I'm considering buying an Olympus E-510. Is there any problem with buying an Olympus Evolt 510? I believe this is the American version, but I'm keen to know if I'd have any problems bearing in mind I live in the uk. Please advise. Thanks in advance
hi, ur review abt e510 is very helpful and I have decided to buy it. I have a question, if I buy a brand new e510 with 2 lens kit and the kit does not include any memory card, then can I take photos right after unpacking the camera or I have to buy a memory card before i could take any picture. Is there any built in memory or card in e510. Thanks in advance
I also wanted to ask, is it much difference in shooting speeds with flash on between Canon, Olympus and Nikon(dslr e510, 400 or 450d, and d40x)? Are they all close to the same speed and i am comming from p&s or zoom cameras.
Hi, that's a lot of questions! Please check out the full reviews at cameralabs . com on the models you're interested in, then feel free to post any questions in the cmaeralabs forum.
I see where the lens dictates what camera i buy. I like the lightweight of the 410 and 510. IQ is very important and i like Canon the best in iq. Generally, are the Canon lens more expensive than the Olympus lens? When you are in live view(Olympus) and click this onto auto focus, does it always make that loud noise? Can i turn the noise off? What lens would be good for small birds at about 2 to 5 feet away on tripod? Olympus and Canon? Do you prefer a certain brand for macro(Cameras)?
A200 ,the Olympus E510 or The Canon Digital Rebel XT. I can not go for the Xti because it is out of my budget. So which one of these three is my best choice??
Hi, have a look at the verdict page of our A200 review at the Cameralabs website! That should help you decide, and if you've any other Qs, feel free to post on the Cameralabs forums!
I'm interested in buying the E420. The current lens's seem relatively slower than the traditional film slr's, so I'm wondering how critical is having anti-shake in your opinon? Trade-offs! Anti shake vs. size. Any idea if they'll build in anti shake into their probably e430 in the fall?
E430?!! They haven't even got the E420 in the shops yet! Who knows if they'll squeeze anti shake into that small body in the future - maybe, maybe not. I suspect not. So it all depends on how much you want or need anti shake. Remember no-one had it a few years ago and coped fine! And you could always fit one of the stabilised Leica lenses if you really want IS.
Hello there, your evaluation of the Leica lens on the various Olympus bodies (Inc. Olympus E 410, (website) clarified your point. Certainly, this is an expensive lens, and perhaps I should consider the Oly 510. I need to see how cumbersome the auto focus on the 510 is vs.the e420. Their perfect e430 will have 2.7 articulating LCD and image stabilization, same small size as the e420. Santa Clause, maybe next year (: You have clarified so much , thank's for the GREAT youtube demos & website!
Thank you for sharing this instructional video with us. I have an E-510 and am pleased with the results that it returns and once I've mastered all of it's capability I'll get the full satisfaction of the DSLR experience!
Thanks again! I'm subscribing to your channel in appreciation for your time and your help as well as what I believe is a love of the craft (or the art) of photography.
I initially wanted to get the E-410 since it had live view but then along came E-510 with IS..now I am torn between E-510 and the Pentax K10D..both of them come with dual lens kit and both of them are pretty cheap for DSLRs in the 10MP range...The Pentax seems like a better feature packed camera albeit not having live view...just wondering which one would you choose and why? :)
Hmm, good question - of the two, I'd go with whichever looks and feels best in your own hands. There's owners of both on the Cameralabs forum if you fancy asking there...
Haha...its almost seems like you dont want to take sides with any one of these cameras! :) K10D looks and feels more professional..though both of these, I would think, are pretty entry level. I love the fact that K10D has an lcd on the top showing the settings which looks cool..but thats just pure aesthetics. Still not decided on which one to buy...will most probably side with the E-510..not a lot of people have been able to give exact details on which one is better and thats understandable.
Seriously when the features are reasonably close, it really does boil a great deal down to look and feel - and lens selection of course. There's other aspects though: the E510 has better dust reduction, but the K10D has better weather sealing. And of course the E510 has Live View... so you'll have to weigh up that too.
hey while searching about the Olympus e510 i have found that the viewfinder of this cam is very small and dark as in comparison with others..is this so?..have u guys ever faced any such problem while using this cam or finding it comfortable?...according to you which cam shall i go for canon eos 400d or olympus e-510??..and does e-510 have got live view option????
Hi, yep, the viewfinder is smaller than other DSLRs... but it's a personal thing if this bothers you. As for Live View, I demonstrated it on the video, above! Check the verdict page of our E510 review at Cameralabs . com to compare it against the Canon... there's a link to the right of the video above.
I got the E-510 since Olympus dropped the prices on this one and have started concentrating on the E-420. It definitely seems like a very good buy but as you have mentioned I am only worried about the lens prices..guess I would have to limit to 1 set of lenses per 2 years. But a great camera E-510 nevertheless.
The longer the focal length, the more you'll be able to blur the background, and the more flattering the perspective, so of the two lenses, I'd use the 50-150mm (do you mean the 40-150mm?). It will be great for portraits set between 50 and 75mm. See our portrait workshop on dslrtips . com.
hey, hum could you help me with something, I'm going to buy my first D-slr and i have 3 in mind the olympus E-510 the canon 400d or the nikon D40x.. i really love the olympus's looks and the features seem really amazing but then because canon and nikon are known as the world best photography company's its makes me rather confused!! i seriously don't know where to turn! oh and another thing i love portrait photography (studio work) is this camera a good choice?!?
Hi! Click the link to the right of the video to go to the full review at the Cameralas site, then check out the Verdict page - we've compared the features of all the models you're considering there!
When you turn the manual focusing ring it activates a motor to adjust the focus of the lens. It feels different to 100% mechanical systems, kind of like power steering in a way. You can still manually focus precisely, it just feels different. If you're really into manual focus, I'd recommend trying it out first.
The E-510 offers shutter speeds from 1/4000 to 60 seconds plus a Bulb option up to eight minutes. See our full review at the Cameralabs site for all details - there's a link to the right of the video window...
Any word on the new models that Olympus might release? I havent seen anything on the Olympus website, but you probably have some "inside knowledge" the consumers dont know. I'd like to get the E-510, but not right before something better comes out. Thanks.
Well most manufacturers would have announced new products at the PMA show last week, but Olympus didn't show any new DSLRs. The E-510 isn't even one year old yet though, so it would be surprising to have a replacement this soon... maybe Photokina show in September...
Just wondering, is a lens from the e-500 compatible with the e-510.. and also, you said the manual focusing is off with the e510? I've been shooting with the e-500 for about 7 months and I'm satisfied with it, I just want to upgrade. Good idea?
Yep, all Four Thirds lenses - ie those you have for your E-500 - will work on the E-510. And if you're happy with the manual focusing on the E-500, then it'll be fine here. Note there may be some new models announced in the next week or so, but it's still a good choice...
I know I'm stating the obvious here, but you are the shizzle! Your in-depth knowledge, coupled with enthusiasm and honesty, just wipe the floor with the competition. Thanks for your hard work. So now, one question...Where the heck is this beautiful Land-O-Lakes you keep showing us in all your videos. Consider me officially jealous if you live there.
Thanks amitubal! The photos are taken from Queenstown in New Zealand's South Island! PS - and for all Olympus fans, they've just announced another price drop on the E410 and E510! But they *might* announce new models at the end of the month...
its been almost 2 months.. and i still have not been able to decide between the e-510, d80 or the 400d. i have watched all your videos and have read the full review on your website comparing one another etc. i have also read many reviews from other people and other sites.. all giving me mixed opinions.liveview isnt something i'm particularly interested in. and in terms of photos..just general use. which one would you ultimately recommend?or spend your money on Gordon? Thanks!
I can feel the pain. I was in the same situation in December. The problem was solved once I went to the store and tried out all the cameras. I went with the feeling and bought the e-510 (double kit). So far I'm very satisfied with it!
i can say one thing olympus e510 because the e510 does have builtin image stabilizer others doesent a 17-85mm IS lens toronors canon costs 1500swedish kronors (6kronors = 1$
hello gordon, great review as always.i want to buy the e-510,but i want to do macro work especially and i want to buy it along the sigma 105mm,but i heard that the sigma will not allow the manual focusing after the pressing of the AEL button to autofocus in liveview and then magnify the picture by 10 times.can u tell anything on that?thanks.
Hmmm, I'm not sure, but there could be some people on the Olympus forum at the Cameralabs website who could help... or there are of course macro lenses from Olympus, like the 50mm...
I just found out about this camera yesterday from a guy at yahoo answers, im definitely picking it over the Revel XTi and the Nikon D40x... neither of which have the stabilization/live view features. your video has definitely helped me enforce my decision, thanks :)
i have checked every review and my budget o course and im eyeing for this camera...it has everything i need...image stabilizer, anti-dust, live view, noise filter, 10x zoom, and lots more. this camera will be my first body (buddy).
Glad it helped! There are a few E-510 owners on the Cameralabs forums if you'd like to discuss it - and we'd love to hear what you think of it when you've been using it for a while!
I can't choose, I am thinking of buying a DSLR camera, but I am stuck, I have narrowed my choise down to 4 camera's(might still be a lot) the Canon eos 400D, Olympus E-510, Nikon D40x, Sony alpha A100.
Is there someone who could give a tip or a bit of advise about the camera's above
Hi there, we have compared the pros and cons of all four cameras in the Verdict page of our E-510 review at the Cameralabs website. There's also discussions about them in our fourm.
alexanderkamermans i had done the same narrowing, and after like 4-5 hours of straight research i found out that the best camera for me was the E-510. Olympus has been working quietly and hard to beat the Nikon/Canon giants, and they are doing a great job.
Olympus works with the zuiko lense: "It's the Zuiko lense on an Olympus half-frame camera which worked on top of Mt. Everest to capture Sir Hillary's conquest when the Nikon and Leica cameras failed because of freezing conditions." :)
Thanx again and gain Gordon, you are giving us a hard time considering all these choices. First, it was Nikon and Canon only, now I have added the Olympus and Pentax.
thank you so much for this review. It is so helpful and informative (and I like listening to your accent). I hadn't been looking at the e-510 (I actually didn't even know it existed), but after I watched your review, I started researching this camera. I've now ordered the e-510 mainly because your review has given me more confidence in this camera than anything I've read about any other camera. Great work!
Thanks gracie1ella! Glad to be of service! Don't forget you can get much more info and results on all of the cameras we review at the Cameralabs website!
you made a good point saying that people will think that you took a picture when you press auto-focus button on live view mode. from my expirience people that i take pictures of will vanish just a couple seconds after they hear some 'click'.
Hello everyone, just a quick note to say if you listen carefully when I press the IS button during the video, you can actually hear the anti-shake system whirring quietly in the background!
Hi Hewson60, AUTO mode works fine, but I personally prefer to use cameras in Program mode as they normally hide some settings when set to full AUTO. Program is still automatic, but normally lets you adjust anything...
Thanks, awsome reviews, I watched most of them and I went to your website via that link you added. Is this camera available yet? I have found a person on ebay selling it but none of the online stores seem to have it yet?
Hi Colsey85, glad you like the reviews! I just checked some of the stores listed in our E-510 review at the Cameralabs site and they claim to have it in stock... It is v popular though so expect to see it going in and out of stock...
hahaha i like you man

cameralabs 3 years ago
depends on what you want.. biggest (-) of olympus are:
2x crop (with significantly smaller viewfinder)
expensive lenses! (especially wide)
reduced dynamic range and more noise if compared to 1.5x crop sensor
K10D is different league, its RAW image is on Canon EOS 40D level. K10D is no entry level!
Entry level is K100D super.
K10D is certainly above eos 30D and about equal with EOS 40D. Better than nikon D80 in many aspects too.

Or, wait a bit and buy K20D later when price drops.. it has live-view and new cmos sensor. Eos40D is looser compared to it.

hello gordon, great review as always.i want to buy the e-510,but i want to do macro work especially and i want to buy it along the sigma 105mm,but i heard that the sigma will not allow the manual focusing after the pressing of the AEL button to autofocus in liveview and then magnify the picture by 10 times.can u tell anything on that?thanks.
davio321 4 years ago
Hmmm, I'm not sure, but there could be some people on the Olympus forum at the Cameralabs website who could help... or there are of course macro lenses from Olympus, like the 50mm...

I just found out about this camera yesterday from a guy at yahoo answers, im definitely picking it over the Revel XTi and the Nikon D40x... neither of which have the stabilization/live view features. your video has definitely helped me enforce my decision, thanks :)

I can't choose, I am thinking of buying a DSLR camera, but I am stuck, I have narrowed my choise down to 4 camera's(might still be a lot) the Canon eos 400D, Olympus E-510, Nikon D40x, Sony alpha A100.
Is there someone who could give a tip or a bit of advise about the camera's above
alexanderkamermans 4 years ago
Hi there, we have compared the pros and cons of all four cameras in the Verdict page of our E-510 review at the Cameralabs website. There's also discussions about them in our fourm.
cameralabs 4 years ago
alexanderkamermans i had done the same narrowing, and after like 4-5 hours of straight research i found out that the best camera for me was the E-510. Olympus has been working quietly and hard to beat the Nikon/Canon giants, and they are doing a great job.

A second reason to buy this camera:
Olympus works with the zuiko lense: "It's the Zuiko lense on an Olympus half-frame camera which worked on top of Mt. Everest to capture Sir Hillary's conquest when the Nikon and Leica cameras failed because of freezing conditions." :)

Thanx again and gain Gordon, you are giving us a hard time considering all these choices. First, it was Nikon and Canon only, now I have added the Olympus and Pentax.

this review gave me so much info about this slr :) I'm impressed by the image stabilisation. Thanks Gordon :)

Excellent review! I was so wanting an E-500, but now after watching your review, I now want to buy the E-510! :) Thanks for your work!
eucharistdude12 4 years ago
thank you so much for this review. Great work!

Awesome video review. I like it very much and it help me in my choice. Thank you.
hynchenzo 4 years ago
that looks like an excelent camera.
you made a good point saying that people will think that you took a picture when you press auto-focus button on live view mode. from my expirience people that i take pictures of will vanish just a couple seconds after they hear some 'click'.

Hello everyone, just a quick note to say if you listen carefully when I press the IS button during the video, you can actually hear the anti-shake system whirring quietly in the background!

Hi!
Do you get better pictures of such landscapes as shown with the program "P" than with "A"(utomatic)?
Hewson60 4 years ago
Hi Hewson60, AUTO mode works fine, but I personally prefer to use cameras in Program mode as they normally hide some settings when set to full AUTO. Program is still automatic, but normally lets you adjust anything...

Thanks for the review. It would be fun if the cameralabs link was in the description box.

Hi Phylmyc, thanks for the tip! I've updated the description to include a live link to the full review at the Cameralabs website - thanks!

Thanks, awsome reviews, I watched most of them and I went to your website via that link you added. Is this camera available yet? I have found a person on ebay selling it but none of the online stores seem to have it yet?
Colsey85 4 years ago
Hi Colsey85, glad you like the reviews! I just checked some of the stores listed in our E-510 review at the Cameralabs site and they claim to have it in stock... It is v popular though so expect to see it going in and out of stock...
