Here is a utube video to answer you question (no apologies call no man father, watch and repost you comments here, ask and you shall receive, I always incorporate prayer and fasting when I'm seeking truth, God Bless may the holy sprit guid you unto all truths
Why are you stuck on why we call our pastor father? Do some research you want other people answer your questions by scripture, keep in mind us as Christians believe in the holy trinity but the word is not in scripture.
@Mcstroke57 You are not accurate and are not correct in what you say Catholics believe and that is your fault because you do not wish to know the truth and would rather bask in ignorance and hatred, both unchristian attitudes.
@Mcstroke57 Well I would have to know what your particular belief is but lets take your accusation that Catholics disobey the Bible by calling a priest "Father."
Was meant to be taken literally? Logic would indicate the answer is no. Are children forbidden from calling their parent 'father'?
@Mcstroke57 The term father is used freely in the Bible. For example, Joseph tells his brothers 'So it was not you who sent me here, but God; and he has made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house and ruler over all the land of Egypt" (Gen. 45:8).
Acts 7:2, where Stephen refers to "our father Abraham," or in Romans 9:10, where Paul speaks of "our father Isaac."
@Mcstroke57 There are numerous examples in the New Testament of the term "father" being used as a form of address and reference, even for men who are not biologically related to the speaker. There are, in fact, so many uses of "father" in the New Testament, that your Fundamentalist interpretation of Matthew 23 (and the objection to Catholics calling priests "father") must be wrong.
@Mcstroke57 A careful examination of the context of Matthew 23 shows that Jesus didn’t intend for his words here to be understood literally. The whole passage reads, "But you are not to be called ‘rabbi,’ for you have one teacher, and you are all brethren. And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven. Neither be called ‘masters,’ for you have one master, the Christ" (Matt. 23:8–10).
@Mcstroke57 So is Jesus also prohibiting the word 'teacher' too.
Apparently not as he says in Matthew 28:19–20, Christ himself appointed certain men to be teachers in his Church: "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations . . . teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you
@Mcstroke57 ." Paul speaks of his commission as a teacher: "For this I was appointed a preacher and apostle . . . a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth" (1 Tim. 2:7); "For this gospel I was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher" (2 Tim. 1:11). He also reminds us that the Church has an office of teacher:
@Mcstroke57 "God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers" (1 Cor. 12:28); and "his gifts were that some should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers" (Eph. 4:11). There is no doubt that Paul was not violating Christ’s teaching in Matthew 23 by referring so often to others as "teachers."
@Mcstroke57 Fundamentalists themselves slip up on this point by calling all sorts of people "doctor," for example, medical doctors, as well as professors and scientists who have Ph.D. degrees (i.e., doctorates). What they fail to realize is that "doctor" is simply the Latin word for "teacher."
@Mcstroke57 Even "Mister" and "Mistress" ("Mrs.") are forms of the word "master," also mentioned by Jesus. So if his words in Matthew 23 were meant to be taken literally, Fundamentalists would be just as guilty for using the word "teacher" and "doctor" and "mister" as Catholics for saying "father." But clearly, that would be a misunderstanding of Christ’s words.
@Mcstroke57 Throughout the world, some people have been tempted to look upon religious leaders who are mere mortals as if they were an individual’s supreme source of spiritual instruction, nourishment, and protection. The tendency to turn mere men into "gurus" is worldwide.
This was also a temptation in the Jewish world of Jesus’ day, when famous rabbinical leaders, especially those who founded important schools, such as Hillel and Shammai, were highly exalted by their disciples.
@Mcstroke57 It is this elevation of an individual man—the formation of a "cult of personality" around him—of which Jesus is speaking when he warns against attributing to someone an undue role as master, father, or teacher.
He is not forbidding the perfunctory use of honorifics nor forbidding us to recognize that the person does have a role as a spiritual father and teacher. The example of his own apostles shows us that.
@Mcstroke57 I have to say I was no expecting such an amazing reply to the Biblical support for catholic doctrine, you have truly pulled the carpet from under my feet, not.
Ita as I thought. To be a fundementalist you have to keep things really simple anf of course, when you hear the truth, shut your ears.
@Mcstroke57 ayou are avoiding my question re the Scriptures. You are a fairly typical one dimensional fundementalist, and dangerous for that because you dont use you God given intelligence. You have misunderstood what Jesus was saying in those Scriptures. Wgat about his opinion of the word 'teacher (Rabbi) and 'master. A deafening silence from you because you know you are wrong.'
@Mcstroke57 Now maybe I was expecting to much from you but since you challenged me to produce Scriptural evidence, well the very least I should expect in reply is your reason why I am wrong. I know there are some people who cannot be reached by the truth and in any case do not wish to hear it.
Hear what God of Israel YAHUSHUA-YAHUWAH (Son and Father are ONE) saying to our generation by His chosen prophets: Trumpetcallofgodonline. com ; Letter called "Purify Your Faith, and Come to the Father as It is Written": EXCERPT: "Only in the Bible and through these very Letters, of which I have given to My prophet of the end of this age, shall you find Him and know Him."
You are not here to change the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church is here to change YOU...I really don't get the point of attacking the Catholic Church. Attack it all you want, grumble all you want, it's not going anywhere. Why? Because Christ said so. The love of Christ will prevail against the hate against the Catholic Church. I'm not worried about anything that any atheist or found man-made Christian religion made after the 14th century has to say. Scott Hahn is great.
I came here for information. Someone attacking Christianity and supporting atheism, claimed that the Catholic church supported Nazis and Mussolini during the 2nd World War. Could someone tell me the truth?
@wwhit2001 What does a peaceful faith do in the face of extreme nationalism. Particularly in Germany where the Nazi were voted into power. They ,of course , did not support them but had to somehow exist and survive in that dark episode of history.
The Roman Catholic Church teaches unbiblical doctorines like the Trinity and celebrates Pagan holidays Like Christmas and Easter Also pray to Saints and Mary which is completely unbiblical.
Reading through this comments makes me incredibly sad. We're all brothers and sisters in Christ and we're arguing senselessly when we were told not to do so. All I have to say is I love you all! 2 Timothy 2:14-24. When anger consumes you in your comments and you're only replying to make sure everyone knows you're right, it's time to take your hands off the keyboard. Spread the love. A.K.A. - Spread God's love and leave the judgements up to him.
@mmmxtoastyxx, We're also told to 'test the spirits to see whether they be of God' and unfortunately and rather sadly when it comes to the Catholic Church the answer is NO. DEEPLY SEARCH THE WORD FOR YOURSELF, read the testimonies of those who've followed this system for MANY YEARS, and how the HOLY SPIRIT opened their eyes and hearts to the truth of the true Gospel of the Kingdom of God and let the OUT, then come back and talk to us then??? God/Jesus ARE NOT THE AUTHORS OF CONFUSION.
The lamb of god is a killer::>>>Witches, kill them. Homosexuals, kill them.fortunetellers, kill them. those who don`t listen to priests, kill them. those hitting their dad, kill them. those who curse their parents, kill them, adulterers, kill them. fornicators, kill them. people who believe in other religions, kill them. non-believers,kill them. fals prohets ,kill them. blasphemers, kill them. those who work on the Sabbath, kill them. This is the word of Jesus(god)
@49203greg Please pray to the holy spirit to inspire you correctly. Your assumptions are laughable. I defy you to find something wrong with my comment. It`s not my fault, if you have no clue what`s in your bible. And by the way, if I were a catholic I would die of shame. The catholic church has been on the forefront of obstruction to science and progress., not to forget the recent worldwide sex scandals. Now start reading your bible.
@ndzoko I am calling you out because you are trying to confuse people just like satan does. You take a passage and try obscure its true meaning and say their is evil in our Holy Book. BEGONE WITH YOU!!!! I will not acknowledge you no longer.
@TheThedragonwarrior If I am citing lies, show me, If not, admit that you have no clue what..s in your bible. If the truth offends you, sorry, there is nothing I can do about that,
@ndzoko i did not say you are citing lies. read what i put again, btw i will not acknowledge you any longer so begone with you!!! If you respond back to me i will not respond because you are of the evil one and use his words. you try to confuse the children of God and bring them down with you. If you do not change your ways, Hell will be your new home.
@TheThedragonwarrior you are of the evil one and use his words. Sorry man, I just quoted yiour HOLY BOOK. Hell , my friend, is infantilism. Maybe you belong in hell, for claiming that the bible is from the evil one.
Hold on. 8:50 - He heard "Lamb of God" in the mass, and didn't know WHY? A lot of good his Biblical training had done to that point. No wonder he fell for the Catholic trap.
@cheagan: That is hardly a sensible understanding of what he said. If you can't understand what is being said, it is doubtful you can understand anything.
@VictorLepanto Right. Because John the Baptist's little-known epilogue was, "Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world - now, quick, everyone! Get some bread and eat it, or else you won't be saved!" Mr. Hahn is no different than the fools who go to church looking for gold dust or angel feathers to fall from the ceiling. He needed a sign, and he found it in the "eucharist". Wow! Transubstantiation! It's a miracle! God must be HERE.
@cheagan: If you want to accuse me of being a Pharisee, you might do well to contemplate the Pharisee in the mirror.
But what you has absolutely no relationship to the previous statement. What do miracles & their witnesses have to do w/ Jesus being called the Lamb of God? Scott Hahn's point about Jesus being called the Lamb of God has to do w/ the point in the Mass were "Agnus Dei" is recited. "Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us." Revelations is the Mass.
Rather than seeking a relationship with Christ, he has sought after a relationship with a church full of traditions, that ultimately don't impress God... Hopefully, he will one day find his spirituality, only through Christ...
The Brother replied, well if I planted it the way you said to then we would not have all this lettuce. St. Francis replied God requires obedience. The message here my dear brothers in Christ is not for us to question the Catholic church but to be obedient unto it. I hope this touched you as much as it has touched me. The peace of Christ be with ALL OF YOU!!!
@mandy718 Sure :) example. Here in America there are many different domination of Christianity. They all interpret the Holy Bible on what they think it means not the Church. In other words they do not trust anyone but themselves on how to interpret the Holy Bible. St. Francis was trying to teach obedience. Even if YOU think it is wrong, be like a Child of God and follow what was told to you by the Church founded on the Rock. The Church of God will not led you astray. It will lead you to be a St.
@TheThedragonwarrior Any Christian may know the fullness of Christ. But you don't have to be a Cathy to do so. To believe that you do is a baseless presumption and the height of ignorant arrogance.
@JeffersonDinedAlone If only you knew what the Catholic Church has to offer. It gives the fullness of Christ and the fullness of truth. I can't teach you over youtube about our faith I wish you would do your research as I have. However, do like I did and look at both sides; ex. if a Protestant says the Eucharist is not the blood of Christ see why the Catholics believe it is by a Catholic mind you, it would not help you if you only listen to Protestant or to only Catholic. Once you do you will see
@TheThedragonwarrior .It gives the fullness of Christ and the fullness of truth. >> Sorry man, that is what all denominations teach. Catholicism is one of the most outlandish belief systems on this earth. Whatever you believe makes sense to you( even communism etc.) otherwise you wouldn`t believe it, would you ? Catholicism is on it`s way out.Internal division. recrutement of priest a disastre. In the last 30 years 50% of the churchgoers lost. 180 dispensation for priests in a couple years.
@ndzoko you probably will not believe this because you do not see the truth, you have been blinded. If this happens, what you have said, it will be the end of the world as you know it. God will not allow his church to fall. Also, if it makes me stupid believing in something you call outlandish, then allow me to say I am the stupidest person on this planet :) I hope you will see the light as I have. The joy is immense, the loss the saddest and darkest feeling.
@TheThedragonwarrior God will not allow his church to fall. It``s falling apart before your eyes.`I admire your juvenile innocent enthusiasm. Enjoy it. I won.t last. Mother Theresa``s last prayer.... god, IF YOU EXIST, have mercy on me'''... Sooner or later, reality will knock at the door. It will not pretty to have to admit to yourself, that you have been chasing mirages. I know what I am talking about. Good luck. Enjoy the fantasy.
@TheThedragonwarrior Obedience is one thing. However, if you don't question anything which you wish to, then, 1) You don't learn, or, 2) You don't discern what sounds foolish and delusional. God gave each of us a mind (functioning on an individual basis to varying degrees), a gift which He intended for us to use, not disconnect in some kind of incomprehensible manner as a requirement to accept anything. Obedience without thoughtful discernment is not obedience; it is mindless irrelevance.
@JeffersonDinedAlone In the story what I mean is to be obedient like a child, who obeys innocently. Because Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven." I was trying to say, we must obey our superiors of the Catholic Church because Jesus passed it on to Peter and then from Peter to his successor and so on. In the story what I mean is to be obedient like a child, who obeys innocently. We must be little children.
my fellow Christians let me tell you a story that I heard that really spoke to me. St. Francis wanted some lettuce planted so he told one of his brothers to plant the lettuce seeds, but upside-down. The brother went to plant the seeds but said to himself, Brother Francis doesn't know what he is talking about so he planted them right-side up. When the lettuce grew up he took it to Brother Francis and then Brother Francis asked how did you get this wonderful lettuce?....(this is continued...)
In these clips Hahn speaks about the real presence in the Lord's supper and of baptism as uniting us with Christ, not only a symbol. Makes me wonder why he did not look into Lutheranism.
He does talk about pergatory too, but then he does not quote the text (1 Cor 3), but only refers to it. It does not speak about being pured in fire or suffering, only about being saved but having ones work being burnt (and in context it's about those who are building the congregation by teaching it).
in scanning these comments with all the anti Catholic bias and a total misunderstanding of what Christ was trying to show about the Samaritans (considered half-pagans) in his parables, it is clear that the Church is the refuge of sinners! sex scandals are not the sole domain of Catholics but rampant in many Protestant churches. God looks to the heart. "And they'll know we are Christians by our LOVE."
By this example also, others there bury those who die by lightning as beloved of God, and honour them with temples, and erect statues of the dead in their own forms. Thence, in like manner, the rulers in different places were emulous of like honour, and very many of them honoured the tombs of those who were beloved of them, though not dying by lightning, with temples and statues, and lighted up altars, and ordered them to be adored as gods.
Doctrines of Pope on Queen of Heaven according to Simon Magus. The grand daddy of Catholics
And he says that he has brought down this Helena from the highest heavens to the world; being QUEEN, as the all-bearing being, and wisdom, for whose sake, says he, the Greeks and barbarians fought, having before their eyes but an image of truth; for she, who really is the truth, was then with the chiefest god.
Clement Homily 2 Chapter XXV
Hail Helena,Hail Helena,We Worship You,Oh Queen of Heaven
@mpenaco Brother in Christ, you're attacking my beliefs with a scatter gun, touching upon many many doctrines in just a few posts. I invite you to join the Catholic Answers Forum, forums.catholic.com There we can further discuss each of these points separately and in a more appropriate setting.
Go on this site and hear: "Why Evangelicals are Returning to Rome with guest Bob DeWaay" AND "Catholic Converts" -look at their comments; why they know that Jesus founded only one church and they converted. Only 60 years after the Protestant Reformation, a book was published giving the 200 "interpretations" for the John 6 / The Eucharist. For 1,500 years every Christian knew the Eucharist was indeed Jesus' Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity. First the Orthodox, then Protestants will come Home.
@turnersinva If the RCC is the true Church of God, it will not promote false doctrines and it will follow God's prescription on how abusive priests should be handled and disciplined (1 Cor. 5). Jesus told his disciples that "whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me." The decades of child abuse in the hands of your priests is a glaring testimony that your church is not following Christ's commandment. God will be ashamed to call you his church.
@mpenaco To say God would be ashamed to call us his church because of scandals in the church, then that means God is ashamed to call us his children. Are you perfect? Have you ever told a lie before? Have you ever stolen something? Have you ever looked at a woman with lust and hated someone? If so, God should be ashamed to call you his child then, but no, God is a all living and merciful God. "He who is without sin cast the first stone."
@dis00612 None of us is perfect. We are all guilty of sin. But what is your church doing? Instead of acknowledging this sinfulness of man, it is promoting the sinlessness of Mary, a human being like you and me. I have pointed out to you not once but many times that your church is not following God's prescription for disciplining abusive priests(1 Cor. 5). If your church is serious in her desire to follow Christ, why the continued disregard for God's word in this important area?
The Body of Christ is unfortunately divided. All Churches are founded by men - except for the Catholic Church which was founded by Christ 2,000 years ago. Please show me in the Bible where it says that Jesus wants/allows division. "And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build MY CHURCH, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it." ~ Matthew 16:17-19 Note it does not say churchES.
@turnersinva The Church of God transcends religious membership. God's holy people are scatterred all of the world. Some of them are in your church - those who keep God's commandments, and many others are outside your church. Listen to what the Bible says about where God's people are:"...and with your blood you purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and nation. You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth." (Rev 5-9-10)
@turnersinva You quoted Matthew 16:17-19 to support your belief that the CC was the church that Christ built. But judging from the evil doctrines that your church promotes and its total disregard for Paul's instruction on how sexual immorality cases should be handled, it is highly doubtful that the gates of hell has not already prevailed against your church. The Church that Christ bult protects the least of our brothers and punishes the evil doers. Your church failed to do this.
@mpenaco Christ did not want to punish anyone if you believe this then you are blind, Pray for Mercy not for Justice, the DEVIL, LUCIFER, SATAN whatever you wish to call him got the Justice of God. THE JUSTICE not MERCY.
@cublop-i have doubts that they are in heaven, since they practiced idolatry by intercession/veneration of saints and by bowing in prayer before images/statues of saints, done in the very name of God who condemned idolatry. So it's actually worse than pagan idolatry, which is not in the name of God of bible. So those who practice catholicism blaspheme the living almighty God,along with the heretic islamic sect, which blasphemes God by claiming he doesn't have a son and that Jesus is only a prophet.
@redemerslove-nearly 1650 years ago, roman goverment allowed people to keep their old idols but with names changed to "christians" ones, inorder to consolidate power(by doing this goverment was able to tax people in ways not imagined before, and ushered in the "dark ages").This practice came to be called as "intercession/veneration of saints" and is the backbone of catholic and orthodox heretic sects.Christian groups like donatists, arians, manichaens didn't fell for this intercession of saints
@redemerslove-nearly 1650 years ago, roman goverment allowed people to keep their old idols but with names changed to "christians" ones, inorder to consolidate power(by doing this goverment was able to tax people in ways not imagined before, and ushered in the dark ages). This practice came to be called as "intercession/veneration of saints" and is the backbone of catholic and orthodox heretic sects.Christian groups like donatists, arians, manichaens didn't fell for this intercession of saints
@redeemerslove-christianity has only one interpretation for the scriptures for last 2000 years.Even though figuratively there may be multiple meanings for a given bible passage, those meanings will never contradict each other. Your private interpretation of scriptures, started some 1650 years back, when Roman empire fused idolatry into God's Church corrupting it.Since government wanted to consolidate power,it allowed people to keep their old idols but with new christian names.
@redeemerslove-you are accusing others, when you yourself are at error. In my whole life i have never heard a single evangelical pastor claim that "petra" is applied to Peter. The only interpretation that i have heard from evangelical circles is that "petra" is applied to Peter's revelation, and thus indirectly to Jesus Christ himself. So the two documents you showed are either fake,or by some misled people.I have seen more variable interpretations of scripture in catholicism than in christianity.
Look it up in other translations that do not contain the word “alone”, and you’ll see that the message is still the same: men are justified by faith, not by the law. Where in the Bible there is a distinction between “law of Moses” and “works of mercy”? Where in the Bible there is a distinction between “law of Moses” and “works of mercy”? Throughout the New Covenant Jesus explains that the laws of Moses are works of mercy.
Also--with the protestant interpretation---we have 35,000 denominations with 35,000 differrent "leaders" or Popes....whcih NEVER happened in the OT or NT....now all of the sudden that is ok??? Why would that change all of a sudden...There was ALWAYS someone that lead the flock...Abe, Noah, Moses, David etc....now tell me that having 35,000 arguing "leaders" makes sense when it never happened in the OT and NT??? Also, the 900,000 protestants are all Popes untu themselves.
With the Catholic interpretation-we have one Church--one leader. One Truth. With you protestants interpretation--we have and estimated 35,000 denominations--all teaching something just a bit different...or many things ALOT different from just The Church, but from other protestants.
THIS FACT! The Catholic Church has always tried to keep the European as dumb possible. An example of this hiding of truth can be seen in the coverup of the Pedophile Priest and Gays that run the Catholic Church. The Spanish Inquisition, The Crusades, WWI, and WWII, all involve the Catholic Church manipulating, lying to, stealing from, and murdering the people of Europe. WWII is nothing but the Catholic Church and Rothschild using Ashkenazi Khazars(non-Semites/Zionist) for another Crusade.
But rather than speculate, why not let the passage speak for itself? When the Holy Spirit inspired the Greek text of the New Testament, He made a distinction between Peter (Petros) and the rock (petra). The reason for the difference is clear from the context.
There are even nine places where the Scriptures refer to Peter as Cephas, the Aramaic form of his name. Or why did not the Holy Spirit just repeat the word petros, as Catholic defenders speculate He did in the Aramaic? Then Matthew 16:18 would read, "You are Peter (Petros), and upon this rock (petros) I will build My church."
The inspired New Testament Scriptures were written in Greek, not Aramaic. What Jesus might have said in Aramaic is conjecture. Furthermore, if, as some contend, the Aramaic is clear but the Greek inadequate or confusing, why did not the Holy Spirit simply import the Aramaic words? There are many such examples in the New Testament.
What is clear is that Rome’s interpretation of Matthew 16:18 cannot bear the scrutiny of close examination. Consequently, Roman Catholic defenders must move the discussion off the inspired page and onto the field of speculation.
He did not change His words but repeated Peter’s Aramaic name Kepha. What Christ said, they claim, was: "You are Kepha, and upon this kepha I will build my Church." And so, they say, it is clear that Peter was to be the foundation upon which the Church would be built.
Roman Catholic proponents, aware that Matthew’s use of the word petra in the phrase "upon this rock" does not help their cause, counter by arguing that Jesus taught in Aramaic, not Greek. They claim that when Jesus spoke the words recorded in Matthew 16:18,
Paul also refers to Christ by the Greek word petra. In Romans he wrote of Christ as "a rock (petra) of offense" (Romans 9:33) over which the Jews had stumbled. In First Corinthians he wrote of a spiritual rock encountered by Israel in the wilderness. He identified that rock, saying, "...and the rock (petra) was Christ" (1 Corinthians 10:4).
For this is contained in Scripture: "Behold I lay in Zion a choice stone, a precious corner stone, and he who believes in Him shall not be disappointed." This precious value, then, is for you who believe. But for those who disbelieve, "The stone which the builders rejected, this became the very corner stone," and, "A stone of stumbling and a rock (petra) of offense." —1 Peter 2:6-8
The context argues for interpreting "this rock" as referring back to the revelation and its content. In other words, the Lord Jesus as "the Christ, the Son of the living God" (Matthew 16:16) would be the solid rock upon which the Christian faith would rest. Every doctrine and practice would be founded upon Him. Every true believer would hold to a common conviction: Jesus is "the Christ, the Son of the living God" (Matthew 16:16).
When Peter correctly answered Jesus’ question as to His identity, the Lord remarked, "Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven" (Matthew 16:17). Peter’s insight into Jesus’ true identity was a revelation from God. In this context, Jesus, making a play on words, says, "You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church" (Matthew 16:18).
The context of Matthew 16:13-20 is not about Peter; it is about Jesus. It starts with a question that Jesus raises about His identity: "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?" (Matthew 16:13). It reaches a climax with Peter’s declaration: "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God" (Matthew 16:16). It concludes with the Lord warning His disciples "that they should tell no one that He was the Christ" (Matthew 16:20).
“By the words ‘this rock’ Jesus means not himself, nor his teaching, nor God the Father, nor Peter's confession, but Peter himself” (J. Knox Chamblin [Presbyterian], Matthew: Evangelical Commentary on the Bible (Grand Rapids, MI: Baker, 1989), page 742).
“The expression ‘this rock’ almost certainly refers to Peter, following immediately after his name, just as the words following ‘the Christ’ in v. 16 applied to Jesus” (Craig L. Blomberg [Baptist Theologian]).
To determine the best interpretation, the reader would have had to look more closely at the context. This is the second and greatest weakness with the Roman Catholic interpretation: It fails to give proper emphasis to the context.
Anyone reading the Gospel of Matthew in the original Greek language would have noticed the difference. The reader would have had to pause and decide what was meant by "upon this rock" (Matthew 16:18). The reader would not immediately have equated the rock (petra) with Peter (Petros), because the words are different.
Peter’s name, Petros, on the other hand, is masculine in gender and refers to a boulder or a detached stone. Greek literature also uses it of a small stone that might be picked up and thrown.
What Jesus said to Peter could be translated, "You are Stone, and upon this bedrock I will build My church." His choice of words would indicate that the rock on which the church would be built was something other than Peter.
The word Jesus chose to use for rock, petra, is a feminine noun that refers to a mass of rock. The New Testament uses this word in Matthew 7:24,25 to refer to the bedrock upon which a wise man built his house. Petra is also found later in Matthew’s Gospel with reference to Jesus’ tomb, which workers had carved out of solid rock (Matthew 27:60).
Jesus continued by saying and i shall built the church on petra-a large stable rock-which is the revelation given to Simon peter that Jesus is the eternal, only begotten son of God.In other words Jesus himself is the large firm rock foundation on which church is built.Catholics are you so unintelligent,to think God,after dying for his creation, will confer that glory on his creation-simon peter, who denied the Jesus Messiah 3 times after he was taken for crucifixion.
Attic greek was the original greek spoken in the greek capital and most of the greece. As greek culture spread by conquests and trade, many greek dialects developed, and there was an effort to fuse these dialects to original greek, particularly in ancient near east, which came to be known as koine greek.Natural gender of nouns was irrelevant in both koine and attic. So if peter was called petros,it was because he Jesus considered him only a small, unstable stone.
In the Gospel of Matthew, when Jesus said to Simon, "You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church" (Matthew 16:18), His choice of words was significant. Though Peter’s name means rock (petros), Jesus did not say, "You are Peter (Petros), and upon this rock (petros-which accurately means a small unstable stone) I will build my church." What He said was, "You are Peter (Petros), and upon this rock (petra-which means a large firm mass of rock) I will build My church."
The Roman Catholic Church interprets Jesus here to say, "You are Peter, and upon you, Peter, I will build My church." Peter would be the rock upon which the Church would be built . He would be the "prince of all the apostles and visible head of the whole church."
There are several problems with this interpretation. The first is that someone reading Matthew’s Gospel in Greek, the original language of the New Testament, would not have immediately concluded that Peter was the rock.
such brandings were less effective against prots, inorder to fulfill the prophecy of Jesus-"You are peter(petros-masculine noun in greek, meaning a small stone) and i shall build my church(non feminist protestantism) on this rock(petra-feminine noun in greek, meaning a large mass of rock, not the degrading dead body of peter buried under vatican as catholics claim/believe)and gates of hell(catholicism and oter false religions/ideologies) will not prevail over it".
In rapture believers will be taken and hypocrites left behind to face great tribulation(such as never happened before or never will in the future) which will last for 7 years
I understand catholics will be angered by this, but their anger is in vain because this is the truth and truth will triumph. Also note that throughout the centuries catholics branded(and still branding) all these groups as dualistic pagans heretics who need to be wiped out from face of earth...
Animal and other sacrifices will be offered there in the rememberance of the ultimate sacrifice ofJesus Christ on the cross, just as it symbolized the coming sacrifice of christ in the old testament period. This will remain till coming of christ ( rapture) .
In future (after the soon coming WW3) they will unite as single god's church and all people living on earth will be it's members. The 3rd temple will be rebuilt in jerusalem and it shall be called "the house of prayer for people of all nations" exactly as Jesus predicted nearly 2000 years ago.
By 15th century printing was invented and bible became available to masses . They came to know about truth that catholic church was doing idolatry in the name of god . They revolted and it came to be known as protestant revolution and were led by many great leaders like jan hus,jan zizka, martin luther, ulrich zwigli, john calvin, john knox, john wesley and many others .Today protestants number more than 800 million .
But almost simultaneously, the spirit of God started 2 new christian movements in heart of catholicism itself~in italy and france . In italy they were called waldensians and in france they were called cathars .Cathars were wiped out in the 12th centutry by catholic crusaders~a mass murder popularly called as cathar/albinesian crusade (catholic church still take great pride in these crusades) .But italian waldensians continued inspite of severe catholic persecution and they remain to this day .
Finally they were wiped out by catholic crusaders,en route to capture Jerusalem by a secret directive from vatican in 12th century, perhaps the real intention of antichristians(catholics) for taking up crusades was to wipe out true christian like paulcians and bogomils who exposed their idolatry and lies.
Later they spread to turkey and balkans where they were called paulicians and bogomils respectively. They were behind the iconoclastic movement of 7-8th century. Both these groups came under heavy persecution from catholics because they dared to expose the truth of christ to them
Thus when constantine gave christianity special status in his empire, idolatry also entered along with it in the unsuspecting name of "intercession to saints".This soon spread to most of the church, because such was the influence of roman empire at that time. But few like followers of mani ~ (mani was a 2nd century apostle of jesus whose followers spread from persia to balkans in the west and to china in the east, massxcred by catholics) remained true to the gospel of christ.
True christians like gothic arian christians,donatists(n.africa,s.europe),manichaens(middle east,,central asia) opposed this practice, but catholics branded them heretics and massacred them.Iconoclastic movement of (7th-8th century) century was against this practice, later protestant revolution (15-16th century) was waged mainly against this practice.
When Constantine gave chritianity a special status in his empire, majority in his empire was still pagan and they found it hard to forgo of their old idolatrous practices. So they changed the names of their old idols to "christian" ones and started praying to them . This came to be known as "intercession to saints" and is still practiced by catholic and orthodox "christians".
But through the council of nicae roman catholics spread lies about arian christians, claiming that they believed Jesus was a created being and branded them heretics, when in reality they only taught that God the father was superior to son Jesus which is infact 100% biblical. This caused the decline of true christianity. In the same fashion catholics branded other groups as heretics like donatists, manichaens, paulicians, bogomils, cathars, waldensians and finally protestants.
Romans at that time gave special previlages to franks for accepting the corrupted catholic religion. But soon other germanic people goths, vandals conquered Italy spain etc and spread true christianity in those regions. It was the eastern goths(ostrogoths) who founded the nation of Italy as a true gothic arian christian nation.
Many christians at that time were against this. Some of them were arian christians who rejected this idolatrous practice of intercession to saints. Most of the germanic people except the franks initially accepted true arian christianity instead of catholicism which was corrupted by idolatry. It was 100s of years after that these groups became catholics.
Later in 4th century Constantine the then roman emperor gave Christianity a special status in his empire.Through the edict of milan, thessalonica and council of nicae what they did was not toleration for christianity, but to create a new fake religion in the name of Jesus,in which they integrated the ancient roman idolatry as the practice of intercession to saints.
Protestant revolution was not the origin of protestantism. The first protestant church was the apostolic church. (the church depicted in new testament do not pray to "saints" or use statues\images in prayer worship.) Thus it was protestant in essence.
@VictoryRepublican So glad I found this video, and seeing fellow Catholic's defending our True Church. So many people just don't understand our faith. I believe if people truly knew the Catholic faith, they would be Catholic. Peace and Blessings to you!
@VictoryRepublican The Catholic church is not God's true Church. If it is, it will protect helpless children from being abused by your church's own priests. If it is the true Church, it will not promote doctrines that are contrary to the teachings of Christ, the prophets and the apostles. While Scripture proclaims that all have sinned, your chruch promotes Mary as sinless. While God prohibits the making of graven images for worship, the your church promotes the opposite.
@HokieBlitz77 Your Marian doctrines, the Purgatory, Papal Infallibiity -- all of these are contrary to Scripture and must rejected as false teachings. When Paul says "all have sinned" he refers to all except Jesus because Jesus is God himself. Listen to how your Saint Augustine puts it: "He, Christ, alone being made a man but remaining God never had any sin nor did He take on flesh of sin, though He took flesh of the sin of His mother."
@mpenaco Do tell us where in Scripture they contradict! The simple fact that there is one exception to that "all" means there could be others; like infants, senile geriatrics, mentally handicapped persons. You might be interested in knowing that two of the fathers of the Reformation, Luther and Calvin, as well as other reformers, believed in the sinlessness of Mary.
@HokieBlitz77 Part 1: Some examples on where you contradict Scripture:
1) Scripture says "Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me"(Ps. 51:5) but your church proudly promotes Mary as sinless from conception.
2) Scripture says "As it is written: "There is no one righteous, not even one" (Rom. 3:10). But your church says Mary is free from any stain of original and actual sin, thereby making Paul's statement a lie.
@mpenaco If no one is righteous then who is referred to in James 5:16?
Let me ask you, if I were to ask you to pray for me because I am sick or that my mother is in the hospital, would you pray at my request?
Taking a look at Revelations... at the end of Rev 11 and the beginning of Rev 12, we see the ark of the covenant in heaven, a woman! Note that this is the ark of the NEW covenant, Mary!
@HokieBlitz77 "If no one is righteous then who is referred to in James 5:16?"
The people God calls righteous are not without sin. Were Abraham, Moses, David, Peter, Paul, John and the other apostles without sin? The fact is God used sinners even the worst ones to accomplish his plans for his people. It is only your church that requires a human to be free of original and actual sins before God can use her. But in the process, you contradict God's word.
@HokieBlitz77 "Let me ask you, if I were to ask you to pray for me because I am sick or that my mother is in the hospital, would you pray at my request?"
Of course I would because that's what God wants us to do -- to pray for one another. In fact Christ himself gave us an example in John 17 when he prayed for God's people. But we pray for those who are living, those who still have the opportunity to repent and change their lives. The dead cannot repent so our prayers for them are useless.
@HokieBlitz77 Revelation 11 is not talking about Mary. The Ark of the Covenant is the real ark which contains the holy commandments of God. There is nothing there that says the ark is Mary or that the ark is a woman. To say that the ark represents the woman Mary is to add a foolish human opinion to the perfect word of God.
@mpenaco if the Ark of the Covenant held the word of God, i.e., the Ten Commandments, then Jesus is the word made flesh. Word of God, Word made flesh.....Word of God, held in the Ark....Word made flesh, held in the womb of Mary......Does the bible say it's a bible? Is the word "Trinity" mentioned? Just something to ponder.
3) Scripture says "For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus" (1 Tim. 2:5). But your church makes Paul a liar again by promoting that Mary is another mediator between God and man and hence, making her a "mediatrix".
4) The doctrine of the Assumption is a big lie. Only Christ's body never tasted decay according to Scripture. Everyone else including Mary returned to dust.
@HokieBlitz77 Infants, senile geriatrics, mentally handicapped persons are not free from original sin. If you are familiar with how God judged Jacob and Esau before they were born (Rom. 9:11-13), you will know that even those in their mothers' wombs are already guilty of sin. David testifies to this truth when he said:
"Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me." (Ps. 51:5)
They may not be free from original sin but they are certainly free of actual sin, since they are not conscious of their actions! Guaranteed most of them have been baptized, thus their original sin is forgiven.
Nice ignoring of my comment about what the protestant reformers believed ;)
@HokieBlitz77 "They may not be free from original sin but they are certainly free of actual sin, since they are not conscious of their actions!"
But why does your church teach that Mary was free of both original and actual sins? Did Paul make any exception when he said "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" in Romans 3:23?
@mpenaco You are sure weilding a sharp sword, brother. Satan will hate you for this because you know the word of God. Jesus will tell you. Well done my faithful servant. Jesus said, His follower knows His voice. You sure are. Slay them my friend with the word of God.
Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
@HokieBlitz77 In the Bible, forgiveness happens only after a person repents of his/her sins. When Zaccheus the tax collector repented and promised to repay what he owed, Jesus immediately pronounced salvation for him. When the good thief repented before dying on the cross with Jesus, he was promised paradise as his final destination. Can infants repent? No? So your baptismal ceremony for them is useless.
@HokieBlitz77 Yes, you worship false gods and represent them with stone images. Catholics stand, kneel and bow down to images of Mary and other saints. They call to them and ask them for mercy, protection, blessings and intercession. Only God has the power to grant all these but Catholics are asking them not from God from the spirits of dead people. God will not be happy.
He never understood the Gospel in the first place. I don't care how many ThD does he have. I born catholic (It's not an exaggeration to say that I was born one, as I never chose to be one), and I know very well that the "Faith only" doctrine is the basis of the Gospel. Of course faith, if real, will give place to good works, but good works don't work separately from faith, as a second prerequisite to salvation. Otherwise, who diserves to be save?
@redeemerslove No, but neither did Peter and Paul (The apostles). The real knowledge about the Lord comes from the Lord, not from a University (however I am not implying that I know Him more than others, though I would be very astonished if Hahn is right).
@redeemerslove Those who were born Catholic never paid attention if they are not Catholic now . if they were actual educated Catholics then they would still be .
@redeemerslove Did you know that in every 7 days a new protestant denomination is born? Did you also know that in Tenn last year there were considerably fewer people converting to the Baptist denominations? these are fun factoids to keep in mind .
@CAtholic29 Actually we are loosing people and holding steady due to immigrants. We gain about 350,000/yr and loose more than that. I am not sure of the exact numbers, however.
@fansdesofia No Where in the Bible does it say that we are saved by faith alone. Luther mater of fact new this so he added the word Alone to Romans 3:28 in his German Translation as well as taking out James ,Hebrews, Revelations , Jude and 7 Old testament books because they all contradicted solo fie in some way

The Roman Catholic Church teaches unbiblical doctorines and celebrates Pagan holidays like Christmas
Catholics pray to Saints and Mary which is completely unbiblical.
Catholics bow down before images and statues and pray to them !
Catholics have Sunday as the Sabbath.
Catholics disobey the Bible by calling the priest "Father." (read Matthew 23:9)
CATHOLICS CHANGED GOD'S COMMADMENTS !
Mcstroke57 1 month ago
@Mcstroke57 You are not accurate and are not correct in what you say Catholics believe and that is your fault because you do not wish to know the truth and would rather bask in ignorance and hatred, both unchristian attitudes.
22grena 3 weeks ago
@22grena If you feel I have erred in anything, then bear witness of that error from the scripture.
Mcstroke57 3 weeks ago
@Mcstroke57 Well I would have to know what your particular belief is but lets take your accusation that Catholics disobey the Bible by calling a priest "Father."
Was meant to be taken literally? Logic would indicate the answer is no. Are children forbidden from calling their parent 'father'?
22grena 3 weeks ago
@Mcstroke57 The term father is used freely in the Bible. For example, Joseph tells his brothers 'So it was not you who sent me here, but God; and he has made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house and ruler over all the land of Egypt" (Gen. 45:8).
Acts 7:2, where Stephen refers to "our father Abraham," or in Romans 9:10, where Paul speaks of "our father Isaac."
22grena 3 weeks ago
@Mcstroke57 There are numerous examples in the New Testament of the term "father" being used as a form of address and reference, even for men who are not biologically related to the speaker. There are, in fact, so many uses of "father" in the New Testament, that your Fundamentalist interpretation of Matthew 23 (and the objection to Catholics calling priests "father") must be wrong.
22grena 3 weeks ago
@Mcstroke57 A careful examination of the context of Matthew 23 shows that Jesus didn’t intend for his words here to be understood literally. The whole passage reads, "But you are not to be called ‘rabbi,’ for you have one teacher, and you are all brethren. And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven. Neither be called ‘masters,’ for you have one master, the Christ" (Matt. 23:8–10).
22grena 3 weeks ago
@Mcstroke57 So is Jesus also prohibiting the word 'teacher' too.
Apparently not as he says in Matthew 28:19–20, Christ himself appointed certain men to be teachers in his Church: "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations . . . teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you
22grena 3 weeks ago
@Mcstroke57 ." Paul speaks of his commission as a teacher: "For this I was appointed a preacher and apostle . . . a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth" (1 Tim. 2:7); "For this gospel I was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher" (2 Tim. 1:11). He also reminds us that the Church has an office of teacher:
22grena 3 weeks ago
@Mcstroke57 "God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers" (1 Cor. 12:28); and "his gifts were that some should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers" (Eph. 4:11). There is no doubt that Paul was not violating Christ’s teaching in Matthew 23 by referring so often to others as "teachers."
22grena 3 weeks ago
@Mcstroke57 Fundamentalists themselves slip up on this point by calling all sorts of people "doctor," for example, medical doctors, as well as professors and scientists who have Ph.D. degrees (i.e., doctorates). What they fail to realize is that "doctor" is simply the Latin word for "teacher."
22grena 3 weeks ago
@Mcstroke57 Even "Mister" and "Mistress" ("Mrs.") are forms of the word "master," also mentioned by Jesus. So if his words in Matthew 23 were meant to be taken literally, Fundamentalists would be just as guilty for using the word "teacher" and "doctor" and "mister" as Catholics for saying "father." But clearly, that would be a misunderstanding of Christ’s words.
22grena 3 weeks ago
@Mcstroke57 Throughout the world, some people have been tempted to look upon religious leaders who are mere mortals as if they were an individual’s supreme source of spiritual instruction, nourishment, and protection. The tendency to turn mere men into "gurus" is worldwide.
This was also a temptation in the Jewish world of Jesus’ day, when famous rabbinical leaders, especially those who founded important schools, such as Hillel and Shammai, were highly exalted by their disciples.
22grena 3 weeks ago
@Mcstroke57 It is this elevation of an individual man—the formation of a "cult of personality" around him—of which Jesus is speaking when he warns against attributing to someone an undue role as master, father, or teacher.
He is not forbidding the perfunctory use of honorifics nor forbidding us to recognize that the person does have a role as a spiritual father and teacher. The example of his own apostles shows us that.
22grena 3 weeks ago
@Mcstroke57 Well I have bore witness to Catholic doctrine with reference to Sacred Scripture. What do you think?
22grena 2 weeks ago
@22grena No one in the bible has ever called a christian "father" and why would you even call someone father if he isn't your father ?
Mcstroke57 2 weeks ago
@Mcstroke57 I have to say I was no expecting such an amazing reply to the Biblical support for catholic doctrine, you have truly pulled the carpet from under my feet, not.
Ita as I thought. To be a fundementalist you have to keep things really simple anf of course, when you hear the truth, shut your ears.
22grena 2 weeks ago
@22grena Is it not truth that nobody called a christian in the bible father ?
Mcstroke57 2 weeks ago
@Mcstroke57 ayou are avoiding my question re the Scriptures. You are a fairly typical one dimensional fundementalist, and dangerous for that because you dont use you God given intelligence. You have misunderstood what Jesus was saying in those Scriptures. Wgat about his opinion of the word 'teacher (Rabbi) and 'master. A deafening silence from you because you know you are wrong.'
22grena 2 weeks ago
@Mcstroke57 Now maybe I was expecting to much from you but since you challenged me to produce Scriptural evidence, well the very least I should expect in reply is your reason why I am wrong. I know there are some people who cannot be reached by the truth and in any case do not wish to hear it.

A wicked and adulterous generation.
cheagan 4 months ago
@VictorLepanto Nevermind the fact that whenever Jesus performed a miracle, it was witnessed, and verified as true.
You shall be given no sign but the sign of Jonah the prophet, who was in the belly of the whale three days and nights.
cheagan 4 months ago
@cheagan: If you want to accuse me of being a Pharisee, you might do well to contemplate the Pharisee in the mirror.
But what you has absolutely no relationship to the previous statement. What do miracles & their witnesses have to do w/ Jesus being called the Lamb of God? Scott Hahn's point about Jesus being called the Lamb of God has to do w/ the point in the Mass were "Agnus Dei" is recited. "Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us." Revelations is the Mass.
VictorLepanto 4 months ago
@cheagan Jesus never performed any miracle, untill you provide witnesses. You have NONE. Jonah the prophet, a silly kindergarten story.

CATHOLIC DEAD WORSHIPING
By this example also, others there bury those who die by lightning as beloved of God, and honour them with temples, and erect statues of the dead in their own forms. Thence, in like manner, the rulers in different places were emulous of like honour, and very many of them honoured the tombs of those who were beloved of them, though not dying by lightning, with temples and statues, and lighted up altars, and ordered them to be adored as gods.

God will be ashamed to call you his church.
mpenaco 5 months ago
@mpenaco To say God would be ashamed to call us his church because of scandals in the church, then that means God is ashamed to call us his children. Are you perfect? Have you ever told a lie before? Have you ever stolen something? Have you ever looked at a woman with lust and hated someone? If so, God should be ashamed to call you his child then, but no, God is a all living and merciful God. "He who is without sin cast the first stone."
dis00612 5 months ago
@dis00612 None of us is perfect. We are all guilty of sin. But what is your church doing? Instead of acknowledging this sinfulness of man, it is promoting the sinlessness of Mary, a human being like you and me. I have pointed out to you not once but many times that your church is not following God's prescription for disciplining abusive priests(1 Cor. 5). If your church is serious in her desire to follow Christ, why the continued disregard for God's word in this important area?
mpenaco 5 months ago
The Body of Christ is unfortunately divided. All Churches are founded by men - except for the Catholic Church which was founded by Christ 2,000 years ago. Please show me in the Bible where it says that Jesus wants/allows division. "And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build MY CHURCH, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it." ~ Matthew 16:17-19 Note it does not say churchES.
turnersinva 6 months ago
@turnersinva The Church of God transcends religious membership. God's holy people are scatterred all of the world. Some of them are in your church - those who keep God's commandments, and many others are outside your church. Listen to what the Bible says about where God's people are:"...and with your blood you purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and nation. You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth." (Rev 5-9-10)
mpenaco 5 months ago
@turnersinva You quoted Matthew 16:17-19 to support your belief that the CC was the church that Christ built. But judging from the evil doctrines that your church promotes and its total disregard for Paul's instruction on how sexual immorality cases should be handled, it is highly doubtful that the gates of hell has not already prevailed against your church. The Church that Christ bult protects the least of our brothers and punishes the evil doers. Your church failed to do this.

@redeemerslove-christianity has only one interpretation for the scriptures for last 2000 years.Even though figuratively there may be multiple meanings for a given bible passage, those meanings will never contradict each other. Your private interpretation of scriptures, started some 1650 years back, when Roman empire fused idolatry into God's Church corrupting it.Since government wanted to consolidate power,it allowed people to keep their old idols but with new christian names.
alrok777 6 months ago

The reason for the difference is clear from the context.
alrok777 7 months ago
There are even nine places where the Scriptures refer to Peter as Cephas, the Aramaic form of his name. Or why did not the Holy Spirit just repeat the word petros, as Catholic defenders speculate He did in the Aramaic? Then Matthew 16:18 would read, "You are Peter (Petros), and upon this rock (petros) I will build My church."
alrok777 7 months ago
The inspired New Testament Scriptures were written in Greek, not Aramaic. What Jesus might have said in Aramaic is conjecture. Furthermore, if, as some contend, the Aramaic is clear but the Greek inadequate or confusing, why did not the Holy Spirit simply import the Aramaic words? There are many such examples in the New Testament.
alrok777 7 months ago
What is clear is that Rome’s interpretation of Matthew 16:18 cannot bear the scrutiny of close examination. Consequently, Roman Catholic defenders must move the discussion off the inspired page and onto the field of speculation.
alrok777 7 months ago
He did not change His words but repeated Peter’s Aramaic name Kepha. What Christ said, they claim, was: "You are Kepha, and upon this kepha I will build my Church." And so, they say, it is clear that Peter was to be the foundation upon which the Church would be built.
alrok777 7 months ago

Is there any God besides Me, Or is there any other Rock? I know of none. —Isaiah 44:8
alrok777 7 months ago
The context argues for interpreting "this rock" as referring back to the revelation and its content. In other words, the Lord Jesus as "the Christ, the Son of the living God" (Matthew 16:16) would be the solid rock upon which the Christian faith would rest. Every doctrine and practice would be founded upon Him. Every true believer would hold to a common conviction: Jesus is "the Christ, the Son of the living God" (Matthew 16:16).
alrok777 7 months ago
When Peter correctly answered Jesus’ question as to His identity, the Lord remarked, "Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven" (Matthew 16:17). Peter’s insight into Jesus’ true identity was a revelation from God. In this context, Jesus, making a play on words, says, "You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church" (Matthew 16:18).
alrok777 7 months ago
The context of Matthew 16:13-20 is not about Peter; it is about Jesus. It starts with a question that Jesus raises about His identity: "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?" (Matthew 16:13). It reaches a climax with Peter’s declaration: "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God" (Matthew 16:16). It concludes with the Lord warning His disciples "that they should tell no one that He was the Christ" (Matthew 16:20).
alrok777 7 months ago
@alrok777 Really?
Blomberg [Baptist Theologian]).
redeemerslove 6 months ago
To determine the best interpretation, the reader would have had to look more closely at the context. This is the second and greatest weakness with the Roman Catholic interpretation: It fails to give proper emphasis to the context.
alrok777 7 months ago

“Above all you must understand this, no prophecy in scripture is a matter of private interpretation” (2 Peter 1:20).
“Stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by epistle” (2 The 2:15).
“Obey your prelates [bishops] and defer to them” (Hebrews 13:17a, NASB).
redeemerslove 6 months ago
Anyone reading the Gospel of Matthew in the original Greek language would have noticed the difference. The reader would have had to pause and decide what was meant by "upon this rock" (Matthew 16:18). The reader would not immediately have equated the rock (petra) with Peter (Petros), because the words are different.
alrok777 7 months ago
Peter’s name, Petros, on the other hand, is masculine in gender and refers to a boulder or a detached stone. Greek literature also uses it of a small stone that might be picked up and thrown.
What Jesus said to Peter could be translated, "You are Stone, and upon this bedrock I will build My church." His choice of words would indicate that the rock on which the church would be built was something other than Peter.
alrok777 7 months ago
The word Jesus chose to use for rock, petra, is a feminine noun that refers to a mass of rock. The New Testament uses this word in Matthew 7:24,25 to refer to the bedrock upon which a wise man built his house. Petra is also found later in Matthew’s Gospel with reference to Jesus’ tomb, which workers had carved out of solid rock (Matthew 27:60).
alrok777 7 months ago

So if peter was called petros,it was because he Jesus considered him only a small, unstable stone.
alrok777 7 months ago
In the Gospel of Matthew, when Jesus said to Simon, "You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church" (Matthew 16:18), His choice of words was significant. Though Peter’s name means rock (petros), Jesus did not say, "You are Peter (Petros), and upon this rock (petros-which accurately means a small unstable stone) I will build my church." What He said was, "You are Peter (Petros), and upon this rock (petra-which means a large firm mass of rock) I will build My church."
alrok777 7 months ago
The Roman Catholic Church interprets Jesus here to say, "You are Peter, and upon you, Peter, I will build My church." Peter would be the rock upon which the Church would be built . He would be the "prince of all the apostles and visible head of the whole church."
There are several problems with this interpretation. The first is that someone reading Matthew’s Gospel in Greek, the original language of the New Testament, would not have immediately concluded that Peter was the rock.
alrok777 7 months ago
such brandings were less effective against prots, inorder to fulfill the prophecy of Jesus-"You are peter(petros-masculine noun in greek, meaning a small stone) and i shall build my church(non feminist protestantism) on this rock(petra-feminine noun in greek, meaning a large mass of rock, not the degrading dead body of peter buried under vatican as catholics claim/believe)and gates of hell(catholicism and oter false religions/ideologies) will not prevail over it".

While God prohibits the making of graven images for worship, the your church promotes the opposite.
mpenaco 6 months ago
@mpenaco Please enlighten us... what is contrary to the teachings of Christ? "All have sinned" Did Jesus sin? No. We do not worship images.
HokieBlitz77 5 months ago
@HokieBlitz77 Your Marian doctrines, the Purgatory, Papal Infallibiity -- all of these are contrary to Scripture and must rejected as false teachings. When Paul says "all have sinned" he refers to all except Jesus because Jesus is God himself. Listen to how your Saint Augustine puts it: "He, Christ, alone being made a man but remaining God never had any sin nor did He take on flesh of sin, though He took flesh of the sin of His mother."
mpenaco 5 months ago
@mpenaco Do tell us where in Scripture they contradict! The simple fact that there is one exception to that "all" means there could be others; like infants, senile geriatrics, mentally handicapped persons. You might be interested in knowing that two of the fathers of the Reformation, Luther and Calvin, as well as other reformers, believed in the sinlessness of Mary.
HokieBlitz77 5 months ago

But in the process, you contradict God's word.
mpenaco 5 months ago
@HokieBlitz77 "Let me ask you, if I were to ask you to pray for me because I am sick or that my mother is in the hospital, would you pray at my request?"
Of course I would because that's what God wants us to do -- to pray for one another. In fact Christ himself gave us an example in John 17 when he prayed for God's people. But we pray for those who are living, those who still have the opportunity to repent and change their lives. The dead cannot repent so our prayers for them are useless.
mpenaco 5 months ago
@HokieBlitz77 Revelation 11 is not talking about Mary. The Ark of the Covenant is the real ark which contains the holy commandments of God. There is nothing there that says the ark is Mary or that the ark is a woman. To say that the ark represents the woman Mary is to add a foolish human opinion to the perfect word of God.
mpenaco 5 months ago

@mpenaco

@fansdesofia I love the "I was born a Catholic therefore I am a Ph.D." argument! LOL!

@redeemerslove How did you know I have a PhD?
fansdesofia 7 months ago
@fansdesofia In Catholic theology?
redeemerslove 7 months ago
@redeemerslove No, but neither did Peter and Paul (The apostles). The real knowledge about the Lord comes from the Lord, not from a University (however I am not implying that I know Him more than others, though I would be very astonished if Hahn is right).

@redeemerslove Those who were born Catholic never paid attention if they are not Catholic now . if they were actual educated Catholics then they would still be .
CAtholic29 7 months ago
@CAtholic29 My point exactly. Education, does not mean education in theology. One guy claimed to be a Ph.D. I asked, "In what, basket weaving?"

@redeemerslove Good point some of these people are still so blinded

@CAtholic29 Indeed.

@redeemerslove Did you know that in every 7 days a new protestant denomination is born? Did you also know that in Tenn last year there were considerably fewer people converting to the Baptist denominations? these are fun factoids to keep in mind .
The RCIA groups seem to be running strong

@CAtholic29 Actually we are loosing people and holding steady due to immigrants. We gain about 350,000/yr and loose more than that. I am not sure of the exact numbers, however.

@redeemerslove Thanks for that update . I will keep that in mind .
