She has a nice-sounding chest voice, but absolutely no head voice... Even when it's not out of tune, it's breathy and barely audible. So naturally, she pushes her chest voice too high to try to avoid using her head voice, and sings out of tune in her chest voice as well. She needs to work on her technique!

First of all, when she (tries) to hit the highest notes, it sounds like she's screaming underwater.

And secondly, I think she's really setting a bad image, at least sometimes. Her biggest fans are little (and easily impressed) girls. Those girls look up to her, and want to be like Katy. She's being an example to sooo many girls, that it's really bad for her to wear those little skimpy skirts that reveal wayyy to much cleavage. And don't even get me started on the Sesame Street dress.. -_-

@amy19me she has trouble singing the high notes (like for a soprano) the other ones are ok. I tried singing the song and its quite a bit difficult because it moves from high to low. The high notes work for me better. A great singer would be able to perform this song to its best, and youre right she is bad live for the most part.

@falskhet1, Have you tried running around trying to dance AND sing. It's very tireing. That's probably why she sounds a little breathy and cracks. And she probably has to run on stage for ages. To have a really good show and dance as well as sing you have to be super fit.

@missalexandria93, she definately does not look nervous on stage. As a voice instructor, from the sound of her voice you can clearly tell that she is a natural alto. Yet she is singing songs out of her voice range. This is why her voice gets very soft at the higher notes or when she drops out of singing completely. It's not a knock on her, it's an observation. I wouldn't care if she uses autotuning or not; that's the technology of today for you.

I enjoy listening to her studio songs however this performance ruined "Teenage dream" for me. After watching a few videos of live performances on YouTube I can honestly say that I think she is a horrible live singer. She cracks all the time and she sings really false, and it's even her own song. I'm not saying that I could do it any better, I'm just stating my opinion.

It's called an opinion. Most people who are singers today didn't have to work at all to stand where they are now. Anyone can have an amazing singing voice in a recording studio – and they completely changed her voice in the studio songs. I think she's beautiful and all that but she can't sing. And I highly doubt she worked "really hard" to become a famous singer, but that does not change her horrible live singing voice.

I HATE how she always seems to do worse for the performances that air on Television in the U.S. I hear hear some of her performances in other countries or on tour and she sounds great.
