  • Worked great!

  • My Golden Retriever would be fine with this, but my Jack Russell Terrier would take my hand off. Nothing a muzzle, a harness and a couple of cinder blocks can't cure, though. Wish me luck.

  • This guy seems a little too comfortable doing this. Granted he is a Vet, but he still he seems a little too doot dee doo about it. Notice too that the dog is just like no big deal!

I bet when the camera is not on he's got Barry White playing and some mood lighting!

  • I adopt dogs just so I can squeeze their buttholes.

  • im just going 2 use the cloth cause my pit would just would not stay still. & im not going 2 put my finger in there nope....

  • Can you use this on a budgie?

  • I might just pay the $60 to get this done... I'm not sure I'm ready to stick my finger up my dogs butt.

  • thanks for your video -- very useful!

  • Any advice on calming my dog down.I can touch her any-where apart from the dreaded Bum,and it costs me a small fortune. The only way I can see me doing this is tying her to the bath taps(which will probably come loose) Before that resort any advice PLEASE ?

  • any advice for a normal dob, like ~ GET YOUR FINGER AWAY OR I WILL BITE YOUR HAND ~ Attitude. As my dog, which I have had since a puppy, suffers from this and will not let me near her.I could tie her to the taps in the bath ? Any Advice before I go to the vets again Please !

  • Youtube..OUR HOPE CENTER ANIMAL HOARDING

  • Ok let me WARN you BEFORE you do this! I tryed this on my dog ... had my finger in his bum and started to try and feel for the gland ...... and then his bum moved on the inside (clenched) and ive never been the same since ... Im going to hell for putting my finger in my dogs bum ... its weird and I wish I had never tryed it ... I let my vet be the weirdo now.

  • My dog gets anal gland bleeding, any benefit of doing this? How often should it be done?

  • Comment removed

  • Heavily sedated dog for sure

  • It happens once in a while with one of my dogs. She will butt wipe on the floor so we know it's time!

  • I move more than this for a prostate exam!!! What a good dog...(or well-sedated!).

  • Great video. You could benefit from a camera man/woman but otherwise impressive explanations and directions.

  • If I go near my boarder collie, with this problem, she goes berserk !

  • He's cute. I need to take my dog here

  • Can I recommend you don't use a black dog? It's hard to see.

  • just take your animal to the vet, i do not trust that people will do this correctly at home.

  • So how much flax would you recommend for a cat?

  • i bet if the cameraman went to the toilet he would have had his tongue on its rim.....

  • Great video, instructive and to the point. Thanks for putting it into layman's terms.

  • I wasn't concerned until I saw the fridge, how calm the dog was about anal penetration, and the KY Jelly.

  • That oddly looks like a kitchen, putting the dog on the kitchen table. Remind me not to go over to your place for supper

  • Typo! How not hoe!

  • Thanks so much. My bulldog has issues with his anal glands, and I have been trying to figure out hoe to express them! This will surely help with his skin problems.

  • Veterinarians always stick their finger up for better drainage, but with gloves YOU can just squeeze the outside of of the anus, kinda like popping a pimple, it relieves your dog and you don't have to pay for your vet to do it. I would suggest doing it while your dog is in the bathtub right before you give them a bath. Its simple and works. If your dog has constant problems with their anal glands, then you should visit your veterinarian.

  • yeah ah........ i rather go and take my dog at the vet rather then stick my finger up my dogs ass.

  • Thank you!

  • this is something you can do it home it's fun just stick your finger in the dogs arse...so just give it a try!

  • DON'T DO IT! DOGS ARE LIKE HUMANS. ALL PEOPLE AND ANIMALS HAVE LUBRICATING GLANDS JUST INSIDE THE ANUS. HUMANS WIPE AND WASH! MOST DOGS DO NOT. THEREFORE RESIDUE CAKES UP! JUST WIPE WITH WARM WATER BEFORE DEFECATION. THIS ALLOWS THE ANAL GLANDS TO FREELY EXPRESS THEMSELVES NATURALLY. DON'T FALL FOR THE INCOMPETENCE OF VETS AND HELPERS INJURING YOUR DOGS FOR LIFE BY THIS INCOMPETENT MALPRACTICE PROCEDURE THAT ONLY MAKES YOUR DOG A LIFETIME RETURNING PURPOSELY INJURED PATIENT! YOUR DOGS FRIEND ED!

  • @EGMAG The video said as much. He said if you use a warm compress itll act as a preventative measure, dude

  • @Jmerzio warm compress <<

GOOD ENOUGH.When you search for dog anal expression you will find dogs both large & tiny are being subjected to this horrid form of alleged treatment that is done by incompetents who grossly irritate the anal opening, & many dogs suffer from unbearable swelling and then need surgery. All these quack money scheme unecessary treatments do is pay the bills for the doctors swimming pools homes and etc. Go ahead and destroy your dogs sphincter muscle too. Bullshit on that!

  • Also all i heard. was ANUS ANUS ANUS ANUS ANUS xD

  • Uranus, My anus! lol sorry xD

  • that dog looks like he needs a hug

  • @95thousandroses bwaaahaaahaaaa oh man I was hoping there would be a comment as gold as this. Thank you!!! But yeah my retriever needs this done, he juices when he gets scared, and im sick of it!

  • Thanks. Just what I need to know. Gus will be a lot more comfy soon

  • I have to do this to my dog.. no money for the vet.. OMG, I've attempted it and almost threw up. Here I go again...

  • that is the most understanding dog ever...

  • @sreno0207 You're not kidding! What a sweet face. I hope he got a good treat after all of that!!!!

  • Pretty awesome advice

  • i just to stick my finger in my pug's ass and he winked at me.

  • @AGTW31 that is funny

  • so how often do you give doggy the chocolate finger? you also missed the sniff test... :)

  • Thank you very much. Good advice and well presented.

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

  • anal stuff? this dude likes doing this way too much

  • thanks for the great info - I have a miniature dachshund with this problem and

now I know what to do!

  • 1-I would never do this.

2-If I did do this, I would never do it in my home.

3-If I did do this inside my home, I would never do it in my kitchen.

  • @Sweatervesticle I don't think it's a kitchen. It looks like a veterinary clinic's fridge for temp sensitive medications / lab samples.

  • This is embarrassing but its informative. My poor pup has butt problems... but its way too expensive to have vets do it. Wish me luck! HAHAHAHAHAHAHHA

  • The dog is like ...."Ummmm do.you mind!"

  • My cousin worked as a vet for nearly 20yrs, but last year was arrested on animal cruelty charges.

It turns out he unnecessarily put down potentially hundreds of animals over the years, diagnosing them terminally ill when in fact they were just suffering from minor, fully treatable ailments. He would give the owners nauseatingly ‘sympathetic’ talks about how lethal injection was “the best, kindest thing we can do”.

His reasons for doing this were unclear- he remained silent during his trial.

  • @SuperTruth77 Cool story bro.

  • @SuperTruth77 interesting story to tell right here on youtube

  • @SuperTruth77 I'm afraid the only answer may be to put him down. When he gets out of jail (and there's a very good chance he won't do much time at all), watch the fucker like a hawk. Sick and cruel; bad combo.

  • poor dog look his or her face is crying lol

  • I'm a little concerned about a guy who has a lisp and says anal and lubrication. Lol

  • Thanks for the demo. my pug seams to have this problem. we'll give it a try

  • Thank you

  • Great dog. May take two of us for our Bordie Collie. Must say I appreciate the vet encouraging people to do simply remedies on their animals. Shows he is in a profession because he loves it and not because he just wants to make money. What a concept!

  • Thanks!

  • Thank you for posting. we will do this and more regularly than if we had to take him to the vet each time we thought they were swollen.

  • I think I don't want to become a vet anymore...

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks for explaining this so clearly, my dog shows distress by scratching his belly and making patches of skin sore when his anal glands need unblocking. The dog clearly feels happier if this problem is kept to a minimum and the scratching habit lessens within a day once the glands are expressed. The hot compress info is really helpful, many thanks.

  • New info about omega-3 fatty acids for pets: "Ground flaxseeds are a source of alpha-linolenic acid, which has benefits in its own right. However, claims that it is a good substitute for EPA and DHA are false. Dogs and cats cannot convert more than 1-2% of it to essential EPA, and none to DHA.. Therefore, our pets need a direct (animal-based) source of those vital fatty acids." Dr. Jean Hofve, "Omega-3 Update: more info, more choices", LittleBigCat (dot) com

  • OMG, my dog would rub his butt on the floor constantly leaving these brown juicy stains...not it all makes sense, and yes it also stunk bad.

  • Thank you!!!!!!

  • Oh man, I just did this to my Pitt Bella & she was NOT docile and calm like this doggy! She growled and bucked. When our Vet did it he muzzled her but she was pretty still and calm she let out 1 growl and that was it. I swear I was gonna cry cuz my Bella was so upset :( She feels better now :)

  • @weirdispretty well i dont know anything about foreign languages so IM sorry

  • @jenniferjuniper97 you can if the vet was wearing gloves lol

  • This video was very helpful, when my husky wasn't going to the bathroom, I was freaking out. But learning about how to do this without going to the vet made me feel a lot better.

  • Is this dog sick?Or very old? I can't believe he is just staying there.

    What a good dog!

  • @watchmoivies123 yeah i second that, my dog just got hers emptied for the first time in her life today, and she screamed like there was no tomarrow

  • people shouldn't be encouraged to do this at home because of the possibility of injuries. squeeze too hard and you can damage your dog's glands and cause them further problems.

  • @mvrmsla7, why do you post a comment that has a little english but practically all spanish so ppl who dont speak spanish dont understand it???

  • @sheluvscrocs its french not spanish

  • Aww, poor dog. It doesnt hurt them does it?

  • 1:56 "Wtf are you doing?? O.o"

  • i need to try it....my vet chharges 20 bucks and petco is 8 bucks but petco didnt get it all out...dogs with allergies need this done ...my dog needs squeezed once a month or hell get an infection and smell like fish and scoot carpet and then vet bills...so im gonna order gloves,ky lube, and pet wipes then ill try it..now ill save money since kingsley is only 2 yrs old

  • awww poor dog:(

  • You can tell if your dog has plugged glands also if you find your dog scooting on the floor dragging his butt along the ground or your carpet ( horrors)

The dog feels the pressure inside there and it is really unpleasant for him or her.

Aslo this is not a pleasant thing to do, the dog feels much better after.

  • Louis is such a good dog....so calm. Thanks for the advice Dr. Jones.

  • Dr. Jones u r so cool i wish I had someone like u as my dogs vet. She is a chocolate lab 11 years old with anal gland problems. The vet wants to do a procedure called anal gland infusion before that happens I'm going to try the flax and i heard pure pumkin is good too. I have tried the hot compress she like them.

  • Thank You, Thank YOU, I am one of those ppl who has spent money on the vet just for this procedure. Now I think I'm confident enough to handle my dachshund's drip butt. That's what I call it ( DRIP BUTT)

  • Hello, venez sur ma chaîne mvrmsla7 d'éloïse chantal vlammiros, vous trouverez des vidéos films, des vidéos photos nombreuses sur tous mes love cats, bonne lecture, n'hésitez pas à les partager, thank you, good by, kiss !!!!!

  • Nice vet technique, picking up your dog and moving him by his tail ass hole.

  • The poor dog, you can tell it feels degraded.

My mother's dog stunk of anal gland juices and she ended up with an infection, smells so gross.

  • GROSS!!! i tried doing that but i just felt wrong. so i have my vet doing it. there's just something about sticking your finger in there where it don't belong... sorry but that just me.

  • Thank God for this video...my dog has constantly been looking at that area, I was worried that it was something worse......for love of my Boxer girl, I put on a rubber glove as directed and did the deed, it was just as you said, I could feel the sacs.....they were so full and one was infected....trust me.....will call vet for antibiotic and my girl is sooooo grateful....I just can't thank you enough!!! Bless you!!

  • What a good dog!

  • I think that is what my dog needs she smell soooo bad we have her out side for that reason we have to take her to the bet cuz i will neve stick my finger there

  • Such a good dog. He should give it a click and a treat after doing that so that the little doggie knows there is a reward for being good. We just love our dogs.

  • Such a good dog. Calm temperament.

  • @ervanir3- he said give a spoon per 40lbs 2x a day. So if your dogs is 20 lbs give 1 spoon, 60lbs 2.5spoons, 80lbs you would give 4 spoons a days, etc....

  • This was truly an informative video. I had a Border Collie who recently passed away at 15 yrs old. She had anal problems for about the last 5 years of her life. Although I knew how to do it myself, my dog wasn't have it. I always had to take her to the vet so that all of the assistants and vet could hold her down. It usually took a min. of 4 people. Is their a sedative or something for dogs that are not as well behaved as the one in the video?

  • Hi Dr. Jones,

You mentioned in your video you give one teaspoon Flaxseed for a 40 lb.dog 2 times a day. I just want to make sure I understand your recommendation, the total for the day would be 2 tsp. Is that correct?

    Please respond. Thanks Kris

  • This video was VERY informative. There are many more on YouTube. I never knew what the dogs fish like rear-end smell was but this was it! Thanks YouTube Ive learned more from this website than in Highschool.

  • Too bad there is so much immaturity out there. Posting this video was a good idea. With the economy so bad some have to do away with things like vet visits. I know that sounds cruel but it is a fact of life. To be able to help relieve your pet of discomfort is a blessing. Your doing a great service to the community and many of us appreciate it.

  • @aura984 and he is a great dr helping people care for their pets. when a pet needs help i dont think they care if their dr is gay. do you not want a gay dr to care for you or your pet? get some mental help.

  • LMAO! The dog isn't even botherd by it at all. WOW calm dog!

  • What a good dog

  • Not once does he mention that the smell is like rotten fish guts....lol or if you get it on your clothes, it's a bitch of a smell o get out. I work at a vet and we do these every day...lol

  • One time i scared my dog and that stuff squirted out all over my friends....now i know what it was. Smells like death.

  • @eam623 I need to do this to my dog, but will take her to Petco tomorrow. i know what you mean about the smell though. Years ago before I knew about this ,another dog I had tied in the back of my truck fell over the side. I put her back in but there was this terrible smell like burnt rubber. Was so gross I couldn't get the smell out of my nose for a long time. Eww.

  • Thank you- it was very helpful, I would prefer to do it on my own than take dog to vet.

  • thankyou!! now my dog will stop trying to chew his bum when we're going for a walk!

  • my two golden retrievers have this problem every month. They eat grass to let me know they are having problems. The vet said they were some what out of position. I give them fiber but I will try the flax. I have a hard time with the smaller dog because it seems to hurt her and I am very gentle - taking my time and not squeezing hard but it takes about five minutes till I can finally get them empty. Will the hot compress cause them to express on their own or losen them up? thanks

  • My dogs would never sit still like that. Anything directed at their pooper and they'd be GONE.

  • @finallygrownup Its a LAB

  • thank u 4 the tip

  • yeah my dog smells GROSS like fish and i just gave her a bath. this is definitely her problemo... she's a butt scooter.

  • My cat does NOT like when I do this. I have a diploma in animal care before I took law & learned how to do this. I just squeeze them from the outside and it comes out...yuck but stops butt scootin boogie

  • That dog must have been given some Benedryl first. Ouch.

  • how is the dog not squirming?

  • @jocw101087 probably premedicated, Im sure.

  • @369thegoose1 dogs do not get medication for this. it actually feels relieving to them. it is a quick procedure, they are not sedated.

I work at a vet office and I can say the rooms smell so bad after this procedure. You do not want to do it at home!

  • thanks for posting, will my dog stop smelling bad after this procedure.

  • I think Ill just take my dog to the vet

  • We have a groomer that does this for $5 if you let her groom your dog or $10 without a grooming... I think I'll let her keep doing it too, looks pretty nasty, My cat though, had to have this done as hers were infected. I was charged $185... maybe because it took three people to hold the cat down. Who would have thought that 5 lb cat would have been that pissed to have that vets 6 inch finger up her bum...

  • I couldn't stop laughing the whole time I watched this... but thanks for posting. My sister worked at a vet's office and would talk about doing this while we all ate dinner.

  • helpful!!

  • My dogs freak when I pull into the parking lot of my vets office for their shots & teeth cleaning; which I try to do at same time ! Since they are short haired they do not go to a groomer. Heck yes I will do this at home to avoid causing undo stress to my baby; because I would be heading to my vets more than I wanted to just to do this procedure I could make my husband do at home. Thank you for the video help!

  • hey i have a question. i have a bulldog ( one year old) female and shes always groomed in petsmart after the grooming i notice that her but is bleeding but i just ignore it coz i thought that was temporary and after several weeks it still doing it. we visit a vet already but they suggest that if the medicine dint work they going to cut something . my question is do you think the cause of this problem is the groomer doing it wrong?

  • I would like to thank you for this tutorioal. Bless your heart! It may be gross but because the economy is what it is some people cat afford the vet and personally if my dog is suffering I have to help him! I appreciate any do it your self info. Keep it up Doc you are an Angel!!

  • Thanks a lot for this video, it is after 1 in the morning here and my dog was scooting and seemed very annoyed, so right after seeing you, I took my glove and carefully did exactly what you said. I've tried it before and had issues, but this time it was very easy thanks to you. My dog thanks you. About the flax. Would that 2x a day be for a limited time only, or on the regular? And is it good for cats too, and at what dosage? Thanks again.

  • Ewww..... But Cute Vet!

  • If your dog suffers alot speak to your local vets about bilateral anal gland resections. Interesting to watch aswell

  • Very helpful for us, we have a 5 month Springer Spaniel who has had a gland problem since she was ten weeks old. Believe me if I had to take her to the vet to do this it would get expensive, as we have 2 other dogs ( lucky for us, they don't have any of that stank butt going on! ) Thank you.

  • Thank you so much! !

  • man, you have the calling.congratulations

  • thanks man, my chocolate lab sometimes 'expresses' them himself, but fuck, its 1am and he just 'expressed' a tiny bit of the smelliest stuff on my fucking bed. it stinks so bad. he usually does this like every now and then not often and it usually smells, but its gross on my bed.

    i hope there isn't a problem?

  • @mikecuzins What wasn't mentioned in this video is that normally dogs will express their anal glands when they defecate, & sometimes they will do this when they are excited or even relaxed. It stinks, but it's normal. There's no need to express your dog's anal glands unless there's a reason why they aren't expressing on their own e.g., diarrhea b/c firm normal stools express the glands as they pass out of the anus.

  • Thanks! Saved me $2200!!

  • No disrespect intended........

  • why do you people always use a black dog?

  • Thanks Doc. for the helpful information and demonstration.

  • Loved it!.

  • Loved it!

  • Thank you!! :)

  • Very nice job.

  • Thank you for the clear and easy to understand video! It was very informative.

  • Dr. Jones,

I had a long, detailed comment typed out on my iPhone, but when I tried to send, I got a message that YouTube was unavailable. So, short version is that I have a black Lab with anal distress this week, watched your video, followed your instructions and had great success! We are both resting comfortably now. Thanks, from a guy who already spends about $5,000 annualy on five (current count) rescued animals. This saved one of the many visits to the animal hospital this year!

  • good information but i'll go no glove on this one

  • @abi999 Ask your vet if you qualify

  • ok.... I am NOT doing that to my dog i love him but not that much

  • yikes!

  • My Name was created for chat with son when he was in Iraq.

U_pleH_doG <---Read Backward hee now, When she feels the relief I think she will bond so much closer and trust me more to help her when she needs it. If you can't due it for your dog, you couldn't come through for a family member.

  • Thank You very much.

  • I tried to squeeze on just the outside like another vet did in another video, & nothing, but I could feel a bit of a bulge...will have to try again with a glove & lubrication.

  • my dog bites me when i try, its the weekend and i know he has to get this done, i feel bad that he has to wait until monday=/

  • can you do this to a puppy?

  • Thanks Dr. Jones! Knowledge is power when you share it!!!

  • My chihuahua thanks u! she was so miserable before I tried this with a warm tea bag compress of chamomile tea for 5 min first then a tiny pinky finger and ten min later she was her happy self again and wanted to eat and play and run which she wasnt doing befiore for awhile! thank you!

  • Great clip, thanks.

  • hey thanks doc...

  • There's no dignity on the internet - but I suspect the dog knows this already...! This video was very helpful. I has able to sort out my Staffie and make him much more comfortable, thanks to the clip. The vet is REALLY cute too!

  • What should normal fluid look like? I've seen different videos where the consistency fluctuates. Some seems to be a thin green colored liquid, while others are much thicker and darker. Does it vary from dog to dog? Or is the thicker darker stuff the result of a problem?

  • @hughiehound:

I've watched a few other videos.

A healthy example is quite fluid and looks amber-tinted.

An infected example is quite thick (like paste) and is dark in colour.

  • Trommer21: How is the dog clearly sedated?! I have a 60 lb Golden who holds still for me while I express her glands.

It's not so easy to rupture a gland as you think and the vet does a good job of instructing to "GENTLY squeeze."

I doubt one would go looking for vids on anal gland expression unless they were familiar with the issue. It's not plausible to assume that one will stumble on this video and go, "Hm, I should stick my finger up my dog's rear and squeeze around for the fun of it!"

  • Good boy, Lewis. :)

  • i have a 7 lb yorkie , do i express the same way? seems like that would hurt her? thank you for your video , was very imformative

  • GOOD DOGGY ! (:

  • You're the man, thanks!

  • Oh my gosh, I have never seen anyone with such enthusiasm while expressing the dog's rear end glands!

It's very informative! Love the doc's mannerism though! I'll work on that enthusiasm while trying to do this disgusting thingy...

  • Oh my gosh! Lovevthis, thank you!!!!!

  • better leave this to the professional...if u make a mistake the dog may not like it...but this dog is really impressive bec he is a very well behave dog=)

  • That is the best behaved dog. Not to be rude to Vets or Vet students, but I feel that if someone is capable of performing this at home then you should. My vet told me to give my dog green beans, which does not help at all! But, as a nurse I feel very comfortable with this action and I feel telling people not to perform this at home is like telling my patients to not give themselves an enema at home if it is needed. Both are safe as long as proper instructions are given before hand. Great Video!

  • That was very informative. That was a very good dog.

  • sweet dog - I have two golden retrievers who seem to have a regular problem with their glands - I have no problem expressing them - I do it very gently but it seems they may be clogged - the hot compress will unclog the glands? Then you express or does the compress express? I do it because I care about my girls - it seems they always bite their butt at night and I don't want them in their crate biting their but all night - I want them to sleep with out pain or irritation - so don't criticize.

  • that is a well behaved dog!!

  • thanks is right--I was doing it wrong and now I can save $ unlike other vets who want the money and have no ethics--thanks tons

  • If you cared about your dog, you wouldn't be doing it at all. Veterinary students don't go through 5+ years of training just for some ill-educated owner to go out there and try doing it themselves. Sorry to be rude, but owners who think that their vets are ripping them off are massively deluded.
