The Republicans have no leg to stand on; one woman senator said "The Democrats have said to senior citizens - Drop Dead!". Other comments have been just as charming. And now they're saying a Democrat should apologize for sounding like them. Maybe they're offended because of copyright infringement....
I don't hear much about the Democrats being the barrier to progress. Oh, that's right it would guarantee that everyone (Rep/Dem) were held accountable.
Grayson for president...it is a holocaust.. did you hear the valley boy reporter, memememe, gosh darn wimp...people shoud be flocking to their city halls, and getting on their political leaders like white on rice
"Die quickly" Isn't he saying what the Republicans have been saying for this entire discussion? Death camps, and the such, with the "duty to die quickly" under "socialized medicine". I remember laughing at those claims, but not saying "you should apologize."
finallly!!! a democrat who's not trying to be bipartisan. where has bipartisanship got obama and the democrats so far? no where. all the democrats are kissing the feet of republicans when they are in the position of power. A SUPER MAJORITY IN THE SENATE. we've had 8 years of a republican based agenda, and that didn't seem to work. SO why not try a new agenda? an agenda for working people. an agenda for poor people. possible answer: we aren't living in a democracy. we're living in an oligarchy.
Nah, we're living obviously living in a welfare state. Corporate Welfare Nanny State Booya! But on a more serious note, the answer is spineless leadership on the part of Pelosi and Reid. Any health care (different from health insurance) reform that doesn't spell the death of health insurance will be a massive subsidy to the insurance companies. The mere notion that care is so expensive to require insurance before one can even afford a physical is ridiculous.
i dont care about democrats or republicans. im tired of seeing this dude on my tv 50000 times the past 2 days. this is like wrestling here's hulk hogan i'm surprised macho man didnt rush the podium. oh wait he did just let me watch the republican newes channels. dumb ass public. just making his vid count go up. lol

if he did he would of been more firm on the public option before letting it get killed by the 5 two-faced democratic senators on the Senate Finance Committee.
darkally is correct, the republicans have done nothing to reform healthcare. they had all of the opportunities, but instead chose to plunge America into deep debt with a meaningless war against a country that didn't attack us.
the repugnicants set health on its downward spiral back in the nixon years.. nixon and henry kaiser put profits first and doomed millions and millions of Americans.

Rep. Plan for Healthcare: Go see your doctor, pay him for his services, pay him well, live long
Dem. plan for Healthcare: Come see us, give us your money, watch us waste it, wait a long time, get shoddy care, maybe get better, maybe not, die young.
yea, and if you can't afford a doctor it is YOUR OWN FAULT and people who are not rich and bigot deserve to die anyhow, like those 44million US-CITIZENS
The only problem is: USA gets billions of dollars from other countries as a UN tax for "rebuilding Afghanistan". Millions of Americans are employed in the armed forces and military industry, you know, manufacturing stuff called "weapons". Sure, you can get the same stimulating effect by employing them in, oh, building bridges and stuff like that, but that would be dimmed as "government spending". And would be shunned by conservaDems and Republicans.
The Bible clearly states that Jesus ordered his flock gathered unto him to cast aside the wretched poor people and give all their valuables to the corporate oligarchy. This new Holyland shall be called America. Amen.

Words mean what people think they mean. Not what they used to mean hundreds of years ago, or what is written in some etymology dictionary. Get a grip on how language works.
"A few people"? No one understand the word holocaust the way you do. No one. It has become synonymous with the word genocide. This IS language. It is alive and growing, and words change their meanings all the time. So when I tell you to screw yourself, I don't believe you'll use a screwdriver to do it, but hey, feel free to understand that word as originally intended, and don't forget to youtube the results of your effort.
Even people who understands the etymology of this word don't use it that way, and don't understand it that way when they hear it. You know anyone who still thinks "gay" means "happy"? I don't. You have no idea how much language can change in 60 years, especially in today's fast moving world. Again, you don't understand how language evolves and how it works, or maybe you just hate the fact that people bother to remember one of the most horrible events in human history.
Not at all, we have a hebrew word to refer specifically to the event, Shoah.
Perhaps you didn't grow up in the late cold war, where holocaust was constantly used to refer to the effects of a nuclear confrontation. That was only 30 years ago.
I understand how language evolves naturally and I also understand how words are co-opted to control our thought processes.
I'm a Hebrew speaker so I know that word (which, BTW, used to mean simply "a disaster", but no one uses it like that anymore). In Hebrew, shoah is also used in the nuclear context: "Shoah Garinit". So there's very little difference between English and Hebrew in that regard. There's no giant bogeyman trying to make up new meanings for words just to scare you. Get over it already.
I don't mind the word holocaust used to describe the total annihilation that comes from a nuclear war. Nor do I mind it being used in reference to the Armenian Holocaust, the genocide in Darfur etc. But using it every time more than three people die is like killing a bug with an atomic bomb.
Yes, hyperbole is in every discourse today, point taken.
Grayson's point seems to have been that our total failure of a healthcare system (best in the world my ass) should be considered a tragedy on the par with violent devastation.
"Tragedy" would certainly have been a less controversial choice, and have been quite accurate.
But it won't get the youtube hits and discussion that the more extreme language brings, I guess there IS too much hasbara on all sides.
there was Attaturk's Armenian holocaust in the early 20th century preceding the "Showa" in the 40's. And then there was rwanda. not to mention the systematic eradication of native Americans and native Australians.
it's a loaded word. I wouldn't have used it, but I support Alan Grayson on this issue.
again, I would not have used the word. and in general conversation, the "holocaust" refers to the "Showa" holocaust perpetrated by the nazis against Jews. however, it is accurate to describe the turkish genocide of armenians as a holocaust, and I would extend the term to the elimination of 500 native American nations and tens of millions of native Americans. it's also stupid and pointless to argue semantics when clearly you dutch have a different connection to thst part of history than us.

Holocaust is not only related to Jewish people you know (or perhaps you don't)
newsweekrocks 2 years ago 10
Yeah, holocaust is a co-opted buzz word.
Holo = entire, Caustus = burning, like a HoloGram is a drawing of the entire object.
It just means a "total burning", and was once used to refer to the burnt sacrifices of ancient religions.
Y'know, "a sweet savour unto the Lord" and all that.

"people" is vast.

No giant boogeyman, just the Ministry of Truth.
If you'll look back I cited the hebrew word "calamity" in previous posts.
So, you accept and openly state that neither the word holocaust nor shoah are exclusively used to refer to the nazi persecution.
This in itself dismantles your original objection.
So what's the problem? There's no copyright on the word, get over it.
