@DiamondPilotDan Its a regular jam jar made of glass! any type can be used. You might wanna blow fresh air into it if you've tried to ignite it without any sucsess. Denatred alchohol is a type of ethanol that has been added some stuff which makes in poison to drink. Its often used for heating food when being in the nature. I can send you more information on PM tomorrow.
@Thunderbolt505T are you thinking about the glass cracking into pieces cuz of heat difference or the glass blowing into pieces which spread everywhere when igniting it? i dont think the last one is ever gonna happen unless you are using some kind of super fuel or bad glass
i tired running it in a bucket of water and where the water ended on the top of the jar thats where it split is ur idea so good becuase it surrounds the whole jar?
A tin can you wouldn't have to stop because it would never crack. Also if you wanted to get crazy you could circulate ice water around the can using a pump for a fish tank
wow that jam jar lasted so long. i was wondering what if you made a pulse jet out of metal instead of glass. if you are to get some screw together some screwtogether piping(dont rember the actual name) would it not break?
@CameraBoy999 its the best at resisting wear due to heat. propper pulse jets produce extreme amounts of heat. any metal used will glow bright orange once the jet is warmed up, but stainless steel has the least amount of strength lost from the extreme heat cycles of reaching temp of over +300, and then returning to room temperature. mild steel will work, but will only last a few runs as the metal fatigues and caves in on itself. aluminum being a soft metal will just melt
@CameraBoy999 titanium would work well, price being the limiting factor. alot of allows do work well, but again its gotta be resistant to strength loss from heat cycles. look around on here theres alot of stuff. ive got a video of a jam jar jet, but i dont have an adequate fuel supply to make my bigger jets run yet
Is there any way to turn it on its side to try and get some thrust out of it? I understand that the cooling water wont work but if the engine was able to sustain ignition then I have an idea about cooling the glass that I got from my electric R/C boat. The motor in the boat had a metal sleeve to distribute the heat and then had metal tubing coiled around it with flowing water. Now in this instance the wtr was fed from the prop but we can over come that. What do you think? Side mounted jam jet?
Close, but not quite. It actually turns out that these type of things do produce (some) positive thrust. Basically when the gases inside expand and are forced out the hole, the mass flows mostly straight out in 1 direction, resulting in thrust. But when the air is "sucked" back in, it doesn't get sucked from 1 direction, it comes in from all directions, so the lines of thrust mostly get canceled out. I made a toy boat using a similar principle using pulses of steam in water, worked great.
I thought about the same thing! Now, a fuel feed system, and a flowing water cooling system. I'm going to have to mess around with building these again!
success not sucsess

how much ethanol u used is it 100% pure ?
TheMkrules 3 months ago
@TheMkrules Hi. Used just enough to cover the bottom. The ethanol i used was between 95 and 99,9% pure.

what type of jar is it? do you blow fresh air into it before igniting? where can i buy Ethanol and what's it called?

I am amazed at how pulse jets can use such little fuel and be so efficient!

looks like a soul trapped in a jar... creepy!

is there a way to tell if the glass is going to explode? i'd like to try and make this but I wanna know so i can get away before i get injured

Your hole could be smaller, which would make it run a little more energetically. Submerging it in water is something i gotta try

@bestSVMS let air, more heat = cracking sooner

I had the same idea. You should try to attatch a fuel line in some way.

@CameraBoy999 Sounds like a good idea, i'll try to one out of metal AND i will ofcourse be filming the final product ;)

good i cant wait to see it

@CameraBoy999 propper pulse jets are made of metal. stainless steel works the best and theyre loud as hell

Just buy HEET gas-line antifreeze and water remover, it has high methanol content thus making for the perfect burn
khalo1khan 2 years ago
Do you think It would produce the same effect using butane?
massivemango 2 years ago
nope, it will only make a PSSSH, then its over because butane is a gas
nwfklan 2 years ago
methanol is kinda hard to get around here, how about lighter fluid?

zippo fuel could work

Ice was stupid, temperature differential is what causes the breakage, ice will heighten the difference.
surround it in hot water?
MasterTenku 2 years ago
can you use somethik alse but not Denatured alcohol (ethanol)
NumarkDjTakis 2 years ago
you can use gasoline/petrol (car fuel) and you can also use nitromethane(fuel for remote controlled cars) but thats expencive.
nwfklan 2 years ago
yes thats what i have been using

put salt in it so that the flame would be visible

Newtons 3rd law. Because the jar has to suck in air everytime it pushes it out the boat wouldn't move.
MasterTenku 2 years ago
no the thrust provided by the explosive expulsion of the air counter acts the natural intake of air.

But the expansion of burning gas mix has way more energy than suction.
