@Liddledriver Yes,the Mustang and Griffon engined Spits were fairly well matched,I read a wartime type comparison test somewhere on the net done by the RAF,think the Spit was better at lower levels in a combat situation, speeds were similar, both superb aircraft of course, the report seemed to say it was down to personel preference overall, the 14 with the teardrop and clipped wings looks fantastic,it also sounds like it was designed to kill and win.
fantastic sound, sounds like a real warbird,i love the merlin but theres something almost scary about a griffon spit,it must have terrified the opposition.
I have never heard one flying in front of me, unfortunately the only griffon powered spitfire in New Zealand crashed in 1996. The video certainly does it justice. Roll on easter 2010, Warbirds over Wanaka International Airshow will be the best yet.
The Griffon powered Spitfire you mention which belonged to Sir Tim Wallis was first assembled and then test flown out of Whenupai in 1994. I was lucky enough to be in Greenhithe (right across from Whenupai) the afternoon the test pilot took it up for a spin.
Mate, he was really putting it through its paces - the sound and sight of it was awesome! The power and performance quite incredible!
Yes terrific aircraft,no mistaking what it was designed for,to go kill something! sounds a killer compared to the sweet Merlin engine, wish I had one in the shed to,to think you could pick one up for about a tenner after the war!
FOR THIS IS THAT NEITHER THE MESSERSCHMITT OR FOCKEWULF COULD DO SOMETHING TO PREVENT its inevitable end.

Many think, especially pilots who flew Spits, that "pound for pound" as they say in boxing, iy was probably the greatest
aircraft ever built
-to this day
