I've seen some of the videos of the SSD and it looks extremely fast when you open up files and applications. As far as boot up time and shutting down, the boot up time is indeed way faster, but the shutting down is almost the same. SSD is way too expensive now so it's better to wait until they decrease the prices.
@JSantana319 Are you sure? My Macbook Pro's shutdown time was almost halved when I installed an Intel X-25E 64GB...of course I paid quite a bit for the drive, too.
Well it depends because when you leave your computer on for days and then you shut it down, then it takes a bit longer to shut down than when you shut it down daily. Let me ask you a question, is 64GB enough for you? Because I think that's not enough space for SSD.
@JSantana319 it's interesting that you posted your comment 10 months ago =] because now, 10 months later, SSDs are now more affordable! I got myself a 60gb Vertex 2 Extended for $140. Boot up times are very fast.
@GodMystic You're right about that, but I meant for configuring it with a Mac is extremely expensive. 128GB of SSD is $300 if you put it on a 15 inch Macbook Pro and over $1,300 for 512GB of SSD lol.
Alright. From my experience, adding two programs to my dock (which really just adds two shortcuts - which means all it has to load is the shortcut itself and the thumbnail) made no noticeable change in my startup speed. The big difference would come from the program actually running at startup, which these aren't.
All I'm really saying is: If this guy wanted to sabotage the HDD Macbook's startup speed, there are much better ways to do so.
I really doubt it makes a difference. As long as those programs aren't loading during startup, which they aren't, the boot time increase is miniscule at best. My Macbook starts up just as fast as the day I got it.
Well its the Safari on my Mac that takes so long to boot. It just bounces and bounces. When I first got the computer it took only 2-3 bounces. Now it could be 23 before it starts. And its only Safari that does this. I think Apple needs to rework some code.
@JedediahJohnson I switched to chrome. I know exactly what you mean with all the bouncing, it was the only application that took forever to start, switch to chrome, so much simpler, and therefore faster. IMO
I'll try to post some videos showing startup of the usual applications likes Safari, iTunes etc. I've posted a video showing startup of Visual Studio (heavy application for application development on windows) - be aware, this is executed inside a virtual machine (vmware fusion). Safari should not take 10-17 seconds to start... have you checked for virus?
Thats a good point! Ive read about it somewhere, and the next generation of OS will all have better support for these types of disks. Im hoping for a release of Snow Leopard soon.
Yes, I wish to they sold them cheap, but it was worth it. I guess from a year from now you probably get SSD disk much cheaper and with more capacity.
Regarding the capacity 80 GB is more than enough for me, because I only use the laptop for surfing and work (programming inside Virtual Machines). I load the disk with as little data (music, photos and videos) as possible for me it was all about the performance gain.
You'll be surprised how little disk space you really need. What usually take space on disks is images, music and video. You can buy an external drive for this?
I don't need it really. It's still too expensive to get one now. When they improve the life of an SSD, the capacity and decrease the price then I'll upgrade.
holy shit faster Facebook

@idrinorbarsaku the best way to have a fair test is to have a fresh install of the same OS

Hmm, think you need to delete safari and install it again, it usually starts up on 1 to 2 bounces on my 2 year old MacBook

Sounds like you have some serious issues with your current installation of Safari..

wow now I know what to really get.
I wish they sold them cheep though, yeah?
and I wish they could have an ssd of at least 320 gb
because that would be so cool don't you think?
lazynbord 2 years ago
256GB is enough for me but they're for $850!! I hope they'll be even cheaper by November. If it was only $250 for a 256GB SSD then I'd buy it.

Do you need SSD for loading a movie or pics?
i think you should only use SSD for programs, buy another HDD for storage... 64SSD is big enough for me for boot applications.
