The Nature Conservancy man was right: the survivability of this majestic species calibrates the long term survivability of the broader ecology man depends on. Palm (tree & oil), by the way, is just another fossil fuel (though still un-fossilized); it is not infinitely renewable as people erroneously believe. Photosynthesis & its by-products, dependent on a chain of events/processes, in the larger scheme of Earth's ecosystems, have limits, albeit a bit too subtle for most people to understand.
