Even on their Earth Tour Nathan says that not a single song is about a video-game. There's usually a much more significant meaning and if you don't recognize that, you're missing the point of the band completely.

@tassadar419 Music theory is not a special knowledge but there are a lot of bands that show off their knowledge of it through their music. Most of that kinda of music is for music nerds (musicians). You dont necessarily need a background in music theory to enjoy that type of music or any other genre that involves lots of music theory. Take Jazz for instance. Most people who listen to Jazz dont even play an instrument and it is all about music theory and showing off your skills.

The argument could just as easily be made that DT essentially plays a more complex version of a style of music that's been around for 20+ years. Do it as fast and as accurately as you want; reinventing the wheel is still reinventing the wheel.

And by the way, I study music and I still find Dream Theater extremely boring.
