in this day with suply prices ya have to charge at least $12 unless its something small and hand made pottery for $5 then $7 what a joke the buyer dosent know how lucky they were it was under $20
I used to fantasize about an art fair where the artists would be allowed to say anything we want to the patrons, sort of like that one restaurant where the servers abuse the patrons. That thought makes me smile....
How much is that mug? Well, because you wore that disgusting painted sweatshirt, I just doubled the price. Triple for "Santa's Little Helper"
The old Piedmont Park show in Atlanta was a dead week sandwiched between two busy weekends of sales. One year someone got the bright idea to pass around a "chain letter". When it got to you, you added your business card to the chain, and wrote on the back your favorite customer comment (it had to be true). At the end, they cut the chain into four or five six foot lengths and posted it to a telephone pole. The results were hilarious.
If you enjoyed this video, POTTER AT AN ART FAIR, please watch two related videos on this channel: ART FAIR APPLICATION and ART FAIR NEIGHBORS. Enjoy!
the use of the text reader to make it 'emotionless' works fantastically. the focus on the language and meaning of the interchanges is heightened because of the 'straight delivery.' it is all about the ideas w/o the distraction of theatrics (and even fancy animation).
yeeeeaaahhhhhhhh..I was once "offered" that $5 for a drawing I had in a show! As a weaver, I have never come up with a totally satisfying come-back to people who think that, as long as I m using a loom and a shuttle 'it's NOT HANDweaving. deep sigh!
I think it's more like "once EACH art fair", instead of "once while at an art fair".
When customers try to bargain, I RAISE the price. Then they say "But the sticker says ..." And I respond "You're the one who implied that the sticker price wasn't the selling price."
what do you mean you have met this customer, i am this customer. i go from booth to booth asking the same questions. sometimes i get so drunk that i have to read from notecards so i wont lose my place in the conversation an the vender wont be offended by my lack of focus. just kidding i will be back later to finish our conversation.
Today was the PERFECT day for me to receive this from my pottery guild - the day after the first Christmas Fair I've participated in since 1995 - and they haven't changed - and I'm just older so find it even harder to stay positive. I'll be thinking of this video at the next fair and smiling - and the customer will NEVER know why. Thank you.
I've got to admit, I'm a pain in butt crafts fair attendee! I like to ask the artists all about their pieces, and have them explain the process as I smile and admire their art. But once they suggest a price or ask my interest in buying, I get flustered and say that I'll think about it and return later, but often never do decide to buy them. Or spend a ton of time hanging around, looking thru every print in a pile, for example, but in the end sneaking away while they talk to next potential cu
@wendym1234: Artists love questions about our art!!! In fact for many of us, the most exciting thing is talking about it. We are also aware that people want to look around and most don't come back to buy something...but when they do, we're so honored to have a piece of our soul being shared with you and to have it find another home.
I believe this video is more focused on the fact that people are unaware that there is a difference between hand made, machine made and 'slave labor' made. Here in America, artist's are blessed to have the chance to be paid appropriately for our art. Machines and 'slave labor' by third world &/or Communist countries always cost less.
"How long did it take you to make this?...It took me 30 years." ROFL!!!!!!!!!!
Rest assure, when you buy a 'Colleen Fehrenbach', you get a one of a kind piece of art that took years of learning, practice and talent put into it :~)
Oh! Or the other one I got which was just funny. Sometimes the customer does get that the piece was made by a local artist, and they think it elevates their status to know the artist:
customer 1 (to their friend): Oh I know this artist. She is very good friends with my daughter, they went to highschool together. Actually She came over to our house last week for dinner.
Customer 2(the friend): Wow...
Me (to customer 1, in my very male voice): Wow indeed... What did you serve me at dinner?"
Ain't that the truth dude! I wish some of mine had talked so much. Most pick it up, turn it over, see the price, and set it down. I told them they weren't gonna get Wal*Mart prices when I was workin there!!!
hmm I guess I can expect this next year. Sounds like fun. rolls eyes. I'll let the girlfriend do all the talking while i bite my tongue and try out the pottery world soon enough.
Happens at every art fair. Can relate and laugh, though sad those who attend to buy don't appreciate hard work and effort to create. Cringe every time my daughter has to deal with one of these customers and yet smile and be polite; all the while knowing her products are already underpriced for original works of handmade art.
