Most people get them because they are cheap to buy but soon realise they can't tame them and they cost abit more money to keep due to their size what they grow into... I have a Nile monitor that has it's ups and downs. Taking it out a lot and handling it often calms it down and let's it know you mean no harm. After you hold her for a few minutes she is completely fine. They are unbelievably strong and have huge claws that tear your arms up, bit in the long run they are a joy to have and of course they are fun to scare your friends with.

anyone see that ron harris guy. He had 7 of these just roaming about his flat. He got bitten by one, a day later the bacetrial infection kicked in. He collapsed on the ground. Was munched on for a week until the police found what was left of his carcass.
His name was Ron Huff. Animal Planet made it sound like he was killed by the lizards but according to news articles that would have been very unlikely. The cause of death was unknown. The Nile Monitors did eat the body after it was already dead however. On Animal Planet's website they even call them Komodo Dragons! Whatever they need to do for ratings I guess...

i have a 5' iguana and he used act real big when i let him roam around the house and when i go to pick him up he gets real aggressive. After awhile of regularly letting him roam and me picking him up every 30min. he's gotten much more submissive to just letting me pick him up. This is probably common with all big reptiles. Most likely the reptile is just young and doesnt know that your not a threat. Give it time

Does anyone know if this particular species requires vivication (ie; the movement of food, the need for live food, the need for the food to be shaken or twitch or something) for it to feed? Or can it eat dead food? Does it have to pick up the movement to instigate feeding - or does it just take any?

The Nile Monitors did eat the body after it was already dead however. On Animal Planet's website they even call them Komodo Dragons! Whatever they need to do for ratings I guess...

i have a 5' iguana and he used act real big when i let him roam around the house and when i go to pick him up he gets real aggressive. After awhile of regularly letting him roam and me picking him up every 30min. he's gotten much more submissive to just letting me pick him up. This is probably common with all big reptiles. Most likely the reptile is just young and doesnt know that your not a threat. Give it time

Does anyone know if this particular species requires vivication (ie; the movement of food, the need for live food, the need for the food to be shaken or twitch or something) for it to feed? Or can it eat dead food? Does it have to pick up the movement to instigate feeding - or does it just take any?
