@MasterAnemos Being a fan of Hoff's and Rob's performances, I believe they approached Hyde in different ways. Rob approaches Hyde as a poetic demon, while Hoff sees Hyde as a cold, unfeeling, yet with a demonic sense of humor. SO you really can't compare the two performances...
@Broadwaypuppet Actually, I think MasterAnemos has a point. Though the truth of the matter is that they are both good, Hasselhoff displays greater acting ability whereas Rob uses a far better singing ability.
@TrumpetLullaby yeah, I guess. I guess I just couldn't cope with the fact that Rob's acting wasn't the best there was. He certainly has improved, considering this was his first big Broadway show, and he later went on to play Jean val Jean and Kerchack, but you're right. But I will say that Rob had the best "Transformation" in terms of the pain he simulated so well, and his acting considerably improves as Hyde and when he's singing!
@Broadwaypuppet "Eminent churchman and philanthropist...who does not know Rupert 14th Bishop of Basingstoke, our fair city's most distinguished, degenerate, OBSCENE AND MALIGNANT HYPORCRITE!" Sorry I love this show with a burning passion.
first hyde to hit that high not onstage!!! LUV IT!!! Also, Evan took over the role full time on my 1ST BIRTHDAY!!! HOW MUCH MORE AWESOME CAN YOU GET?!?!?!?!
I love that he holds the sword stick up when he says "conquer all the odds"! And for all of u that think I'm annoying commenting on how good Rob is every week, then let's just say this; I LOVE every aspect of Rob Evan's performance in these roles! :)
@xvader123123 you are so right. Rob her OWNS Jekyll/Hyde! anyone know how to get the DVD version of the musical with rob Evan as the star? Hasselhoff wasn't bad but Evan was just so much better
I got to this video from the Hasselhoff one! I couldn't stop smiling, and then I realized how weird it was that I was smiling. xD
This is basically the coolest thing I've ever seen. The Robert Cuccioli one is great too, but he doesn't go for a high note at the end and the fire doesn't look as good. =P
*spazzes* Rob. Okay Im officially tied between two hydes. Cuccoili, and Evan. Not sure which one I like second best. First best is Warlow. Definitely. *facepalm* God. I love Hyde...
I saw this show in Louisville in 1999, I think. I don't remember the cast, but I know that the special effects were more impressive than the Broadway version, which is REALLY disappointing. I watch this scene now and sigh because the fire is so obviously shot up from the stage in front of the actor. In the version I saw his cloak was actually set on fire and then when the stage went black they'd just flip it back on itself and smother the flames.
While I don't think anyone will ever displace Cuccioli as the Jekyll/Hyde of my heart, Evan is fantastic. I particularly like how he did the sign of the cross over the bishop. Wonderfully sacriligious, and I hadn't seen that before.
That's because he got more into the role. lots of movement. not like the other actors that just went through like a robot crossed with a goat "cough" Hoff "cough"
Excuse me guys, I meant to say he hits it higher in a certain performance from Broadway, which I can't upload at the moment (because it's on cassette). But he does hit it about equal in the Soundboard from Pre-Broadway. I uploaded his Alive Reprise from that awhile back, if you want to hear it.
Evan could afford to hit that A at the end of the song because he didn't go on every night -- He was merely an understudy, and didn't have to worry so much about vocal stamina.
Cuccioli probably knew that hitting that A would be overshooting himself, as he DID have to sing the entire score for 8 shows a week.
Rob Evan was actually the lead from January 1999 to January 2000. Just for the record. He was also the understudy, and alternate throughout the Broadway run.
Well also Evan is a Tenor and Cuccioli is a bari-bass. Plus Rob Evan was the alternate. He pretty much was all the matinees so he did get a good 4 or more shows a week.
I think Cuccioli is a baritone with some nice tenor notes. I've heard him sing a few things outside of J%H (which is unfortunate, I wish he'd have been recorded more!) and he definitely has some impressive high notes.
Cuccioli did not perform the show 8 times a week. He did the evening performances and Rob Evan as the alternate did the afternoon shows. And just for the record they were both spectacular!
Cuccili did not do the Original Concept Album. That actually was Anthony Warlowe. And the note in question is an Tenor A (A4 for those musically inclined)
Sorry bro, but you are wrong. Because the "Complete Work" is called "Jekyll & Hyde: The Gothic Musical Thriller (1994 CONCEPT Cast)." Then again, I am taking my marching orders from Frank Wildhorn's website, but what does he know? He only wrote the darn thing.
I should just listen to every halfwit who tries to trump me on youtube, really.
Ah ? My apologies ! I believe it was sir Danvers because in the book Hyde kill a man called like this using his cane just like he does in the musical.
Actually he has a Theatrical flash gun concealed in his hand which he sets off towards a flame bar concealled in the false stage. All thats in the bottle is water. trust me im a profesional pyrotechnition who worked on the 1997 broadway production in the plymouth theatre
THANK YOU I have been looking for this one for the longest time, to see how he did his performance in this. Honestly though i like of liked how Hoff hitted the bishop with the cane, but i loved how in the beatings, Hyde loosed his hat
I think he did an admirable job! Anyone who does not think that this is a spinto tenor role is deluded! All of the repertoire requires constant "G's-Ab's". Now, if a barione can manage this then power to him! I think that singing the "A" an octave lower would detract from the intensity! Ah Hasselfoffhater, I would kill for the baritone repertoire! At least the majority of your roles are not "limp wristed, gathering nuts in may" type characters!
