  • Unfortunately, the aluminum box is not a Faraday cage at 2450 MHz, the frequency that your cell phone works at. The wavelength of a 2450 MHz signal is about 1-1/4". The screws in the cover will need to be closer together than this. Try adding some metal tape across the joint between the box and cover at 1" spaces.

  • Hi bill ,will it work if using a copper foil which is conductive and make all the pedal inside and outside with adhesive copper foil , will it help removing noise?

  • This has got to be the shittiest guitar effects pedal ever!

  • @audiobuttmaster When you are finished getting butt blasted you might want to watch the video again. It is an aluminium box with a cell phone in it, not a guitar effect. LOL

  • @wnorcott There are lots of good websites showing how to build real effects. Do a search. Most of them are bit more difficult to build than your design though.

  • @audiobuttmaster I posted a three part series right here on youtube on how to build effects, have you watched it? More than 50,000 have. I also have my own company and design and build guitar effects for sale. Why don't you watch it first then decide. It is on my channel page.

  • @wnorcott you are awesome whit those tutorials and the pedals dont mind the ignorant haters like @audiobuttmaster

  • You've got to ground the box.

  • @jarrettmattson

don't blame him for being stupid it happens to us all. but hopefully he'll realize that the box needs to be shielded and shielding isn't imaginary. :)

  • @jarrettmattson exactly, faraday cage doesn't work without grounding. Metal cage is a source of noise when ungrounded and works like an antenna, it doesn't shield anything this way. Of course a well planned circuit is the most important thing, but faraday cage - metal enclousure decrease EMI noise for sure.

  • Don't know what kind alu box you are using, but my new video seems to prove RF shielding with an alu box, I'm using a TEMS telephone, that is developed to measure cell phone radiosignal.

  • Our videos shows to different conclusions :o| Guess we'll have to bring out the heavy technical gear, TEMS phone ecc :P for recording what happens when a phone is put into a box like that, thanx for the "battle" :D

  • Did you connect the ground from the cell phone to the aluminum box?

I mean ofcause the aluminum box is a better shield than a plastic box, because it's electrically conductive.

"If you build a audio circuit properly YOU DO NOT NEED A METAL CASE."

YES YOU DO, especially fuzz circuits, wich amplifies all electro magnetic signals it picks up.

  • Thanks for listening. I build fuzz boxes with alumunum or polycarbonate cases and sell them commercially, they do not hum because I shield them properly. I see you created a video of your Rebote 2.5 echo (in a metal case). Check out my Rebote 2.5 (above, in a plastic case) mine has infinite repeat, so all noise is amplified and fed back 'infinitely' & listen for yourself. Many people have told me mine is the cleanest sounding Rebote they ever heard, a plastic case yet noise free.

  • Yes I did "connect the ground from the cell phone to the aluminum box" LOL

Check out my newest video response I added yesterday. By the way if you know how to reject EMI "in the circuit" like you are supposed to, then it does not matter what case you use -- or no case for that matter.

    Bill

  • You wrote "Aluminum stomp box case "better shielded"? " in the title, thats where I'm heading at, now you are writing that you are good at rejecting EMI from your circuit, Witch you obviously are, I watched your videos, and I'm not trying to start a war here or anything :) please watch my new respond, again it shows a different conlusion to what yiu are trying to prove.

  • micro waves versus radio waves Duh??

  • Microwaves are radio waves the only difference is the wavelength.

    Bill

  • sorry man i must be a dumbass..i watched ya video on shielding...so the core goes to the input...and the outer(shield ) goes to ground...but the shield on the other end is not connected at all???..is that right..sorry man..im thick!!!...excellent vids btw...

  • You are correct, the other end of the shield is not connected at all. No you are not thick brother it is just experience and some tricks, glad I can help.

  • cheers man...waheyy i'm not thick...ha ha..

    thanks a lot dude..

  • hi bill..i have been building guitar fx..and am not sure about the shielding on th input part....can/do i use guitar type cable and just use the inner core to the input..or do i have to use the outer core to the ground on board or something...cheers..

  • Yes connect the inner core to the input and the shilding to the ground on the input cable. The shielding on the other side of the cable is not used.,

Instead of guitar cable I use the much thinner shielded cable "stereo cable" like you would use to hook up a stereo or a DVD player. Guitar cable is too thick.

If you look at my series on building guitar effects, Part 2 describes how to wire up the input jacks and switches.

    Bill

  • cheers bill...i will check it out..nice one ..rob.

  • I was thinking of using 8' copper grounding rod and then linking it via copper wire and alligator clips to military Ammo cans. They are big, metal and airtight.

  • But... the box has holes...

I think 900Mhz phone signal will go in and out the box easily.

The real box will also has holes for the jacks and pots.. I don't know..It's a good test but not the definitive

    Jokeing ON

you only show how small is your phone.

    Jokeing OFF

  • Shielding is useless until you tie the box to the ground.. If you had a groud wire from your cell phone connected to the box, you wouldn't have any incoming RF on the antenna..

  • Thanks for listening! I mostly agree with you. To get rid fo RFI case must connect (using ta grounding strap) to an actual earth ground, not just the circuit ground. And nobody does with guitar effects. To eliminate RFI and hum it is better to use good shielded cable on the input and a ferrite bead inductor to reduce the RFI. I am an old ham radio guy. I can try it again this time tying the cell phone ground to the case and see what happens. Good suggestion to try out.

    Bill

  • Very enlightening demonstration, Bill. What happens if you throw in a few unpopped popcorn kernels? :)

  • Hi Lanny I was going to put the whole thing in a microwave oven and see if the cell phone heats during the demo up but I chickened out.

    Bill

  • Bill I Think Yer Ready For Myth Busters You Should Give EM A Call I Think Thier In Frisco Still Im Thinkin Maybe You Might Have A New Career :) :) :)Peace Bro
