I don't get it, why was the player avoiding the Newalone particle marked "Power Up"?

Do you get a special bonus for keeping that particular particle alive until you clear the stage?

This Boss gives priority without fail and eats "Power up" newalone first.

However, this is not especially important.

Yeah, but the story was considered too dark and depressing. So, that's why they changed it.

@Jac2Mac Actually, though it's repeated all the time by fans, there's never been any official confirmation that Metal Black was ever called Darius III. The game's working title was Project Gun Frontier II (a name still shown in the attract mode), and if you remember, Darius Gaiden was called Darius III throughout most of its development. Metal Black's provenance definitely lies with Gun Frontier, then; it just happens to have a few fish in it. ;)
