I am very sorry for your loss and the resulting difficulties of having to deal with the aftermath. Mental disorders are brain disorders, they are no different than other biological disorders. I am a hoarder and I don't let people in either. There are crime scene clean-up crews that I would recommend for people to use after the fact if you could afford it. I consulted a group to help me and for my 1,100 square foot house they estimated $3,000. dollars to help me do the job in 3 days with my input
wow..it took me a week to clean out my mothers trailer and she is still alive. hoarding is a disorder. I fought her all the way. I got rid of over a 100 porcelain dolls not worth anything. 10 boxes of canned food and food from freezers. 6 broke down computers. It was disgusting.
I am dealing with a similar situation myself right now, Working TWO jobs i have little time to be organized and my bedroom is beginning to develop piles of things i need to get to like laundry, and things i need to sort thru like paperwork etc, I have NEVER been a disorganized person but i see myself heading in that direction already because of lack of time, Thanx for this video its a wake up call to MAKE the time somehow someway and get things done before they spiral out of control!
Wow! Thanks for this! This is horrible and many things can trigger the beginning of this behavior, Its not all caused by ONE thing, Depression can lead to it, Excessively collecting can lead to it, Picking up every piece of junk on the street because it may have other uses can lead to it, Sometimes GREED can lead to it, Sometimes becoming easily attached to material things leads to it, Many many things lead to losing control and losing common sense!
I'm so sorry about the loss of your uncle. I'm also sorry no one was around to see (or care) what was happening to him and his apartment. Let that be a lesson to all of us.
Believe me, you wouldn't want to keep anything after being in there. The only thing my parents took was a washing machine and a electric scooter thing that weren't kept in that apartment, sort of an attached laundry room for all the apartments to share.
OH MY GOD! My gramma's house is just as bad! Fortunately, she's still alive though.
She wouldn't let us clean it, so we had to trick her to leave with my sister on a fishing trip one weekend so we could go in and clean her house. It took about 36 hours of straight labor.
She had 5 pickup trucks worth of newspapers and magazines. Trash was everywhere, and the pots on her stove were covered with maggots.
I really sympathize with you. Sorry about your uncle.
...newspapers and magazines are extremely valuable commodities especially in big quantities.
Simply put we could all look at this phenomenon as a tool for healing our collective cultures.
Hoarding is seeing value in every thing. ...a much more heathy attitude than putting out garbage every week.
We COULD think of houses like this as mines and set about mining safely these commodities rather than levelling forests and creating big cavities in the earth called mines.
They tried to bill us for it, but we had hardly ever met him, my brother had actually never ever met him. And rarely my dad was the only one to stop by in the last 10 years when he found out where he was living (they had some falling out or something 30 years ago), but even he had never seen inside. The owners where supposed to do monthly inspections and said he would never let them in or would not answer the door.
So it's actually there fault for not inspecting the place for years. So legally they where to blame and didn't try to take it further then that and accepted it was there problem to fix.
My Dad (85), Mom(80) and brother(51 and handicapped) currently live in a nightmare worse than your Uncle, plus 4 storage units, an SUV half full, Dad's truck 100% full, my other brother's house partly full(I am yet to see it) and my van one-quarter full. All spaces made empty are quickly refilled. Aprox. $50,000 spent so far on storage units and now it's over $1,100 per month. Like I said, a nightmare!
@maniac1075 I realize it's been a few years since you shot this video, but I'm curious as to how long it took you to clean it all up. How many people were involved in the cleanup?
No idea, it was signed over to the real estate agent due to them supposed to have been checking the condition of the apartments and failing to do so. There was nothing really worth salvaging, so it was given to the agent to clean out.
3 siblings took what they wanted out of the house(electronics) all furniture was donated. The warehouses were extensive. We put an ad in paper to sell truck and donated the rest. We had so much stuff it was hard to get someone to take it all so we donated some here and some there. Nice stuff, some never used ,an entire restaurat kitchen about 6 garage bays full! I am not kidding. I wish I had a little of it now, but i lived out of state and it was hard to transport.
Wow, thanks a million for sharing your experience with me and others!!!!! If you think of anything else to say, I'm interested. I'm very interested in how family member "feel" about all the collected stuff and their system of dejunking. When I see the videos I get super interested, then I remember all of my Dad's junk and his lack of motivation for living normal and how long it will take me to fix it all...
This was many months ago, we just ended up turning the place over to the real estate and let them take care of it. My suggestion was to burn the place down, but it has about 5 other apartments attached to it.

"This is not something for public entertainment purposes.." LOL! If it's on Youtube or tv, it's entertainment.

Yeah, but he would stand at the door, never allowing anyone to go in, let alone even see inside.

Burn? You idiot, that would be be worse.
I say scoop it up as a whole, wrap it up and send it to our enemy via ship. Consider it tactical biological warfare

Did you incur any charges related to the cleanup even after turning everything over to the real estate company?

Sounds like my in-laws storage bill. When last one died, it took a lot of man power to get rid of everything(money too)
criticalgal 3 years ago
can you go into more detail? how many hours/days did the clean up take and how many people were involved? The cost?
I hope to turn the junk into money from many trips to auctions. or flea markets, but auctions are 10 times faster.
