Ah, sorry...barely paid attention, you did this in the video. Um...try getting out of your sub-selection back on your editable poly...it was on face select just about the whole time, that could be the problem.
You put your turbosmooth on after the skin modifier. That adds new vertex points with new names so the program doesn't know how to change the skin...so the skin modifier breaks. Pulling it above the turbosmooth won't help you at all. Just turbosmooth, then put on a new skin modifier. That should solve the problem.
