@Entzivean it's a great sounding amp, but nowadays it's a tad overpriced in my opinion. It lacks separate gain and EQ controls for the clean and dirty channels, so you have to buy two (ha!) or compromise on one of the two settings.
@Neylus sorry, got rid of both the AFD and the 2555SL - now own a Mesa Stiletto Duece and an old two channel Dual Rectifier. The Recto is the best amp I ever played!
Ive got the AFD and used to own the JCM, like the AFD more, the sound is just awesome, pure Slash. It is pretty toppy but its still fat as hell, kicks the JCM's teeth in.
@Neylus ... but impossible to dial in a good clean and lead tone at the same time: buy two! ;-) AFD100: very distinctive sounds, #34 is not for me though, much to trebly. AFD mode is a good high gain channel, typical Slash signature sound.
Great video. Very logical test. Good job. Funny how the comments vary. I thought the AFD sounded better, more full. The JCM seemed more thin and trebly.
Hi I also own Both these amps check my videos to hear them both playing a variety of tunes. The SL2555 is the better amp much more versatile with a great clean tone.
First off, thank you so much for taking the time to do this. I found your video extremely helpful. The conclusion I'm coming to is that both of these amps have their own distinct voice. At 5, the AFD sounds good, it's very present and articulate, the JCM sounds warmer. With the Gain at 10, the AFD sounds a little fuller than before, but still a little thin. The JCM sounds like a UYI tone, which rules.
@mashandflutter Finally, with your settings, the AFD sounds harsh and too thin to me. The JCM with your settings sounds very balanced and full. I think at some point I'm just going to have to own both of these amps. Any chance you could do one more test video? I'm curious to the comparison between the amps with the bass knob maxed out. The final setting on the AFD was so piercing and the bass was on 6?
@raosc70 JCM: trusted workhorse, great distorted rhythm and lead tones, nice cleans too, but not possible to dial in both at the same time...; AFD100: good sounds for lead and rhythm in AFD mode, boost function (effects loop switch) is cool for solos. #34 mode sounds like treble spanking shit to me. I cannot believe this is what Slash uses all the time.
Its all about your fucked up wrong settings dude, thats why you dont prefer the afd

@marktestroote Thanks. Any hearing protection at those settings? What are your favorite master/lead settings?

and does the jcm have a good distortion tone? it sounded like a good tone but you know how video cameras dont always capture the tone 100%
Entzivean 3 months ago
@Entzivean the JCM has the best tone of the two in my opinion.

AFD sounds more meaty than the JCM2555SL. Less shrill, more body in the sound and sweeter.
sunsetsuperhero 9 months ago
Hey please can you do a video like that but with the 2555SL's settings like slash's one, and the AFD to ? thanks

2555 sounds like a dsl, AFD sounds like the offspring of an 800 and a slp

id own both, afd100 seems the way to go though.

I still think the AFD 100 is more versatile. Thanks for using the les paul, there is a noticable difference.

Yep still think selling the AFD paid off lol, thanks for taking the time to A/B these.

Even though you've owned the AFD for only a short period, if you could have only one of these amps, which would it be? And why?
mashandflutter 1 year ago
@mashandflutter like 'em both, but if I could only have one it would be the JCM 'cause it also has a clean channel.

@mashandflutter put up a short video of the AFD with bass on 10 (believe me, the JCM with bass on 10 is too much)
