  • good times, games were a challenge those days

  • I love how this game fucked up with how strong terminators are. A terminator should be able to destroy a dozen genestealers in close combat alone. His power fist or lightning claws would annihilate them easily. One genestealer killing a terminator who is facing it...psshhh

  • @Artavios I think it was pretty accurate with the original board game (the bigger CC-weapons actually upped your chances of survival a great deal, however there was always the random death because of "a bad roll").Of course both versions of Space Hulk (tt and videogame) aren't comparable with the rules from actual 40k.

  • This game is fuckhard.

  • Haha, this game is is so awesome.

  • I always loved the uncomfortable pauses in the intro screens and audio, still makes me chuckle

  • That gene straight his brains bitch slapped out lol

  • i had this game on amiga500 was amazing

  • That's why you make helmets stronger and not come off so easily...

  • ohhh how i miss this game !

  • Man I'd love to see a Doom style Space Hulk.

  • genestealer head = rape face D:

  • I remember that at some point in the intro (maybe by just staying a few minutes in the main menu without pressing any key) you could hear a really cool and tough metal song (lyrics included). Something like "Get out my way...".

I was so addicted to that song back in 1993.

Thanks for the video, btw, got me tears :-)

  • @hyder81 That was D-Rok, the song is called "get out of my way". However the Space Hulk track is just samples.

  • @InsertDisk2 brian may from queen was guest guitarist on it as well :)

  • Back when Dark Angels were cool.

  • Power armor(terminator) and superhuman training to become space marine goes LOL in this video.

  • guys i need help please, im playing space hulk off of dosbox on xp and i am duing mission 3. so i destroy the statue an then genestealers come pooring in. i kept killing the hord of genestealers but they just keep coming and coming! i fought the hord for an hour or so and died. is the hord eventualy going to stop or do i have to do something?

  • @josephddd117 Survive. Hurry to the exit, there is no end to them. Welcome to Space Hulk.

  • is that a pixle in your pocket or are you just happy to see me

  • Damn that roll playing game was fun ti play!

  • how do i load this

  • damn so much memories

  • Doom, imma let you finish but this is the best early 90s shotter of all time all tiiiime.

  • When I see old videos like this it confirms it for me, old games are not just better because of fond memories and nostalgia, they really are better. Modern games see to be just a bunch of button mashing. Heaven forbid you have to think to play a game.

  • 0:38 There's canned food for dinner today...

  • @ 1:18 om nom nom nom

  • Now THAT'S what I call an intro!

  • Kill the mutant burn the heretic purge the unclean

  • classic DOS games.... so many memories

  • wow... that was fucking cool !

  • LOL really poor voice acting...

  • Ok now, honestly. Who managed to beat the whole game? :)

  • @mcz1945 Indeed! I was looking for a strategy guide, but didn't find any.

  • Wish they'd kept the Bolter sound for DoW...

  • Day turns bad for one terminator at 1:18

  • Awesome stuff, I'd love to play this someday. Better yet, a space hulk is going to be featured in the expansion for Dawn of War II, called Chaos Rising.

  • yea but it aint that scary as hell space hulk sadly.

  • Sgt. with Power Sword. F T W

  • This was the most awesome game intro my 10-year old self had seen. I wish they had used the bolter sound for Dawn of War and all other WH40K-games.

  • Well InsertDisk2 I hope they make A 3rd Space Hulk Game for PS3,XBOX360, PC. That Would be awsome.

  • That would be amazing, though I think that upcoming "WH40K: Space Marine" is all we are ever going to get.

Then again, Republic Commando and the like were pretty good games... maybe we will see another Space Hulk game someday. For now, Alien Assault from Teardown will be the closest thing to a proper conversion.

  • Would anyone happen to know where i could find this game still? Or Space Hulk 2:Vengeance of the blood angels for Pc download? Thank you for your help to anyone who knows.

  • Try Abandonia for Space Hulk 1 (that one is kinda rare, and you want the floppy version - the CD Rom Version is kinda crappy with all the extra stuff tacked on).

Vengeance of the Blood Angels is easiely obtainable via Ebay and the likes.

  • @TheOblivionCrew ebay is your friend as you WILL need the manual!!!

  • whoah i guess genestealers can tear through termie armor, thought that stuff was nigh on indestructible

  • If you play the tabletop game and know Genestealers, they have rending claws, which means they have a 1/6 chance of ignoring armor.

  • oh yeah, I LOVE genestealers!

  • Genestealers have rending claws which means they can rip almost anything apart.

  • Tyranids can evolve so fast that the genestealer represents trillions upon trillions of years of refining. One such refinement is claws with edges composed of very very tiny molecules, after which it's simply a matter of what's more dense, ceramite plates or genestealer claws. Steel is strong but diamond can cut it on account of the density.

  • was thinking that... way workshop always change the bloody rulebooks I dont know how it goes anymore. I got sick of it and stopped playing the tabletop stuff at 14-15 cos even then I could see they do it to sell new rulebooks and army pieces... not to mention any other tabletop wargaming brands cost a fraction of their price (predominantly its moulded plastic ffs)and "white metal" & high quality were just excuses

  • @leedsm18 Grab a used Space Hulk of Ebay for around 30-40 Euros. Or, just grab the cardboard pieces and either use standins or buy some old second hand models. With a bit of luck you can get everything you need for olden Space Hulk dirt cheap (especially compared with GWs modern minis and price range). Rules and scenarios float the net freely.

  • @leedsm18 Actually there is a very good reason to put out new editions of rulebooks for any game system. Over time players will Find obscure ways around rules, or rules will become commonly misinterpreted or abused.....so new editions are put out in order to re-balance the game. It's about the same as "New patches" on an MMO. Yes, it is a way to make more money.....but It's primarily a Vehicle for the almighty Nerf-bat.

  • @EtherPilot I hear you but with all the rule changes since I played back when it was move, shoot... next player (Im talking early 1990s), its just gotten way too complicated and the more rules you create the more scope for stretching them or playing with the numbers so you can legitimately create a super unit with tons of perks and add ons which can rape a whole army on its own (chaos in 40k)

  • the video game isn't very intuitive you just get a patchy intro and then it's sorta like "right off you go then,go kill something"... Still an awesome game though :D

  • The intro sums up the game quite nicely.

Oh, and back then you got manuals with your games that you actually had to read to get going in the game. And it had a tutorial campaign, so if you spent some time getting into Space Hulk you had no trouble getting along whatsoever (not counting the Genestealer-infestation, they were a pain in the behind ;))

  • Yeah when I first played it I didn't bother with the manual I just lept into it and excpected some sort of in-game tutorial

  • I played this game when I was a kid, and have been trying to remember what it was called for YEARS, finally I have found it mwahahahaha!

  • "May the techpreist bestow your men with weapons of destruction". That was a cool game. ★★★★★

    Katalyzt

  • Hopefully, when I retire, .i'll have 20 years to play all these old games I still own again!!!

  • Be sure to save a copy of the old trainer-file for this... Space Hulk is one unforgiving bastard of a game and some missions are only possible to beat if you play like the god-emperor himself. When you are retired, you might get a heart attack (of RAGE) from this one... don't wait too long ;)

  • wow, that brings back memories!!

I thought I was the shit back then with my 486 DX2 (33MGz), soundblaster card and 17 inch VGA monitor!!! damn I feel old now.

  • That's nothing, I thought I was the shit when I got a Spectrum with a floppy disc drive!

How I lorded my quick loading times over those tape using peasants.

  • In the name of the emporer!!!!

  • Cleanse! Purge! KILL!

  • You got to love that sweet old animation :D

  • It seems like older games are more origanal and innovative lol

  • I remember when I was a kid thinking this was the most awesome intro ever. Now "THE DARK ANGEL CHAPTER!" in Nerd voice just makes me laugh.

  • This may sound silly, but what makes you laugh in that?

I wouldn't know it is Dark Angel Chapter banner, if they wouldn't tell me. Especially while you take command of Deathwing Company, which power armours are bone-white (instead of dark green, that is the colour of Dark Angels).

  • LOL thinks he means the sound quality not what it says, sounds well rushed like they where tryna keep file size as small as possible lol

  • Yah, it's not that it's the Dark Angels Chapter thats funny, it's that apparently Teminators are voiced by the same people who talk trash on xbox live games.

  • my father played this game

  • i like that minigun sound xD

  • LOL

    "THA DARK ANGEL CHAPTER!"

  • lol yes he sounds very badass!

  • I laughed so hard at THE DARK ANGEL CHAPTER! Haven't played this one, but Vengeance of the Blood Angels was pretty awesome.

  • Great game for it's time. I'm surprised no-one's re-made it. I remember it scaring the crap out of me and my mates.

  • This was one of the only computer games that actually gave me an adrenalin rush when playing it - WTF! Phenomenal.

There is a new Warhammer 40k that is due the be released this year where the Tyrannids/Genestealers make a reappearance.

  • It was remade a long time ago, for playstation one and pc. It was titled Space Hulk: Vengeance of the Blood Angels. But if you meant a more modern remake, I think games workshop is trying to bury space hulk (and all fluff concerning genestealer cults) completely.

  • Why do you think they try to do it? Could be a great survival horror imo.

  • It could be, but that is the problem with Space Hulk.

Who exactly is trying to survive? The Genestealers who are being killed, or the marines who have been dispatched to destroy?

  • Terminators, I think.

The Genestealers are being killed in hundreds, but they do not care. They may sacrifice, say... four thousands of their warriors. If Terminators would try to do the same thing, then forty chapters would be out of them.

I'm always wondering anyway, how can Space Marines protect the Imperium, that includes hundreds of star systems, if there is only one milion of them...

  • It'll be because Space Marines are absolutely incredible. Anyway Space Marines are an elite force, for protection there are Planetary Defence Forces and then the Imperial Guard, who don't forget, number around a trillion or something ridiculous like that.

I know the Genestealers are merely extensions of the hive mind, and wouldnt really feel fear, or the need to flee, but don't forget, the terminators dont have survival as their primary objectve- they were sent there to kill, fully aware.

  • Even most elite soldiers suffer casualties. As far as I know, Space Marines take part in many conflicts every day. Warhammer 40k universe is but a fiction, yet if we wanted to be realistic, a single chapter, after one war, would be decimated and - what is more important - unable to reinforce immediately. The selection of SM is hard, and not everyone may become one of them.

  • During "Space Hulk" only, about 20-30 Terminators are killed. Let's say, that there are two or three other hulks, and it will result in Terminator "supply" running out.

Genestealers surely don't have such problems.

Another thing - it is vital in survival horrors, that it is the player who should be afraid. Anyone, who played this game, surely felt a need to survive, he felt like being endangered all the time, with Genestealers incoming from everywhere.

  • I know that the Genestealers don't have to worry about their numbers, but the Terminators don't fear for their lives, or else they wouldn't board in the first place: The only thing they are "worried" about is not being able to finish the mission, which defears the fear of the game, as your purpose is to kill, fully aware of why you are there, not to escape.

  • I'm sure Genesivare means the "Player" when he plays the original board game. You have to worry about your units as their actually pretty flimsy in close combat, and the advantage is on the Genestealers that surround the "Space Marine Player".

When I first played this, I felt for every guy I lost. 1 less guy to Overwatch a hallway.

    Damn!

  • The good old Space Hulk game.=)

  • Yeah. The hide away in ships, and space hulks. Infiltrate enemy systems, impregnate humans and mindcontrol who they can, so that just prior to the main Tyranid invasion, the sleeper cells can rise up and sabotage what they can.

  • ea old logo looked cool

  • The genestealer at 1:17 must have rolled a 6 to wound. Lucky Bastard.

  • Hehe, yeah... in SpaceHulk old 4-arms were pretty killy. (and I am pretty sure the CPU cheated - I actually died ON THE FRIGGIN' TRAINING MISSIONs ;D)

  • just mash the mouse button, you usually kill then and prevent any cheating..then again, those nids always have another trick up their sleave

  • Tell that to the four battle brothers with "non-button mashy" A.I.

Also, mashing increases the possibility of jamming = jamming increases the possibility of horrible death by rending claws.

  • only if you button mash without stopping every 5 seconds. if you mash the fire button the instant you see it comming, it usually dies. plus if you stop for a split second after every 5 bullets, it lowers it. Also, if the Battle Brothers don't rapid fire their guns, who the hell taught them how to shoot?

  • Fucking AWESOME! :D

  • ^^ nice

  • This movie > dawn of war/ 2 intro clip.

  • I wouldn't say the intro..

But defiantly the DoW2 game play >:[

  • i wish this wasremade on D.S.

  • I remember this game... the space marines died WAY to fast though.

  • thanks for the post this brought back an old memory

  • To the left... OVERWATCH!

  • I can not tell a lie...my chracter in Too Human looks as much like a Dark Angel in Terminator armor as possible.

  • so the warhammer franchise as existed long before i was born.

    did't know that ^_^

  • Warhammer since '83, 40K since '87. And for me, these earlier versions (4th and 5th for Warhammer, Rogue Trader and 2nd Edition for 40K) will always be the best. Screw Assault on Black Reach.

  • actually.. assault on black reach has helped GW alot. they are saying there getting more customers now :D

which is good, becuase i've noticed a decline in players recently..

  • A lot things you don`t know are true indeed, young brother. Thou shall learn

  • thanks,brother,

may the emperor's strenght be with you

  • thanks,brother

may the emperor's strenght be with you

  • Windows Vista users and all its brethren

    Have no fear!

I found a way to play this game on vista or XP

Use Dosbox V0.60 or higher and read the instruction to play it

I dont lie believe me XD

  • "Ezekial, behind you!"

  • That was in "Venegance of the Blood Angels".

  • when I was a kid my father played this game...

  • wow! :D a wall of text crits you for 9999

  • Well, if I could, I would disable the char-count-limit, at least on my own videos - obviously sometimes people have more to say than fits in 500 chars.

  • it wouldn't even necicarily be exclusively on a space hulk, much less be always against nids, there are tons of things you can have to fight and have bosses of, but I think Contra works well for pacing, but aside from that it would more resemble Metal Slug due to the FAR superior hand to hand system, where you could actually kill your target in melee, and even come into contact with enemies to the point of pushing without instantly dying (unless they were tank tracks or whatnot)

  • never said it would even be space hulk, maybe just called "Terminator" or something like that or even just "Space Marine" and go with a progression system so you can start out as a scout and go on to full fledged marine, and then chose Assault, or Devastator or stick as Tactical, eventually becoming a member of the first company and have access to Terminator armour, or just stick with the standard Power armour, and so forth. maybe even unlockable Grey Knights and Dreadnoughts, tons of potential.

  • Lotsa good ideas you have mate... you should present that in one of the bigger 40K communities, there might be people able to transform your ideas into a game.

  • I never said they would necicarily use Terminators, in fact, I was thinking exactly that, using Scout Marines instead, their mobility fits the pacing better, I even once played a sidescroller where the main character resembled a late 2nd/early 3rd edition Scout ultramarine (right down to the headset and blue armour plating with White flak/cloth underneith) and it was quite fun.

one could always have the various other Marine types as unlockables, with the Terminator like a perminant Vehicle.

  • IE, scouts being the fast class but can't take much hits, Terminators being slow but able to really take (and dish out) alot of punishment, and the normal Marines being the all rounders.

there is no shortage of nasties to have as contra style bosses that take up most of the screen, a disclaimer at the begining to say "liberties have been taken with gameplay to allow you to take these things down, in actual 40k the kind of character you are playing as would be killed in a blink of an eye"

  • point is, yes in this particular game you could take down a Trigon with a Bolter or whatnot. but only cause of the "Rule of Cool" it's okay to mess with that sort of stuff so long as you make it quite clear that this is a completely over the top take on things and not indicative of the way things are in 40k in any way. just a fun ride of a game not to be taken seriously.

  • shame the intro where they are shooting those genestealers would make a better sidescroller than the actual game's so called first person shooter. I mean if they had made it a sidescroller with that kind of animation, selectable characters and multiplayer. it would be WAY ahead of it's time and would even be able to compete with the likes of Contra 4 if it were made today and ported on the DS if it's pace was increased (those genestealers seemed to move way too slow.).

  • Well... first of all, this is a boardgame conversion, there were limitations in what they could do. Sidescroller isn't exactly what comes to my mind if I think Space Hulk - Jagged Alliance or X-Com on the other hand, does.

Termies are slow and cumbersome (not counting deep strike) therefore, not really awesome sidescroller material (think human-size Battlemech and you get the idea).

The perspective isn't exactly Ego-Shooter, more like classic Computer Dungeon Romp, and fits IMO.

  • I do have to agree, I would have prefered a view much like Jagged Alliance, X-Com, or even Syndicate - then again, the way the game is now, it awesomely transports the atmosphere of the Space Hulk boardgame (especially when playing on a time-limit).

Regarding Stealer-speed, well... it's dark, and narrow corridors (Nid-players help me on this, can Stealers see in the dark?) and you got an extra pair of arms with giant talons on 'em... of course you move slow.

  • If the Nids weren't breaking out of a wall, you bet the termies would have had much more trouble - stealers are deadly (just check the gameplay vids, close combat with a stealer, you might win once, you might make it a second time, but on the thrid go you are dead in most of the cases!)

If I wanted to make a sidescroller based on a olden GW-game, I'd pick Advanced Space Crusade - that one has Scout Marines, and is in general more shooty and classic sidescroller-fare. SH is all about tactics.

  • my friend is absolutely obsessed with anything warhammer 40,000. So yeah InsertDisk2 is right in respects to the color of the terminator armor being all white and black and whatnot cuz thats what mister pewter figure painter has told me as well..can't wait for dawn of war 2 though! I used to watch this dos video over and over again as a kid playing space hulk (never got very far in it cuz its a HARD game) but it made me super fascinated with the Terminator armor thats just badass...FOREVER!!!!

  • DoW2 looks very promising, though I think the very realistic style of Orkz and Space Marines as seen in the trailers doesn't exactly look as much as 40K does in the real world and than it did in DoW, which was basically my models animated.

There is a old trainer for Space Hulk floating around the net, if you feel like reliving Space Hulk and actually finishing it - drop me a line.

  • I've downloaded Space Hulk on my older computer, capable of launching this game through DOS. Yet I can't start it. Apparently, the program does not "see" my mouse, because every time, when I try to launch SH, it claims that there is "no mouse attached".

    How can I fix it?

  • if you have a fast computer, try downloading the dosbox dos machine emulator. It's free, and supports just about everything. Just google dosbox.

  • Deathwing company - is that the part of Dark Angels chapter, which consists of Terminators?

  • "The 1st Company is known as the DW, veterans who only take to the field of battle in bone-white Terminator Armour. This armour was originally black, but was repainted white to honour the valour of a group of 30 Terminators, who single-handedly halted a Genestealer invasion of Plain's World, one of the Dark Angels main recruiting worlds. The DW is unique in that it has enough of the rare and precious Terminator suits to equip the entire company, in excess of 100 complete sets of armour."

  • This game is made of SOO much win!!

  • It sounds like the narrator says 'Dork Angels' chapter.

Hahaha. Watch teenagers who play Dark Angels downvote this post.

  • One of my all time fav games. I was lucky enough to be one of the first people in the country to play warhammer 40k in the US. My friends family moved to England, and when they moved back he came home with these awesome looking lead miniatures he called "space marines" and "genestealers" I still remember how excited I was to get my first mail order of models, shipped all the way from the UK. Good times.

  • wow.. i first played this game when i was 4 yrs old.. this game was so awesome! thx for posting :)

  • how cool would a remake be?

  • well I've seen a few Warhammer Games on this and I have Fire Warrior but I think GWI should make a new game like Gears But from the point of view of a Space Marine or Imperial Guard against Orks or another Race with the tech on 360 or up to date PC's a new game would be a good idea :D

  • Well, playing a single guardsman (or 2-3 for that matter) would be hilarious... you'd be dead faster than you could say "for the emperor". Maybe using the same idea as in Viking, leading mass-battles with the quick-dying bunch.

Or they finally get that "Agents of Death" idea going, full with sneaking and stealth-kill action.

Honestly, I'd wish they would just do a nice turnbased game that does the tabletop at least some justice.

  • hmmmm a trun based game would be pretty cool ever played Advance Wars? if they made something like that I would get it in a heart beat. or maybe a game like Dynasty Warriors mowing orks down with a chansword but again it would be fun for five minutes before boredom sets in. :)

  • Well, you could check out Rites of War, Final Liberation, some N-Gage-title (name escapes me at the moment) and Squad Command.

But these are all very limited in what they try to do, and actually accomplish (though, better than nothing).

40K Dynasty Warriors sounds awesome, I'd buy it ~ gotta love DW!

  • CLEANSE THE XENO SCUM!

  • At least in this game, that's far more easier said than done... this one is really tough.

  • I definately agree. That would be stellar.

  • Google "dosbox" or "vdm sound". One of them worked for me.

  • Somebody tell me, how to launch this game on a computer with Windows '98. I've downloaded it from abandonware site, but it does not work - I tried to launch it through MS-DOS, but the effect is the black screen soon after activating the game and none action of the computer.

  • So, uhm... how many Deathwing squads fighting off 'nids in a enclosed corridor have you pixeld lately?

I just think kids like you with all their Xboxes and Playstations shouldn't stroll around YouTube-entries that are about real games from a time when gaming actually was more than calling other players "FAGS" online and getting sniped by campers in mediocre beta multiplayer spinoffs of popular games.

  • amen to that... fuck all the kids who don't understand retro value.

  • lol they dont travel in space hulks do they?

thought a space hulk was a abandond vessel of some sort?

  • Genestealers did, they are somewhat the spearhead to the hivefleets... as these are actually the creatures first encountered on the moons of Ymgarl, and not the vast "bug-armies" of 40K 3rd and 4th edition.

The Deathwing just cleanse these infested vessels from the alien threat.

  • Wow those graphics aren't as good as I remembered them, but this scene is still badass as ever, especially the Termie with the assault cannon laying waste to those 'stealers. A classic to be sure.

  • Indeed, I could watch it again and again... too bad the ingame sequences haven't aged that well.

  • was that the ending video to the game???

  • No, sometimes back then games used to put some of the credits if not all of them at the beginning because they had small teams or they had no standard way of doing them.

  • oooooooh, thx

  • great game, the song at the begining has lyrics, if you wait a bit longer before starting the game, ("Get out of my way, I can do anything") was the way it went, totally out of place, lol

  • Yep, that's why I skipped it, not to ruin the mood... if they would have used Boltthrower things would have been a different matter.

  • THE DEATHWING CHAPTER...!!!

    Bwahahaha, so cheesy!

  • Yet made of pure awesomeness.

  • Where can i download these old 40K games i want i want

    none on limewire

  • Try searching for "Abandonware" or "Home of the Underdogs"

  • that made me lol

    thx

  • I always love the sound track on old amiga games.

  • Though this is actually from the PC version (which had the crisper intrographics, with a more colorful palette, and smoother transitions on the shadings)

  • not bad.
