai today already planted and apparently about 14 years old. this is my first tree and im very keen on getting into the art. but can somebody please explain to me what the wire was used for clearly shown at 1:25 do all trees need this? and obviously i do not want to take mine out of its soil yet as i dont know what i will do to it lol, does my tree have some sort of wire hidden in the soil? sorry if this is all a bit stupid.
Look, I did not intend to be rude. Good on the guy for making the effort, and yes, it is a great video for beginners. But it is under the banner of "Expert Village", which is both mis-leading and frustrating.
In my humble opinion, if you want to see true bonsai, run a search in Google video "Masahiko Kimura" "bonsai".
You don't know what your doing the tree should be planted off center and towards the back of the pot. broom/unbrella styles= cop out! to gain maximum stability you need to wire the tree into the pot and for maximum style wire the branches.
how long do bonsai take to grow from seed. aldi are selling a starter kit for 99p an u get soil and pot an all tht shit. also coffee tree, orange tree aswell.
I break this rule myself all the time, especially because bonsai pots aren't cheap and the right one is hard to find. But the pot should be only as thick as the thickest part of the trunk at the base. So for example, that pot is about 4 times too large for that tree.

@MattTheGuitarGuy to ikeep it huid you need to keep water close to it, but not inside the pot or on the tree, you can also spray the tree with a thin mist but not too often.
Your video skipped the point when you inserted the wires into the pot How did you place them and are you twisting them around the roots? or the Feeder root? how is the wire holding the tree straight?
I noticed that you've put this tree in the centre of the nabe. I imagine that your teacher did not teach you traditional placement. One is never to place a tree in the centre of a nabe, as god resides in there. Traditionally speaking.

It's an intentionally stunted tree. They're used for decorating gardens and homes. They look like full grown trees, but are small.
