Last night I talked to Danny on wind tunnel about this and we both noted the similarity between this and Keke Rosberg's 360 skid in Long Beach 1983. Danny said he was also in that race and he didn't quite see what happened until reviewing race footage.
I remember watching that on TV. A little skill with a butt load of luck. I remember an interview with Sullivan and he was shocked some 15 years later that he made it with out wrecking. He again thanked Mario for being a first class driver and not taking them both out. There are few highlights in motorsports that run you though so many emotions in a short period of time even knowing the outcome.

This was the last time the race wasn't broadcast live on American television. ABC showed an edited tape of the race that evening.
During those years, the commentators would call the start, the first few laps, the last few laps, and the finish as it happened. They'd voice-over the middle part of the race while the tape was being broadcast.
Thus, Jim McKay and Sam Posey described this incident some hours after it took place.
I did that in my jet boat once, and did not know it until I looked at the video.

Saw it in person. The view I had was what you see at about the 23 second mark. The crowd went absolutely nuts.
