The Ulster Banner as it was called was thrown in the dust bin when Ted Heath pulled the plug on the wee sectarian Orange club back in 1972. The flag has absolutely no legal standing in NI. It is a flag that will never ever fly from stormont again. NEVER NEVER NEVER
@wigsonthegreen how is it a sectarian flag? i though it was celtic symbolism originally? surely its non denominational. i dont understand how it became such a protestant thing.
@Skyifictionable the crown has nothing to do with protestantism, the royal family was originally catholic, the flag came from the coat of arms of the governor of belfast i believe. the crown was added to that coat of arms when the royal family was still catholic. the royal family isnt even protestant today, it has never been. the official religion of the royal family and of the UK is church or england. which is neither protestant or catholic.
@Skyifictionable its not based on the provencial flag, its the coat of arms of the former governor of NI, which came about in 1924, the crown wasnt added, its always been a part of it.
the church of england is not part of the protestant church. it came about after the reformation, as britain agreed with many protestant views however not all. they formed the church of england, which stands between catholocism and protestantism. SEE NEXT>>>
@paulgrills2 Erm, yes infact it is. Just look at the provincial flag. The Red Hand of Ulster is an Ancient IRISH symbol. When this flag was made in whatever year you think it was, they changed the colour, added a star and a crown. And called it your own
Christianity = Catholicism, Protestantism and Orthodox. The Church of England is under the Protestantism category. End of
Let me put it this way, Loyalists are Protestant so if the crown represents Loyalists, it represents Protestants. Comprende?
@Skyifictionable im sorry thats wrong about the flag, you can look it up if you want, perhaps the coat of arms came from the provencial flag, but i dont know for sure. the ulster banner definately came from that coat of arms.
i looked it up, i was wrong about the church of england. apologies! lol
i hate the way people assume that if you are loyalist then you have to be protestant, its stupid, but unfortunately thats the way it generally is in northern ireland.
@Skyifictionable you would be surprised how many there are! but its unfortunate that a persons religion defines their political standpoint, for instance i feel that i genuinly believe in the uk as it stands, however if i had nationalist parents im sure that my opinion would be skewed. which is unfortunate, but at least i admit it, most people do not lol
it doesnt seem to want me to post a link, is you google search "coat of arms of the governor or northern ireland" its the very first picture
@Skyifictionable yes thats possible, but i have yet to come across any information on that. i know a few nationalists that support northern ireland, i know its different than the religion thing, but its also a rarity because many nationalists dont recognise NI as a country.
@paulgrills2 Not sure if you noticed but you said "i know a few nationalists that support northern ireland". That's a contradiction. You can't be a nationalist and in support of the Union.
Also, I'm not really sure what you're trying to tell me, you didn't really make sense there. :S
@Skyifictionable haha oops, i meant the northern ireland football team, its cool that no matter their political view point, they understand that the country is still NI and so they support this country.
@paulgrills2 ....continued,......im not missing your point lol, the crown has not and never has represented protestantism, it represents loyalism. which in my view is and should be completely different.
@mitchking2006 hardly foreign..your ministers asked for money from the republic for motor way comstruction,no joke..they got it and a billion pound over time from england!oh and would a foreign state have a say in the running of nothern ireland?cause the republic does!oh a recent polls suguest that most people in britain, want N.i to be apart of the south, but since the cost is 6,000,000,000 a year just to keep it afloat, false ecomony where a quater are civil servants..we're sayying no!

Most English people know that its catholics who support the IRA who have murdered people throut the British Isles. Most English people know that the majority of people in NI wish to remain British.
people who wish to in N.I who wish to remain British are descendants of the british.
just like white settles in Africa who look to europe, but I'm not saying we should get rid of them(like in africa),but they should stop been so hostile towards us in the south,if we thought of you as you do to us we would not gives you funds like you were a region of our country. and if not for england you we be BANKRUPT!
Fair enough but NI is not a region of SI. It is a region within GB, which is why England/GB helps fund it. I don't expect SI to be in a position to fund anyone unless you sort out your own economic problems sharpish!
@3SpudnikSickels haha if not for england, the republic would also be bankrupt lol....sorry to comment on this when u posted over a year ago, but i couldnt resist! haha
no the union jack in a British flag, people who class themselves as British in Ireland came from Britain..Ireland is like France, except the old irish couldn't fend of the Anglo Normans.
The st patrick cross on the flag was an english design to fit into the original design(pre-1801)
the Irish never excepted it as there flag!
but they did except the union jack, but direct rule from London became unpopular when a 100years of uk rule had halved the population n turned Dublin to the slums of Europe
If the St Pat's Cross is an English design then why did Irish regiments on the continent (The Wild Geese) sometimes use it in their regimental flag ( Hibernian Regiment of Spain uses a clearly St Pat's cross orientated flag)? Also, some people say it was adopted as the flag AFTER gaining a measure of independence from London in the 1700's. You're bang on about the act of Union being terrible for Ireland, but I think you're wrong about the flag. But please let me know what you think, I wanna hear
o because u fly it on ur house that means it the norths flag wind ur neck in ffs plus u must of seen it in ur dreams on the city hall cause it does not fly there,,il tell u one place it will fly 2nite though the top of are local bonfire u prick,,,,,,,,,,,,
lol. Whatever you want to do. Personally i just love it when the tricolour goes up in flames. I think i have a video of it in killylea..want to see it?
I have a question for all the deluded Unionists out there:
If you want to be ruled by England so much, why don't you just go to England?
What possible misfortunes could befall this pitiful excuse for a country if, God forbid, it's reintegrated back into another country with a MUCH higher standard of living?
@CenturionRyan we r better off being part of the UK than the republic at the moment and we were all born here and we r going 2 stay under our government dont like go move over the border
The Ulster flag has a more imaginative design than the Irish rag any day. The Union flag is now the official flag of Northern Ireland. There should be no taig places in N.I . I thought Saint Patrick drove all the republican snakes out. Too many left
Northern Ireland is an illegally founded sectarian statelet, partitioned from the rest of the 32counties against the majority of the islands people, it was formed from the threat of violence from Carsons illegal army the UVF. Since then& throughout its time in power, unionism has used loyalist sectarian violence. There has always been strong links between the state forces& loyalist paramilitary groups with some policemen& soldiers having dual membership of state and terrorist organisations.

@paulgrills2 Of course. Most European countries were Catholic at some stage
Haha, silly boy. This flag is based of the IRISH Province of Ulster's Flag, that flag is ancient, long before your culture and people even existed
The crown was added shortly after NI was created. lol. The British royal family was Protestant then.
Church of England = form of Protestantism.
You missed the point, he said "i dont understand how it became such a protestant thing." I answered. It's because of the Crown.

About 99.99999999% of Loyalists (in NI) are Protestant. I'd be shocked if I found a Catholic Loyalist.
