Chuck Leavell is a boss. Wish he'd stuck around longer (not that Sea Level isn't cool and all...) I think ABB would have remained more stable if he and Lamar had stuck it out longer.
I see that NBC's "Midnight Special" shows are now available on DVD. It sure would be nice to see the same from ABC's "In Conert" and CBS's "Don Kirshner's Rock Concert". There's some AMAZING material locked in vaults somewhere!
@Freethinker12341 Butch has been quoted as saying that Berry was just starting to come out of the funk he was in over Duane's death, and they were all excited about Chuck's involvement in the band. Just when things started looking up, Berry had his crash.
@k1re33 It was his last live performance. They had been working in the studio recording Brothers and Sisters when he died. The first two songs, Wasted Words and Ramblin' Man, were Berry's bass tracks and they made it onto the album. The rest were done by Lamar Williams.
no this is just killing me god bless Chuck but man oh man the burden dropped on dickey's shoulders is palpable he's a strong s.o.b seriously. Hats off to Gregg I mean he's really going for it and feeling those lyrics its ABC wheres Duane gotta nail it for my big brother. Berry again steps away from the camera but his playing he's really trying to push Dickey he's really driving the bass lines during Dickeys solo - Chucks keyboards aren't cutting it and its not Chucks fault.
Piano solo during whipping post, thats a treat. For some reason they haven't been using a pianist besides greg on the allman and the ocasional aint wastin time no more piano, but nothing like chuck. liked page during the beacon run, downloaded that show, amazing. piano during liz reed that show. LONG LIVE DUANE ALLMAN and BERRY OAKLEY
this is stunning to watch. just been watching the latest beacon run on moogis. to see chuck jammin' beside gregg is too much man. got tix to see them in may at greek in l.a. can't wait.
It appears that Dickey is playing Duane's tobacco-burst Les Paul in this video. Dickey's own guitar by '72 was his famous '57 gold top. If I'm not mistaken, Dickey eventually gave the guitar seen here to Duane's daughter, Galadrielle, and it is now on display at the Rock N Roll Hall fo Fame.
that's actually a different guitar... the guitar that dickey is playing has "zebra" style pickups, whereas duane's had pickup covers.... duane's les paul also was a much deeper color than the one seen here
Someone should point that out to the curators; maybe they'll change them. I'd like to see it loaned to Derek and Warren for recording, at least--not to take on the road. It would warm the cockles in the hearts of us old fans to hear it on record again in the next Allman Brothers album, which i understand they may begin work on.
If there ever was a supergroup, it was this one. They lost Duane and Berry, but could still hold their own against anyone else out there. They were even better than Clapton, who, as we all know, was God.
As much as think about where the Duane/Berry lineup would have progressed to, seeing the power in this second 6 man lineup makes me dream about where the Chuck/Berry lineup would have gone. That is a powerful Whipping Post. Chuck Leavell was the absolute right move.
This was bass player Berry Oakley's last show before he got killed in a motorcycle accident 9 days later in Macon. I remember when this was first broadcast on "In Concert"
Man, you talk about tough. If you're a southern rock band, tragedy seems to be a prerequisite for you. Allman's losing Duane and Berry. The Van Zant's losing a brother. I know I am missing some. Cool video folks-just wish there was more!
God Greg was hot!

@caryzia you know now that you mention it ..... i'm not sure ...been a bit out of the fold of recent years ... will have a think :) cheers :)

@Scotiadave I looked it up & yes it was...BO passed a week later.
I also found out that Cher's "Half Breed" was the song that kept Ramblin' Man from being #1!

@caryzia Ace, thanks for looking that up :)

Love what Chuck did with his solo. This is an absolutely intense version of this song. The only live performance of this six man lineup, right?
abbgt 2 years ago
@abbgt I think Chuck may have only played this one gig with BO, aside from rehearsals. I'd have to double check that...

@bigdaveonbass: Sadly, Lamar is another Brother who died far too young.

@dude5002: I'd like to see Bruce Katz perform more often with the Brothers; he's a brilliant keyboardist with wonderful taste in his playing.

That's Chuck Leavell alright. He was in the band at that point. In fact, he took Berry to the hospital in his car after the accident.

They were so ahead of their time that people didn't even know how to dance to this song. Not that it's a dance song. Poor Berry.
