Robert DeNiro got Micheal Man to get Andy McNabb (SAS + Bravo 2 Zero author) to consult on the Shootout of this very scene. It show how good an SAS mind is! Ben Aleck's "The Town" tried but falls short of this masterpiece. This scene is 10min long but must have cost a fortune to make and enormous amount of creativity to pull off. If you want to see the greatest car chase scene of all time then look at William Friedkin's French Connection, after 30 yrs it's yet to be topped!
The thing about this movie is that it depicts something that is extremely rare if not nonexistent, a bit like proverbial whore with the heart of gold. It depicts intelligent, well planned crime. Very very rare.
@lebarosky but on that rare occasion it does happen, and when it does... you get the Son of Sam, Columbine, the Virginia Tech Massacre, the Montreal Museum Robbery, the Lufthansa Heist and of course the North Hollywood Shootout.
@lebarosky Well, Beef let's see. Only one that remains unsolved and perps at large is the Montreal Museum Robbery. Son of Sam and Columbine are sociopaths, so they don't count. Ditto Va Tech. Lufthansa heist well just watch Goodfellas pretty accurate depiction of their fates. But yeah Montreal Museum heist! Problem: very very hard to fence the loot and the fence's cut is huge. BTW North Hollywood also complete whack jobs.
He dind't smile because he saw the cops. He smiled because of the successful robbery. He couldn't see the cops at all, cause the ambulance blocked his view.
they should have had 3 get away cars, so they can leave as each one makes it out of the bank, and less risk. if 3 split up and go in different directions, its hard to get them.

Dark Knight robbery vs. Heat robbery? Well, the Dark Knight one was planned out very well since the Joker fled seconds before the cops showed up and none were killed (though the Joker killed some later on in the film). The one for Heat, well, the epic shootout in Downtown L.A. was very intense. My final opinion: Dark Knight, said to be a gr8 film, more strategy. Heat: more combat.
Wtf? The movies aren't even the same, one is about the life of these criminals and the policemen that were after them, the other movie is about fucking batman, you can't compare them.

they were until tom sizemore comes out with "look at me again, ill kill ya" thats a fuckin line and a half tho, lol ill have to try that on my manager at work :D
yeah, this scene is awesome... but somehow I think the opening heist from the Dark Knight actually beats it (the robbery part, anyway). Can't beat that shootout, though.
These two movies were made using the same producer. Also I forget the actors name, but the guy in Dark Knight with the shotgun at the beginning is also in this movie and he helped make the scene in DK more realistic
a really great Shoot Out!!!
