I have been a fan of Jimmy McCarthy since I first heard him perform in the Grapevine bar in the Metropole in Cork in the early 80's I sincerely hope that this Master songwriter eventually gets the recognition he richly deserves.
This reminds me of a time spent in Portugal ,,,,great memories of my dear brother Peo singing this, along with the rest of us, and I couldn't take my eyes my Darling Bro Michael (RIP) knowing this was the last time I would see him... god I miss you Mike.
beautiful... i was brought up on jimmy maccarthy. it's a pity his versions of his most famous songs aren't here. wanted to hear him sing one bright blue rose etc.
This man Jack Doyle was a legend. He'd be sitting in a pub across the street from Madison Sqaure Garden, drunk as a skunk 20 minutes before a fight. He'd still show up for the fight. He didn't give a Fxxk...Handsome as hell and a baritone voice that would match a tenor.
The only thing he couldn't fight was the lure of alcoho
@terrysmate1 , Hi there , delighted to get your info on the concerts, thanks a ton, I plan to head to the portlaoise one .......really looking forward to it , thanks again, Barbara
Cottlers Row, where Doyle grew up, is no longer standing but the local Heritage Council in Cobh have, in the past few weeks, erected a stone monument in his honour by where the row of houses stood.
Mikefromireland , thanks for mentioning the concert , hadn't realised he was making a return to the NCH. just booked my tickets . Go raibh mile maith agat
A wonderful song about Jack Doyle, the Gorgeous Gael and Irish heavyweight boxing contender. Married to the beautiful Movita, but died penniless and in the gutter. The song is breathtaking. Jimmy McCarthy is a national treasure and I can't wait to see him in NCH in March.
Couldn't agree more it would be great if this version was better known because it deserves more recognition. MacCarthy is still gigging, I heard this song live at the National Concert Hall in Dublin last summer and he's playing there again this March. Get those tickets while you can and you will be in for a treat
jimmy is one of the finest songwriters this country has produced - pity his cd's are not available - a great tribute song to the late jack doyle - thanks for posting
@jimmydeboy I agree this song is really beautiful. And also I search the Internet after cd's or DVD's of Jimmy MacCarthy. I only have his first album. And somewhere I wrote that there is a new album released in April 2010. Can someone tell me it is true. Also where can I buy his albusm ??
@Kalverweide28 - the new album is called hey ho believe, due for release in april, don't know what happened but believe the album is due august/ sept 2010, if i hear anymore i will post to you- regards
@jimmydeboy Thanks for doing that. I really appreciate this. Can you also tell me where I can buy the other albums from Jimmy MacCarthy: The Dreamer and The Moment?
@Kalverweide28 , these are not available at present, I asked jimmy on a radio programme recently about his past catologues, his reply was it was hopes to issue in the future, still waiting....I check all sites at least once a week for any updates, will let you have details when i get same. regards
