I see alot of comments about salvage costs, and am quite shocked, I'm a commercial diver in Cornwall UK and we get called out about 3 times a year to recover all kinds of boats. we would have got this back afloat within 6hrs with air bags and winching using an anchored vessel, my boss would have charged about £1,200 which I guess is less than $3,000, Some people prefer to let it wreck for the insurance. They get more than they would selling it....sad but true.
There are a lot of comments that could be made about something like this, but being the owner of my own sailboat I am far to sensitive to say them. I'm sure that the owners suffered enough watching their pride and joy slowly go down and have punished themselves enough with all the "woulda, coulda, shouldas" that there is nothing that anyone could add.
It is so sad to see that and it is now happening all over Florida due to the collapse of the economy. People are just cutting them loose and letting the sea take them. A shame.
firefoxsteve, if you worked in salvage you should also know the extreme amounts they charge for a tow. Salvage prices depend on the value of the boat and the amount of danger to it and crew, not the amount of work... and if you don't have insurance and can't afford $20k for a tow, they just leave the ship for this to happen. It's a tough world.
Anchor trick only works if you do it before the first high tide bumps the ship too far up the beach. Gives the crew little time to do the right thing!
Could she not have been kedged off on the tide? My God, what a waste! A dinghy, a good anchor, a winch and some stout line and she probably could have been saved.
Really anyone who owns a Hunter might not want to go spouting off about other boasts being pigs, I mean really that is a classic glass house, pot/kettle thing. Even compared to other cruisers Hunters are pigs. cstall3 let me know if you need crew for the "old sailing pig" vs. hunter race I only ask that I get to crew on the pig. Let's make it an offshore race, something short maybe a few hundred miles and schedule for a little bit of weather just a bit wet and wild. Hunter, *facepalm*
If you start reading thins you CANT stop .Once ther was a little girl named Cecilia. She was a little 7 year old who got strangled and raped by a man =.If you dont post this to 15 other videos you will see CCecilia standing at the end of your bed with a knife and she will kill you
You have to do this by midnight or you will be dead
whats the point in caring its the goverments falt they didnt want to clear it up then thats there falt and why are you havingagow at the guy who made this seriously you guys are oethetic (not you the guy who made this) the people that complain about it jeez
and do you have anything other than "not my boat" to say? you are pathetic. even if it's not your own boat you could still do something about it! you just didn't care! it's simple.
i dont really understand why no one salvaged it before it was destroied theres no reason why you couldent have from what i see so now 1 more beutiful wood boat is gone for ever if your the type of pearson who would just let that boat go what are your other hobbies killing polar bears and baby seals? i hope there was a good reason this boat wasnt saved....
that's excactly what I thought! I just couldn't stand watching such a gorgeous boat going to waste. I would risk my life to save it! it seems to me that rich bastards don't know how to appreciate fine things.
what on earth , the next time you land a ship on "sand" write me , i will fly from Australia and pick her up . too much money , no sailing sense , have you not heard of salvage anchor winching,???,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, that boat was NOT stuck fast
@bigmuso123 I agree! I would even pay the $20,000 to get it freed, maybe another 20k for a new mast and refitting/repairs, then sail off into the sunset on my awesome 40k boat.
You let your boat lie on that shore for a month? You wonder why people do not like blowboaters? Shameful. Silence on how you let this happen in the first place leaves plenty of room for speculation. Not, I confess, all charitable.
How could you let that happen i would have dug it out with a shovel or had it towed out right away i knew in the first clip it was gonna get deeper, that is so horrible at least i know never to let my sailboat go ashore!!! have you ever heard of an anchor!!!!!!!!!!!!
Man! These ship wreak videos sure can make a guy sad!!I hate to see a beautiful boat destroyed. How long it took was the most painful part. All you can do is watch!!!
so your telling me a backhoe couldnt have gotten the sand out of the way which would then put the ship in water.

DOCCAREY - I'd put one of those "old sailing pigs" up against your new Hunter anyday. How do you like the mast braces?

Actually its some what disheartening to see any boat wash up on the beach.

Thank you for sharing the story of this boat and its tragic end. Sorry for the loss of this vessel. The owners must be grieved....
However, the waves and sky behind the wreckage are absolutely beautiful. The video is oddly enjoyable, and - yes - inspiring.

Good to know how this ended.
I wish you had filmed a bit from the inside, was everything removed?
Strange that this ship was not worth the $20.000 to tow away.
stomkijken 4 years ago
It may have been worth that much, but the owners apparently couldn't cough up that kind of money. (without insurance probably)
