@australianmade74 that one bit looked sort of like a river, but could have been hard compacted soil, not hard compacted dirt either. Sometimes I mistake my water for bitumen too.
Land Rovers and Range Rovers piss all over jeep for 4x4 ability, comfort and build quality. If you want a proper 4x4, get yourself a Defender (pretty much unbeatable off road). The Discovery 3 and range rover and range rover sport are still extremely capable off road vehicles with added comfort (and no plastic bits, unlike most jeeps!)
his suv is not 4 that the ground clearence is low the whelbase is to large the independence suspension is short , 4x4 no have low range skip plate and the electronic transfer torq to the rear if control by computer if detect slip in the front .
I'm over all the negative comments on YT when people have a crack at something different. Sure it's not a "real" 4x4 but SUVs are sometimes way understated. There are people out there that own Landcruisers and the likes and they never leave the road, good on you for getting it muddy and getting it outdoors. I owned a RAV4 for years and went on the beach, mud and firetrails with no problem..... putting a lot of the "real' 4x4 to shame.
Its funny when people see my mazda protoge go by with fishing poles sticking out the window way down at the end of they're mud bog road lol. I just balance and stradle the center lines or go threw the trees around the wet stuff. I got an xterra now, good trucks.
That wasn't bad at all. A BMW X5 would not do that, they get stuck on the slightest of wet inclines. I know the XC90 isn't going to do what my Landcruiser does but then again I bet the XC90 does more than 12mpg and isn't a uncomfortable.
I'm 13 and got an 04 xc90 about 4ft in the air (probably 3foot 8inches or so) and the suspension was fine, the only problem was the radiator was a little loose and the engine mounts were worn, but it hadn't been serviced for awhile, i miss going out to holy jim trail...
This car was mostly made to do better in snow, but at least Volvo didn't make an absolute pointless 4X4 like GMC or BMW. And all of those people who say this is a family car and ment to be on the road, why don't you save some gas and money and just buy a V70?! Really if you get a 4WD you shouldn't waste it just going in the city
i own this car since 2007 and its a great car but definitely not an off-road car. it hurts to see this car offroading in this video. this is a city car, family car. i would never take my XC90 offroading.
@bornwithanattitude : of course it is an offroad car. It is not as good as the range rover, a tractor or a tank offroad. But, its better than most other "suvs". However I would not ether take an expensive car like that offroad unless I really, really needed to.
I'm sure that the volvo didn't feel as tight on the road after this! The tranny's on these things already go out prematurely, i'm sure off roading isn't the greatest for it lol
It's not a f***ing off-road car. I have one of my own and it does take me up a big hill going up to our farm, even when it's 40 cm. of snow and I have my horsetrailer on with two big horses in. That could'nt my previous car, a volvo XC70 do, I just slipped down the hill. And that was not funny, considering I have expensive horses. And thats the reason I bought this car, It's GREAT!
Land RoverRange Rover are actually made by TATA of India, and back in the 90's the Defender parts were made in India - then the car was assembled in the UK.
all late model land rovers are shit in off-road situations, a couple years ago the Toronto Star pitted a new range rover against an old school 1960's land rover (the local car of choice for offroading in the jungle) in a point to point rally across the amazon and the new land rover failed within a couple days, the air bag suspension exploded and the car kept getting stuck. So no, most of the new 'suvs' you see in your local showroom aren't much more than flashy minivans.
@WeAllGonnaDieAlive its got decent ground clearance and a so called ubber pro awd system made by their military, so why cant it pass a simple off road course, while a piece of shit american jeep can easilly go through.
I own a land rover disco 2 and an xc 90 V8awd. The volvo is a BIG CAR. just crawl under it and look at the suspension, steering components, axles, etc. It is not a vehicle that can handle true off-roading. Even the volvo dealer AND my volvo mechanic siad to not even think about subjecting the xc 90 to what I ahve put the discovery through.
No, it shows that the Volvo can drive down a dirt ROAD. They didn't go OFF road at all. Driving your station wagon down a logging road and through a little mud doesn't mean you're off road.
well yeah, it could go OFF road, its just that no one would want to have the paint scratched off or any minor damage to their car, its a luxury SUV after all, and we have taken our xc90 into the Kalahari, do you consider that OFF road?
this is impressive, but my explorer would handle this with much less effort. considering it is now 10 years old and has 200,000 miles my 4x4 needs will remain in the hands of the ford motor company
it's real offroad car! not SUV! i were at offroad test drive and XC90 makes realy amazing offroad rides! so stfu if u say it's not offroad! my dad owned D5 last year and diesel XC90 s the best ever!

hey it does alright - on soft-roader standards ofc; its in no way spectacular if you compare it to a Land Rover but i was expecting it to be an X5 of a thing, which is pretty much hopeless offroad

my mom had 2 XC90s a V8 and A T6 the V8 was actually pretty good off road but the T6 was a weak peice of shit i still like my gmc yukon and chevy silverado better
i happen to own a manual 4x4 and drive it every day. im also not american nor an idiot. the video is clearly a demonstration of what a volvo xc90 diesel is able to achieve. (and yes i know it can do more as we have since challenged it further).
autos can sometimes be harder to offroad in if they have no decent control than a manual with low range...
@revraiteris He is definetly not American. Us Americans know to keep out volvos gas and quiet, and taking the soccer mom and kids to the mall. Worthless pieces of shit, all of them.
We took our XC90 to worse places than this, and it never got stuck...it is really ok, for an SUV...i know its not an off roader, but not bad at all...

lol my parents and I drove about 120km in the kalahari desert, it never got stuck though it really takes alot of gas when going 4x4 on 30km/h, it really isnt bad for a SUV to run on sand for nearly 5 hours on full 4x4
So what you're saying is a Volvo 245 can do what we've witnessed here, and so therefore an XC90 with AWD and higher ground clearance can do so much better.
Well, thanks for the enlightening post. I'll bear your positive comments in mind.
Well the muddy part may be where the 245 get stuck... Otherwise -> I've witnessed these mountain goats (200-series) climb amongst other things, ditches far more worse than these flat nice rocks.
It's no a Jeep at all, JEEP make Jeeps, everybody else makes 4x4's, Off Roaders or soft roaders...
I was in a serios accident in San Francisco driving Genuine Jeep (Grand Chrokee) in 2000, since then I continued to replace my old Jeep® with another, they're all I've owned addition to my Mercedes C320 - 5 star crash rated sedan.
I'm now on my 3rd Grand Cherokee. (Prev'was '97, then a 2002, now a 2006)
*Volvo do have a good reputation for safety here in the UK and Europe.
Land Rovers are built to be offroad perfomers, so of course they're going to be better offroad.
If you're wanting to buy a car which is going to go over very rugged terrain a Land Rover would suit you better, but in most normal circumstances I'd rather go with the XC90.
It aint "off-road" before it looks like this.

ok but the video isnt in svenska. and volvo market it as a SUV. not a jeep. so if this is true, its what the people refer to suvs as.

@Sokan1993

Volvo....the best car ever!!
Ugglan233 4 years ago
thought the Volvo is a better car, the Land Rover is a better off-roader
caraddict520 4 years ago
great car, it could probably handle a lot more off road.

land rover is best by far

Land Rovers are built to be offroad perfomers, so of course they're going to be better offroad.
If you're wanting to buy a car which is going to go over very rugged terrain a Land Rover would suit you better, but in most normal circumstances I'd rather go with the XC90.
