I'm glad Sammy Hagar is there. not many people seem to remember this but he was the first person to cover a Patti Smith song. long before the 'Hip' crowd did. he covered her song 'Free Money' on his first album in 1977. if you haven't heard it just look it up here on youtube. 'Sammy Hagar Free Money'. it's pretty great. there's also a great clip of him Jamming with Elvis Costello and Jerry Garcia. so he must be a lot more open minded about other peoples music then people here are of his.
25 years after Roth was replaced by Sammy and you Hagar haters are still bashing him. Get over it. You people need therapy. He's moved on from it why can't you. And how's that new VH album with Roth coming?? Wasn't it supposed to be out in April???? I am sure it's be here any day now. Riiiiiiight.
I really enjoy all the artists on stage here. They all come from different musical backgrounds and styles. I think the whole purpose of this song is to bring all people together. I'm sorry to read here the negative comments on Sammy Hagar. One day I hope we all realize that its the artist that help bring people together with music. I see that we still have a ways to go.
Funny how Hagar gets treated like he's a nobody there. Not strange considering how the hall works and the average music journo works. This is a lame overrated song and artist and she has all these other 'classic' artists honouring her. If it meant anything KISS and Moody Blues and tons of others would have made it before Smith. And people suggesting Vedder's goat tremolo or even Ronnie's is better than Hagar's singing? Will you ever shut up and just go away?
@ColtraneTaylor Sammy Hagar is there by default. Van Halen were inducted that year and mainly because of their time with David Lee Roth as their frontman. Anyway, Eddie Van Halen at the time was hospitalized with clinical depression and Alex refused to go without his brother, so Sammy and Michael Anthony were sent.
@kmel5150 Hagar and Anthony were not "sent" by anyone. They went on their own volition. And you're a fool if you don't think the Hagar years had anything to do with why they were indcuted. If they had broke up when he left they would probably still be waiting to be inducted. You Roth-Worshipping Hagar haters are such tools. Can't you put your hatred aside even for this??
@MackLeeGreen Must be nice to be able to speak for everybody. And considering you responded to a comment I made 8 MONTHS AGO, you are in need of psychiatric help. I never for one second thought that David Lee Roth and Van Halen would ever reunite. And it doesn't surprise me that he didn't show up either. All I said was that Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony were there by default. Had Eddie shown up, it would have been him and Alex minus everyone else. They went because Eddie didn't.
@kmel5150 Really?? And on what basis do you know that if Ed and Alex went then Sammy and Michael wouldn't have shown?? When has either Sammy or Michael indicated that they would not show up under any circumstances?? They haven't. Hagar said he was hoping it would be a chance for all of them to perform together (including Roth). Interesting you accuse me of trying to speak for anyone when you're the one saying that you know why Sam and Al went and that they wouldn't have gone if Ed and Al had.
@MackLeeGreen Considering the deep HATRED Sammy has for Eddie, it's pretty obvious. So they all decided to take the high road, cool. It's pretty easy to say " I'd love it if we could all play together " when there was a better chance at winning Powerball without buying a ticket of it happening. And by the way, who the hell is Al who went with Sam? The only Al I know of is Alex Van Halen, who was not there. This discussion is over. Feel free to respond but I am done. So long.
@kmel5150 By Al I meant Michael Anthony it was a typo. Sammy has no hatred for Eddie or Alex and he has insisted as much. Yes some of the stuff he wrote concerning his relationship with Ed in his book is far from flattering but he also insists that he was just as difficult to work with. Nobody was going to keep Sam away from that ceremony, no matter who went. And BTW pulling the "this discussion is over" card saying you won't reply is simply a ploy of those who know they can't win an argument.
This performance was great until Hagar started singing. I still love it, though. Poor Ronnie Spector had no idea what the hell she was singing, bless her heart.
@lorigrim Oh please!!! Someone always has to bash Hagar. He sounded better than most of the singers up there; certainly every bit as good as Stipe and Vedder and better than Smith and way better then Spector. Not to mention, at least he and Michael Anthony showed up unlike Van Halen brothers and the classless David Lee Roth.
This is the best hall of fame jam ever!!! Not only is it a great song, but Patti Smith,Eddie Vedder and Micheal Stipe....Come on it doesn't get any better than this!
Just 589 days till punk ass returns to the fascist fatherland of his Father's PO box "residence" in TX. People will rule again ONLY IF you want it internet dreamers, it takes effort. Let's roll...no more Bushes, OK kiddies

@quistosound That's funny she doesn't actually give him a 'look'. Must have been your own prejudice showing through.

@quistosound Atleast Sammy wrote his biggest hits unlike Patti. And he's multi-talented not a critics choice artist like her or REM.

In Miss Spector's defense, I have a bootleg on which Patti cannot remember the words at times either. :)

Eddie Veder looks alot like Johnny Depp in this. Ironic, because Johnny Depp is a fanof both Patti Smith and Idolizes Keith Richards.

I stand corrected; Hagar sneaked in on the coattails of Van Halen, taking credit for the accomplishments of the REAL Val Halen. Van Hagar blows!
