Land Rovers and Range Rovers piss all over jeep for 4x4 ability, comfort and build quality. If you want a proper 4x4, get yourself a Defender (pretty much unbeatable off road). The Discovery 3 and range rover and range rover sport are still extremely capable off road vehicles with added comfort (and no plastic bits, unlike most jeeps!)

I'm over all the negative comments on YT when people have a crack at something different. Sure it's not a "real" 4x4 but SUVs are sometimes way understated. There are people out there that own Landcruisers and the likes and they never leave the road, good on you for getting it muddy and getting it outdoors. I owned a RAV4 for years and went on the beach, mud and firetrails with no problem..... putting a lot of the "real' 4x4 to shame.

That wasn't bad at all. A BMW X5 would not do that, they get stuck on the slightest of wet inclines. I know the XC90 isn't going to do what my Landcruiser does but then again I bet the XC90 does more than 12mpg and isn't a uncomfortable.

I'm 13 and got an 04 xc90 about 4ft in the air (probably 3foot 8inches or so) and the suspension was fine, the only problem was the radiator was a little loose and the engine mounts were worn, but it hadn't been serviced for awhile, i miss going out to holy jim trail...

This car was mostly made to do better in snow, but at least Volvo didn't make an absolute pointless 4X4 like GMC or BMW. It is so not just a city car, just look at it. It did not even get stuck, and at 0:44 was some pretty deep mud.

It is a off-road car, but sure... It is possible for it to go through in the woods.

It's not a f***ing off-road car. I have one of my own and it does take me up a big hill going up to our farm, even when it's 40 cm. of snow and I have my horsetrailer on with two big horses in. That could'nt my previous car, a volvo XC70 do, I just slipped down the hill. And that was not funny, considering I have expensive horses. And thats the reason I bought this car, It's GREAT!

all late model land rovers are shit in off-road situations, a couple years ago the Toronto Star pitted a new range rover against an old school 1960's land rover (the local car of choice for offroading in the jungle) in a point to point rally across the amazon and the new land rover failed within a couple days, the air bag suspension exploded and the car kept getting stuck. So no, most of the new 'suvs' you see in your local showroom aren't much more than flashy minivans.

I own a land rover disco 2 and an xc 90 V8awd. The volvo is a BIG CAR. just crawl under it and look at the suspension, steering components, axles, etc. It is not a vehicle that can handle true off-roading. Even the volvo dealer AND my volvo mechanic siad to not even think about subjecting the xc 90 to what I ahve put the discovery through.

the second scene the mud is actually pretty deep but you can't see it that well. xc90 (and lots of other suv) struggle on sand because the automatic 4x4 engagement overheats as it is required for long ammounts of time on sand. dirt roads only require 4x4 in small pinches of difficult sections.

lol my parents and I drove about 120km in the kalahari desert, it never got stuck though it really takes alot of gas when going 4x4 on 30km/h, it really isnt bad for a SUV to run on sand for nearly 5 hours on full 4x4

I was in a serios accident in San Francisco driving Genuine Jeep (Grand Chrokee) in 2000, since then I continued to replace my old Jeep® with another, they're all I've owned addition to my Mercedes C320 - 5 star crash rated sedan.

I'm now on my 3rd Grand Cherokee. (Prev'was '97, then a 2002, now a 2006)

Land Rovers are built to be offroad perfomers, so of course they're going to be better offroad.

If you're wanting to buy a car which is going to go over very rugged terrain a Land Rover would suit you better, but in most normal circumstances I'd rather go with the XC90.
