I love the sounds from the Boss CH-1 Super Chorus. Especially the shimmering sounds, and how ProGuitarShopDemos used the song called "welcome home sanitarium" intro/verse from Metallica. I would love to use the chorus pedal to make different sound effects with my other guitar pedal collection.
@78hiwatts or people with nicer rigs have a better ear for tone. People talk up boss a lot but I don't get the hype aside from them being great for somebody just starting out
What I always forget is that A is modulated and B is dry when using in stereo mode... Also, when using in stereo mode, the effects level knob should be set to the maximum (wet). Hooking up this chorus pedal to a DD7 in stereo mode sounds awesome!
@78hiwatts what u are saying is dumb. I agree that people should focus more on the playing rather than the gear, but once u get to a point you start getting better, its good to shape and improve your sound with a nicer gear, and BOSS pedals aren´t always the best. For me they do have the best delays for example but any EHX would kick the average BOSS modulation pedals. Same goes to the distortion. I used to have a BD-2 and loved it, but then i tried a Fulltone OCD and realized what i was missing
I love how noobs think they can buy their way to sounding better. by saying you hate Boss, you might as well say "I'm a noob that likes pretty pedals so that when someone looks at my board they'll think I'm the shit", you're not fooling anyone you hacks
@78hiwatts lol.... so you're saying everybody wwilling to spend more on their effect pedals is a noob? well thats your prerogative... but its ridiculous to say boss are always the "best", and buying a more expensive one is totally for not... i'd have to beg to differ... just listen to a mad proffessor delay, or even overdrive like the honey one. saying they suck is just holding a grude over people who can afford nicer pedals.. (following the same logic you displayed)

@78hiwatts Buy their way to sounding better? You're forgetting the large demographic that experiments with a guitar through all the effects that are optional. Guitarists who consider themselves general Musicians, rather than actual guitarists. Personally I'm more intrested in theory and texture rather than chords or scales.. And I've been playing for many years. So, at this point I make my guitar sound as if it's on the border of being a completely different instrument. I'm far from the only one
i have one of these, just one problem, when i put it in the fx loop of my amp, it has an awful lot of background noise, especially with the high frequencies, HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!!
@Saesangism Fat chance. But there are some great CE-2 clones out there. Check out the Build Your Own Clone chorus pedals. Their pretty good if your handy with a soldering iron. But PGS has some pretty cool chorus pedal demos already, so I would recommend checking those out to see what your EAR likes.
@JJSurmaVoiceImaging love menat work, weird to here a classic 80s tune played on a pedal eview, but hey its chorus so maybe it isnt that weird!!! going to go dig out my men at work viynl now, going to be late for work again lol
hey PGS, just wonderin... does Andy prefer analog effects and ods/distortions or digital effects and ods/distortions... it just seems he shows more analog than digital i find... is it just me??
So nice to see PGS doing a demo of a Boss pedal. I love Boss pedals. Please do more Andy. You did such an excellent job demo-ing this CH-1... I'm sure you can do all the others equal justice. I loved the Rush Subdivisions section. That sounded awesome!
great demo but you left out the pseudo phaser effect achived by maxing the depth and level, rolling the speed all the way off and having the EQ at half way...
that vibrato thing, similar to the big country "bagpipe" sound
For a boss pedal, this thing is pretty cool, b the Ce-1 is freakin rad, though. Boss pedals tend to be a little too brittle for me, but the Ce-1 is much warmer.
I like boss. And @ProGuitarShopDemos is right: look at any famous guitarist's pedal board: more likely than not, there will be 1 or 2 boss pedals on there (they did INVENT the digital delay, have one of the most reliable and most used tuners, and have probably the most recognizable distortion ever: the DS-1). So guys, so what if it's not boutique? They work pretty damn well, and are built like a tank so they're made to last. Everyone has their own opinions, but dont hate just to hate. seriously.
@TeeAreBee Beware, the pedals of those famous guitarist's are all custom moded (e.g. betterbuffers for their made in taiwan pedals) and many of those boss are the old ones, made in Japan. Plus they DIDN'T INVENT the digital delay, they just put it on a pedal format for the first time.
@javiceres Yes, SOME of them are from the japanese era, and yes, SOME of them are modded, but just because a handful of people do it doesnt mean that every guitarist in a signed band does it. Far From it. Most guitarists, from experience, would rather find a product as is that sounds great than go through the effort of buying the pedal and shipping it off to get a mod. go to guitargeek (dot) com 8 of the top 10 rigs have at least 1 boss pedal u can get today (and jimi wasnt around for boss)
Anybody who hates Boss pedals either doesn't understand good sound or is a snob and judges them on their popularity. They haven't sold 10 million units over 30 years by producing junk. Get over yourself!
@toiletfarm THAT'S WHAT I'VE BEEN SAYING! -_- it's the same paradox i see in bands: if someone releases a song the population generally likes, it automatically sucks. I mean, really? People like it for a reason, be it music or pedals, and you cant say all of those people have bad taste, otherwise you look pretentious and ridiculously silly haha
@TeeAreBee and @LFWOL - Using the McD's analogy, they serve a decent product at a fair price, that's why the majority shop there. They didn't become one of the most successful franchises in world history by providing a niche product. You may not feed it to your dog, but the majority would, so to speak. I don't like Slayer, but I realize I'm in the minority so I can't say they suck because that's just my opinion, not the majority. You don't have to like Boss, but pros use them with reason.
@mattallurgist The CE-5 and CH-1 have two completely different sounds: the CH-1 is alot harsher than the CE-5, for lack of a better way to put it, and from experience is more solo-friendly than the CE-5, which appears much better suited for clean chord work or arpeggios. Also, you have more control over the EQ of the CE-5, which offers both high and low filter controls, unlike the CH-1's basic EQ. I prefer the CH-1, but that's preference: they're just two different sounding chorus pedals
Jerry Cantrell has a CH-1 (and CE-5) on his pedal board. Funny how Boss pedals can work so well for a great guitar player in a great band. People should focus on writing great songs and delivering great performances rather than finding a pedal that sounds .012% better than a Boss.
Nice demo. Then again, Andy can plug into a tin can & make it sound like gold. To my understanding, I've been told my guitar sales reps that when buying Boss, the best ones to get are the Japanese ones
One question guys when the different titles for the settings come onscreen, i.e. "Shimmer" or "vibrato" are these your own designations or are these presets from the manual? thanks for your time!
That is Rush's "Subdivisions" at 4:35 folks. Great song and great picking PGS. You inspire me to work on many songs I've heard you play = Thanks! Most recently, "Killing Yourself to Live" by Black Sabbath. Always have liked The Pretenders song in the intro too :o)
I love you guys. Thanks for "keeping it real". Yea, I got some serious high end pedals. I've also got inexpensive Boss pedals that I'm never going to sell. I've got a Danelectro Psycho flange that I love. Is it a clean as some others? NO,but it has the sound I'm looking for.... bottom line... if you can get the sound you need stick with that what ever it cost.
i allways ask myselff will it do a tube amp any justice or does it kills the great sound from ur amp ? im not a wizzkid but i like to keep the great sound of a tube amp
I think it's great PGS takes this classic pedal out for a demo. And it sounds great too, I like the transparency, your original signal remains audible even at higher intensity settings. I Guess there's a reason why pros like Satriani and Zakk Wylde are using it...
So, all of you guys bashing Boss pedals.......I am willing to put money down if they showed a picture of a Keeley or other similar hi-end pedal while playing these clips, you would be singing its praises.
Take a look at almost every single famous professional guitarist's rig, and somewhere along the line, you'll likely see a Boss pedal. They make good stuff for working players.
Glad to see and hear some quality lower priced pedal demo's. It really shows that PGS cares for players at both ends of the dollar spectrum. Players can then make their on choice, and get the best pedal for their buck, Great demo keep it up.
I Think Boss have done some great stuff, and some complete crap. I like the NS-2, TR-2 and CE-2. The DD-7 isnt bad as a first delay pedal, but has a ton of useless modes
I have this pedal, bought and returned the MXR Micro Chorus becuase is was too much chorus effect for me. I love MXR effects but with no "depth" control it was too much! The Boss CH-1 suited my needs better - subtle chorus.
BOSS actually delivers some pretty nice sounding clean-effects for affordable prices, I don't own any particular BOSS pedal but have always been open-minded about them. As long as everyone stays away from their OD and DS pedals...
Nive to see that you guys care to demo also these basic pedals along those cool boutiques. I just can't see why people say that don't by Boss etc. some of them are good soundin', reliable and most important affordable.
The truth is this pedal actually sounds good, yes its a boss who cares! It sounds like a chorus should! I think most people would be hard pressed to actually tell the difference between this and some 300 hundred dollar chorus for many of the sounds anyway. It is what it is
it sounds nice. i don't really like chorus so much and when i do i like analog ones more because it tends to sound less cheesy to me, but this actually sounds great. i've come to the conclusion you can probably make any piece of shit sound good. people are trashing boss, but you could take this audio and throw it over some boutique pedal video and people would say it sounded amazing;
@ProGuitarShopDemos Of course there is no wrong or right way, it depends on what you are going for. Typically though to get the most pronounced signal alteration out of any modulation effect it is best to place it after the distorted sound in the signal chain, and if one is using the drive on the amp then I would place the modulation effect in the effects loop so as not to diminish the modulation effect. This is pretty rudimentary.
@chuck9000 you're acting like you know you can do it another way but your way is still the better way. countless people use non-conventional pedal order because it produces a sound they want.
i dont know why you'd try to argue something like that.
@ArthurStephenHicks Well the whole point of using an effect is to make a noticable difference in your sound, so in general it would make sense to place the pedal in the signal chain where it would have the optimal effect. I just wonder what would be the purpose of using something if you can't hardly tell it's there. Seriously though, put a delay pedal in front of a loud fuzz pedzal and tell me that is useful for anything but making a guitar sounds shitty!
@MusicAndDaren - Boss didn't pay anything. We did this video to mix things up a little bit, and because we carry and like Boss products. They make many fine, indestructible effects for the working person. And if you look at the pedalboards of the pros, almost all of them have at least one or two Boss pedals.
Modulation effects either need to be cheap (Boss) or do something spectacular. Otherwise, there's no reason to spend more than $80 on something that you won't hear the $ difference in the mix, both recording or live.
Proguitarshop, I think you guys should do a viewer vote review/demo, where you guys pick 4 to 5 pedals a week, and we the viewers vote on which one should be demoed the next week. Thumbs up if you think this is a good idea.
Hells yeah. I'm keen to see a demo of the EHX Freeze.
anyway, Boss I have to admit are pretty terrible. Sure they're affordable and easy to come by, but does seem to me with most of their pedals, they get 20% right and 80% wrong. The loopers are great but the preset tracks aren't needed, saving is a pain. Boss OD is good for practicality, but then you can get a Big Muff for £60. DD7 delay gives great depth, but that's beaten by a Carbon Copy for the same price. Just me maybe
I think it's a great general all-purpose chorus pedal. So is the CE-5 pedal that Boss makes, which I like better than this one. Sure there's better but for the money, I think Boss makes good chorus and delay pedals. Never liked their dirt boxes though.
Can someone tell me what song did Andy play in 1:40 to 2:30?. I would be really thankful

I Guess there's a reason why pros like Satriani and Zakk Wylde are using it...
mennoosmusic 1 year ago
So, all of you guys bashing Boss pedals.......I am willing to put money down if they showed a picture of a Keeley or other similar hi-end pedal while playing these clips, you would be singing its praises.
Take a look at almost every single famous professional guitarist's rig, and somewhere along the line, you'll likely see a Boss pedal. They make good stuff for working players.
giantrobot9000 1 year ago
I'd love to see some kind of split screen so I can also see Andy playing. By the way...awesome job on Rush's Freewill!
dmanes1011 1 year ago
Glad to see and hear some quality lower priced pedal demo's. It really shows that PGS cares for players at both ends of the dollar spectrum. Players can then make their on choice, and get the best pedal for their buck, Great demo keep it up.

I Think Boss have done some great stuff, and some complete crap. I like the NS-2, TR-2 and CE-2. The DD-7 isnt bad as a first delay pedal, but has a ton of useless modes

Love the Men at Work song, Andy. Nicely done.

I have this pedal, bought and returned the MXR Micro Chorus becuase is was too much chorus effect for me. I love MXR effects but with no "depth" control it was too much! The Boss CH-1 suited my needs better - subtle chorus.

can you guys do more demo's of boss modulation pedals? :)

Nothing wrong with (some) good ole Boss pedals, no need to hate

BOSS actually delivers some pretty nice sounding clean-effects for affordable prices, I don't own any particular BOSS pedal but have always been open-minded about them. As long as everyone stays away from their OD and DS pedals...
hezzart 1 year ago
Nive to see that you guys care to demo also these basic pedals along those cool boutiques. I just can't see why people say that don't by Boss etc. some of them are good soundin', reliable and most important affordable.
Keep on 'rockin! (you know in where ;)

Great bit of Rush
ChaosTheory909 1 year ago
The truth is this pedal actually sounds good, yes its a boss who cares! It sounds like a chorus should! I think most people would be hard pressed to actually tell the difference between this and some 300 hundred dollar chorus for many of the sounds anyway. It is what it is

I thought you were going to bust out some Asia - Heat of the Moment there for a second.
I really like the MXR M-134 Chorus, the low-end bypass works well.

sounds like a Cindy Lauper song on a Phil Collins record.
snutstrut 1 year ago 2
it sounds nice. i don't really like chorus so much and when i do i like analog ones more because it tends to sound less cheesy to me, but this actually sounds great. i've come to the conclusion you can probably make any piece of shit sound good. people are trashing boss, but you could take this audio and throw it over some boutique pedal video and people would say it sounded amazing;

I personally prefer the blues driver over the DS-1, meh its just me

Chorus before the OD? It is my understanding that distortion/ overdrive pedals don't like to see a modulated signal. Just my two cents.
ibanezman007 1 year ago
@ibanezman007 If your amp is distorted, that is the same difference. There is no wrong way to place them :)
PGS Crew
ProGuitarShopDemos 1 year ago 14
@ProGuitarShopDemos Of course there is no wrong or right way, it depends on what you are going for. Typically though to get the most pronounced signal alteration out of any modulation effect it is best to place it after the distorted sound in the signal chain, and if one is using the drive on the amp then I would place the modulation effect in the effects loop so as not to diminish the modulation effect. This is pretty rudimentary.
chuck9000 1 year ago
@chuck9000 Like we said, there is no "right" or "best" way to do it.
ProGuitarShopDemos 1 year ago 8
@chuck9000 you're acting like you know you can do it another way but your way is still the better way. countless people use non-conventional pedal order because it produces a sound they want.
i dont know why you'd try to argue something like that.
ArthurStephenHicks 1 year ago
@ArthurStephenHicks Well the whole point of using an effect is to make a noticable difference in your sound, so in general it would make sense to place the pedal in the signal chain where it would have the optimal effect. I just wonder what would be the purpose of using something if you can't hardly tell it's there. Seriously though, put a delay pedal in front of a loud fuzz pedzal and tell me that is useful for anything but making a guitar sounds shitty!
chuck9000 1 year ago
@ibanezman007 Zakk Wylde use chorus before his JCM 800! Not in a Fx loop.

I wonder how much boss payed to get on proguitarshop. Make some better sounding pedals guys
MusicAndDaren 1 year ago
@MusicAndDaren - Boss didn't pay anything. We did this video to mix things up a little bit, and because we carry and like Boss products. They make many fine, indestructible effects for the working person. And if you look at the pedalboards of the pros, almost all of them have at least one or two Boss pedals.

@ProGuitarShopDemos true, I own tree Boss pedals. They're a great value for their price.

@ProGuitarShopDemos thats what i like about you guys. You could have just deleted this comment, but you chose to answer it in a proper way, instead.
I mean, theres no right and wrong in the quest for the holy grail of tone.
And I happen to like this pedal, by the way.

Chorus in front of overdrive? Meh.

@amarr1 Andy has it so that the overdrive comes first. There is no chorus in front of overdrive here.

maybe they already demo every guitar pedal in existence, just joking guys, excelent job love your channel ^^
cesarguitar1111 1 year ago 2
Modulation effects either need to be cheap (Boss) or do something spectacular. Otherwise, there's no reason to spend more than $80 on something that you won't hear the $ difference in the mix, both recording or live.
CrimsonEdge38 1 year ago

DeadWhiteButterflies 1 year ago
I think it's a great general all-purpose chorus pedal. So is the CE-5 pedal that Boss makes, which I like better than this one. Sure there's better but for the money, I think Boss makes good chorus and delay pedals. Never liked their dirt boxes though.
That said, I'm more of a Small Clone guy.
