  • at an older age it is harder to hear. Good for her.

  • I just got this surgery yesterday........ It hurts and I was throwing up for hours

  • Science ftw, religion FTL

  • how much does this hearing thing cost?

  • @chobiv7

Just the device is $8,000. The surgery was more than that. Insurance payed for most of it.

  • i LOL'd when she got 'hamburger' from 'hot dog' xP i have a CI as well, im deaf in my left ear and i have a hearing aid in my right ear. i relate to this a lot haha, thanks for posting! :)

  • "hot dog"

    "hamburger"

  • I hate when people are asking questions that are too hard to explain the answers for.

  • After a long time using a CI how does the quality of the sound/ability to discern compare to normal hearing on a scale of 1-10, if 10 is good hearing?

  • @kevinvolkmann

Hard to answer that. I would have to say a 6. If she had two implants I would bump it up to 7-8.

  • good for you :)

  • when she said "hamburr" (4:52) it reminded me of steve martin in the pink panther, lol XD

  • I wish I could turn my ears off sometimes

  • This is called good science :D. Too bad our country is like "OO HERING INPLANT? LETS MAEK IT MONITOR PPL LOL, AND MAK BOMBS WITH IT."

  • @xxxxAXIxxxx what a fresh and riveting commentary, I am truly impressed.

  • This is great she did so fantastic!

  • I dont understand this video...

  • how did she know how to talk?

  • @WanApple59

She only had recently lost her hearing due to Meningitis.

  • @CountRockula1 if this was her first time hearing, she couldn't say if it's loud or quiet, good or hard to hear...

  • @Glanur2

Please read the description before making a know it all comment. Please.

  • @CountRockula1 I did, even before posting the comment :-D I just said why, even without reading the information, you would know that it's not the first time, because some others asked it. Anyway, this implant is so awesome...a great step for medicine

  • @WanApple59 It says why in the description.

  • 2:52 can you hear my voice ? yam lol

  • My mother is an Audiologist for Cochlear Australia as Global Product Training Manager, But she was a Senior Audiologist for 20 years at Sydney Cochlear Implant Centre. And I have always been around this technology since I was about 7 years old and while watching this video I can see in my mind what the Audiologist is doing.

  • These are amazing :D I'm so glad I'm not deaf but watching people's lives change like this is amazing to me!

  • I do not understand why she can talk that well :0!

  • @sabichou410 not all deff ppl are mute. you can be born def but still learn how to talk.

  • @sabichou410 Because she had meningitis and likely knew how to talk well before she went deaf.

  • I remember getting my hearing aids! I am about 40-50 percent deaf! I just got my hearing tested again and they never did tell me the results. I remember how much of a difference they make. I keep hearing about the implant and wondering how well they work so i was watching video's. Your video was one of the better ones with turning them on! most people just show the first reaction. I have possibility of loosing my hearing completely one day. I am keeping an opened mind on the implant or not <3

  • @OceanPrincessNeptune I know what you are talking about. I start hearing at 60db, I have meniere disease, and I may loose my hearing completely someday. I am 30 now, and watching movies like this make me fell better and even wonder having a baby one day (I was really afraid of having one and giving this disease as birth gift to him. That would make me terribly sad). There is hope then! sorry for my english!

  • @servepraque Your English is great!

  • @OceanPrincessNeptune and when I first got my hearing aids, i couldnt imagine how bad I used to hear everything. My life has changed a lot since then. I remember me talking to my husband and asking what is this all the time. and he answered simple things like: this is the rain on the window, or, this is a bird, or a door being closed... incredible times those!

  • @servepraque yeah! I had no idea i was missing out on so many different sounds! I still get so mad that when i take my hearing aids off i cant hear the rain if its raining at night! which i love to do! And many people forget i'm partly deaf i have to remind people!

  • @OceanPrincessNeptune thats it! the sound of rain! oh I love that sound... And I need batteries to hear that! You know what? I dont feel handicaped at all (with my hearing aids, of course. cant live without them anymore!), but sometimes is so hard to prove to people that I am not completely normal, that I have some troubles in a few situations, that I cant hear everything all the time... because people cant see what I dont hear, and it makes me look like a fake deaf!

  • @servepraque Right! People can't see hearing aids unless hair is up! Half the time people hug my and the end up making them push inside my hear which hurts! ( I'm short, 4'11") I have to tell them to go easy on me! And my mother( I'm 19 and trying to find a job so i can move out) gets so angry with me when she has to call for me more then once! I always have so say I didn't hear her! and shes always says its because I just didn't want to.It is hard to make people understand we can't always hear

  • @OceanPrincessNeptune well, since my entire family use hearing aids, we got used to them (and to not hearing, or not answering the right thing, like: how old are you? and I answer: yes, yes, i did it!). we all started losing hearing at age of 23-26. Its weird, I know, and its progressive (it doesnt bother me) But the hug thing its always a problem. Whenever someone hugs me, I hear a loud microphony inside my head! and people look at me suprised, asking themselves "what the hell was that noise?"!

  • @servepraque Yeah! The other for me is i like seeing the persons face when their talking and people like to walk around while talking to me! I have to say I cant hear them and please look at me, I have had a BUNCH of ear infections, My first was at 6 months I believe and I have had my left ear completely reconstructed the ear canal and ear drum. Before i had it done i had an ear infection for a year straight. Not fun! I also have turner syndrome and their was already a risk of not hearing.

  • @OceanPrincessNeptune I found out that I had a hearing problem when I was at the vet hospital 7 years ago (I am a veterinarian) and I couldnt hear people using surgery masks! I was trying to look to their mouths to "hear" something! But we need to live with the genetic disorders (I have bilateral Menière Disease, things may get worse year after year for me, but I am just fine with that now. I found a very gentle and lovely husband who takes care of me, and loves me half deaf as I am!).

  • lol at hamburger

  • how does she talk so well for someone deaf?

  • @brunetteDUH

I think it's because she lost her hearing so recent to the video.

  • @brunetteDUH as the description says, she wasn't always deaf. She only lost her hearing 2.5 months prior.

  • I like watching the kids get their hearing better. I love their questions.

  • I hope this works out for you. i think its amazing that you are getting a chance to be able to hear. something that everyone else takes for granted. after watching this vido along with others I will charish the gifts i have so much more now. thank you for this video and i hope things get better for you and im sure they will.

  • i had to do this once,

  • she is beautiful.! c:

  • this girl is awesome. and she going to be gorgeous when shes older

  • Awesome.

  • Lol "hamburger"

  • @DMoneyyxx haha yeah, that part was soo cute :D

  • @gamerx9191 :D

  • God bless you . (:

  • gongrats girl .

make a update video if you want , im curious about your progress. best wishes.

  • she is adorable

  • Kinda cool, i never seen this setup done before.

How does this work with an infant who is born deaf and gets this?

They just put it on a default setting? And they let the kid play with the adjustments until they are happy with it?

  • The woman helping her with the device.. is she a Dr.? Does anyone know her job title?

  • @courtney2323

She is an Audiologist or AuD.

  • @CountRockula1 Thanks! Im interested in doing that. What an AMAZING JOB. Im deaf in my left ear though ive never had surgery or anything for it because I hear fine in my right. Though I wonder what the world would sound like with two "good" ears. This is just incredibly interesting to me. How is she doing now.. over a yr later?

  • @CountRockula1 how old is she

  • @balana955

In the video she is 12

  • This girl is crazy adorable! Super funny expressions! She reminds me of one of my nieces big time!

  • @Anon12356 What are you implying my friend?

  • @pkcrossing89

I guess a lot of men are getting implants soon?

  • @Anon12356 Funny. I was thinking pedophilia.

  • she looks like Justin bieber!!

  • @ceddin515 Thats cuz bieber looks like a girl. Shes cute.

  • I love her facial expressions lol

  • our friend lost hearing in her left ear from bacterial menigitis :( but you seem like you're doing great!!

  • She speaks incredibly well. How long has she been deaf before the implant?

  • @DoggyHateFire The description says it. She had been deaf for 2 and a half months before that.

  • @DoggyHateFire In the desc it says she got Bacterial Meningitis about 2 months ago so that is why she speaks well.

  • She is so cute. That's got to be hard going deaf like that at her age. Amazing though. What an incredible thing science has created for some people. That's definitely a blessing for many people.

  • Her unintended sarcasm makes this video so awesome.. adorable.. hope things worked out for her.

  • thats real interesting. i had viral meningitis at 6 weeks. i can hear fine but i have some cognitive issues that have been labeled borderline aspergers. i know i was lucky to keep my hearing tho. i dunno what i would do if i couldn't hear the music i play and listen to. these videos are awesome, way to go science.

  • It has been over a month since I have had a processor that will allow me to do the work that I have dreamed of doing. Consider if you ever wanted to travel, or maybe your child might want to be a foreign exchange student ,, think of all the dreams and possibilities that could suddenly be taken away from you. I am at a point now where I am about to lose everything I have worked so hard to achieve. Don’t let this happen to your child or loved one.

  • Aw! She is pretty and cute! I'm happy for her to hear with CI. How is her CI doing so far?

  • This girl is super cute.

  • Excellent job everyone!!!!!!!

  • For a child with such a hearing loss in both ears, she speaks so clearly in this video! Wonderful job!

  • she seems very smart. i wish her the best :D

  • @nikirylee Oh, so deaf people without CI are not smart?

  • She is so calm, taking it all in stride when it must be super overwelming!

  • aww, she looks so cute. she's going to live a great life.:)

  • It was a great moment for her, hope implant will help her a lot in the futur !

  • Hi.....I am mrsmay's Mom......and I sure appreciate the info you have given us about what to expect when my grandaughter gets her implant! She is a smart little cookie....and I am SURE she will catch on well!! ;-)

  • She is profoundly deaf in her left ear, and severe to profound in her right ear. I am so curious to see what it is that she will be hearing. She does wear a hearing aid on her right side, and she hears well with that, but without it, she hears nothing

  • @mrsmay0809

Hi this is Evelyns Dad, at first Evelyn had a hard time making out words. She described the sounds as a far away walkie talkie. Now a few months later and after multiple re-mappings it is working quite well. The kids do have to practice using them with the listening exercises. She can now make out words, speech, and the TV pretty well and she is still improving every day. Now she describes the sound as being like a walkie but a good one that is close up. Hope this helps.

  • @CountRockula1 HI,

THank you for responding. Does your daughter have uni or bilateral hearing loss? She speaks so well on the video. I am just worried taht my 4 year old daughter will not tolerate it as it will not sound like anything she has ever heard.

  • Evelyn has profound hearing loss in both ears. We decided to implant only her left ear as she does have about 5-10% hearing remaining in her right ear. Her hearing was perfect 3 months prior to the implant which explains why she can still speak so clearly. I can't say what the results are going to be with your daughter. Being so young I'm sure she will adapt quite easily. Kids are so amazingly resilient. My bet is that she'll think it's pretty cool to hear your voice.

  • @CountRockula1 How was her hearing perfect 3 months prior to the implant if she lost her hearing at 2.5 months?

  • @LMA629

Wow you cought a mistake on the internet good job. I'm so sorry for my 2 week discrepency. Go bother someone else.

  • @CountRockula1 I wasn't trying to bother you I was just confused. I didn't have any mal-intent. Don't just jump on me like that. I'm still confused.

  • @CountRockula1 I think he misunderstood. From way he said he thinks she lost her hearing at 2.5 months old. I don't think he was trying to be a dick as much as he was inquiring.

  • @bigsean231

    @LMA629

If I read his comment wrong then I sincerely apologise. I get a ton of nasty comments on this vid and maybe jumped on this guy when I shouldn't have.

  • @LMA629 If she lost her hearing 2.5 months back, that means 3 months back, she had her hearing. What's hard to understand about that?

  • @LMA629 I'm thinking she lost her hearing 2.5 (or 3) months ago, not at 2.5 (or 3) months old... Just trying to be helpful! :) Beautiful video, congrats to Evelyn for regaining her hearing.

  • @CountRockula1 Did Evelyn get a Med-El, AB or Nuke CI? Also, which CI center did you use?

  • @discpad

She got the Nucleus by Cochlear (so far so good). The surgery took place at Virginia Mason in Seattle.

  • @mrsmay0809 She should go ahead and get bilaterally implanted.

  • Hi sweetheart! Are you totally deaf without your implant? How do the words (ice cream/hotdog/toothbrush) sound with the implant? Does it sound like they would to a person with "normal" hearing? The reason I ask, my 4 year old daughter will be getting an implant.

  • Have a wonderful life sweetheart.
