Roberta Flack was the first to really do justice to this song as it was sung in a different way before her version, all these modern versions now clone her exactly .
I have to award Roberta the top version, even after all this time !!
i was sayin'... just "listen...." to her... not with your ears... with something inside you.. and if it doesn't touch you... where you love, or where something hurt you, you are not human... whether it will bring you to tears, like it does me.. it may not... but it has to "touch" you... in some way... it is just that beautiful. And to have exchanged "glances"..... looks... like she metaphors about... OMG.... it's cutting me in two.... listening even now... OMG I loved him.... and he.. me... :(
this thing wudn't let me do but 2-thumbs up... but i promis u.... i have heard this song from Roberta Flack, Lauren Hill, the works.. but Leona's enunciations... of her words, her vocal stance.. is so remarkable I cried.... the first time i heard it... i wept for days... it reminded me of someone I loved that got killed and how 'taken' i was... with the first time I saw (saw) him and how empty... lost... i feel since I cannot see his face... ow wow! this song touches so much in a person.. listen
To know that a man wrote this for his wife.. It's absolutely beautiful. I haven't cried like this in a very long time. Funny how music does that to you, yeah?
You are the heart of my heart...my soul's true companion Christine. Your name still sounds like the most melodious song I've ever heard...your voice, the voice of love...my love...come back to me...I will promise to be good, to love, honor, trust and obey you. I will wear a ring that says I am yours and no other's. I am, yours.
The sad thing is that most of her fans probably won't have heard of Roberta Flack. RB's version of this song - the version from the "First Take" album which I haven't been able to find on here - is by far the best
Your right! Roberta's version is better. However, for those of you who think Leona is not good looking, Shit!, tell me you wouldn't DO her in a second. Yes, you too girls.
thanks for your comment it really is a lovely song it always moves me:) i hope you can share this song with someone special:) have a wonderful day, smile and be happy joanna1943:)
well I don't know who wrote this song all I know is when I first heard it roberta flack was singing it on the radio I called my boyfriend and told him to listen to it. we were very much in love and this song became our song:) 36 years later it is still our song. we had the best marriage anyone could ask for. he is in heaven now, but every time I hear it it make my heart go pitty pat. thanks for posting this.... you made my day. joanna1943:):)
@Joanna1943 "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" is a 1957 folk song written by political singer/songwriter Ewan MacColl for Peggy Seeger, Originally
Christine saw me cross the street and fell for me at a glance. She felt her heart stir in that moment like it had never before or since. Fool that I was I didn't know what she felt but I wished it were true. I let her slip through my grasp, through time, over the span of more than twenty years, through space, seperated by a thousand miles. I was too insecure and scared to believe I could possess her love without losing it to another, never understanding until now, that love was mine to give.
Isn't this an incredible song? Can you imagine being 14 years old and writing this for the lead singer in your band....only to not fall for him.
This was the testimonial of Dr. Lance "Sandy" Sandberg, PhD. While in dire financial straights, MCA bought the song from him claiming all
songwriting credits and royalties. Sadly Dr. Sandberg, has always heard is song attributed by others, and has never seen a dime from it popularity. Dr. Sandberg teaches at St. Phillips in San Antonio, Texas.
It would be interesting if Sandberg presented the proof himself - as an academic I'm sure he is able - to refute the claim of the Scots songwriter, Ewan MacColl, to this piece (published in 1957). MacColl never having failed to attribute authorship where possible to any songs he collected; never previously or since that piece, laying false claim to a song or being proven to be a plagiarist; or, as a communist of acclaimed political integrity, never attempting to profit from another's labour.
Ewan MacColl wasn't actually Scottish - his parents were. He was born in the "Dirty Old Town" of Salford as Jimmie Miller. He changed his name in the 1940s, but whether that was related to his alleged desertion from the army, I do not know.
Ho hum. As I mentioned elsewhere regarding this issue - yes - his parents were SCOTTISH - where I come from that makes HIM Scottish (were children to Scots service families born in India, INDIAN?) - JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE BORN IN A STABLE DOESN'T MAKE YOU A HORSE! You conveniently omit to mention his work regarding the Scots language - which he regarded as his native tongue.
And just because you weren't born in a psychiatric hospital, doesn't mean that you are a well-balanced personality. Please go and rant at someone who might take you seriously.
i love Matt Cardle's version it was the best version i have heard hear glee version was not as good
