  • A "point" or a "summation" is necessary? How did Dr. Nuland's talk make you FEEL? And did those feelings inspire IDEAS within you, ideas you can relate to as a unique individual ... did his talk create the desire within you to be the best you can be, to make a contribution to others?

  • Gotta love how the poor's demise and our 'success' (which is shockingly coincidental - all conspiracies aside) is unilateral. I don't really like elitism tbh.

FYI 'economy' is a zero sum game friends

  • If you are not using others to get rich, then you are being used to get rich by others. This is the nature of civilization.

  • "If you are not using others to get rich, then you are being used to get rich by others. This is the nature of civilization"

Civilization is not defined by economy, but the reverse has more truth. True man is ambitious and wealth and power needs are partly human, BUT we stimulate it's growth on the internet, billboards, radio and TV.

The survival of the fittest itch is constantly being scratched.

  • No, you are wrong. The total aggregate wealth and net wealth per person has been increasing for a long time in the Western world that embraces the market.

And also in India, etc as they adopt competitive policies.

When you add in all the art and music accessible to the masses, your statement is even more inane.

I wish your great, great grandparents could come back and see all that you and others have while you bemoan 'zero sum' non-sense.

  • I may be wrong. My value system is happiness not dexterity based.

    But to answer your issue:

Pointing to western civilization as proof positive of the global picture is the truly inane argument IMO. Also I suggest you look up the video "The Story of Stuff" if you are not just an agitator and truly are interested in the subject.

    ...

IMO using "all that I have" as a barometer for progress, is like judging a kid's future or present contentment by how many toys he has in his room

  • JIDDU KRISHNAMURTI talks with DR. Alan Anderson

  • Hi, Sherwin Nuland, thank you for your video, if possible, I'd like to read your scripture, complement my hearing.

  • It seemed that overall he was applauding TED, which is all well and good, but I much prefer the talks where the speakers actively engage the audience and talk about substantive change and the potential to alter the current social climate, or even when they talk about the amazing things they have done in the past as an example of human ability. This was more of an elongated pat on the back, which was quite uneccessary.

  • Its about apriciating life watch. 5:44

And last but not least helping others. watch 10:14.

to sum it up he is trying to make you apricate life and kind of make you try love others beacuse he has experianced love and he knows that some people need love.

  • I take exception to "We are to be the world's healer." It presumes the rest of the world has nothing to offer in the area of "healing," which is grossly false & prejudiced. We have much to learn from the rest of the world about true healing. Western Medicine is not the "be all/end all." It was of little use to me during 3yrs of disability. My "Hope" came from alternative therapies, one of which I am now in training to be a practitioner. Now I can offer true "hope" to others worldwide. PEACE.

  • He spoke for 12 minutes without saying ANYTHING AT ALL.

I guess just using the word "HOPE" 20 times in a speech is enough to earn you 4 stars in this day and age.

  • LOL.. how very true.. some times the speaches in TED tend to be very pointless, and unneccessarily long..

  • Woot Woot "Loved This Talk"

  • That was such a good video! haha! Good job! I like the music in the background too. What was the song you used?

  • Now we know who inspired Barack Obama to come up with his campaign slogan of hope and change... (note that this speech was actually held back in Feb 2003)

  • lame

  • I agree. the root of one word is the same as the root of another word, from languages that are no longer used, then this guy all of sudden thinks he's enlightened by it. we're supposed to be enlightened by people who butchered each other in colosseums?

  • And of course that totally negates all other activities.

    Harsh

    And puritanical

  • it doesnt, but i just dont think the romans are wisest of them all. they pretty much used greek innovations to their advantage, much like the chinese making cheap imitations of the western-japanese innovations. I dont consider them a civilization to learn from. especially not when someone is only using root words to try and prove a point.

  • Indoeuropean is no longer used. But it's the goddamn root to most languages used today. But of course, I don't expect you to correctly appreciate what it means.

  • the point is not where the roots come from. the point is theyre not relevant. believe me, ive seen plenty of people trying to prove a point by using the root words of modern words. its simply irrelevant, yet when he says that root word of whatever is whatever then people think he's enlightened or something. merriam webster must have been a prophet then.

  • I'm gonna jump ahead and assume you know nothing about linguistics or semiotics. So, please, don't say something is "irrelevant" just because you don't know it's importance.

  • then explain the importance of a root word from a largely dead language.

  • You can't expect me to explain the whole reception theory in a 500 characters comment.

  • Slow but powerful speech.

Nearly every human being fails to reach even 1/4th of his or hers complete potential.

We can do more to challenge ourselves. Modern technology and policy demands a modern approach to the way that we think and the goals that we set.

Bam. Put that shit in your favorite quotes!

    heh heh

  • LOL awesome!

  • More like 1/10 or a greater margin. I bet you personally know more f-ups than people who help others continuously.

  • He's a good speaker, but I liked his other presentation about electro-shock therapy better.

  • NEGATIVE COMMENT.

  • I hate all these people negatively commenting on TED you don't deserve to be seeing these videos. How could there be anything negative coming from any one TED video

  • boys will be boys.

  • gratex my man, lol. its a small youtube

  • > I hate all these people negatively commenting on TED you don't deserve to be seeing these videos. How could there be anything negative coming from any one TED video

I hate all these people who comment on people commenting negatively. You don't deserve to be commenting on these videos. How could there be anything negative coming from any one YouTube user.

  • you are a walking contradiction

  • Ya just made a negative comment.

  • > Ya just made a negative comment.

    *implodes*

  • More scientific research is required to enlighten us as to why male waistlines travel upwards with age.

  • > More scientific research is required to enlighten us as to why male waistlines travel upwards with age.

Suit yourself. I still want to know more about the laws of bellybutton lint.

  • duh

  • You people want your talking points... TED is about ideas, not concrete answers on what to do and this will be the outcome. Ideas big and small, this one is about hope - an idea that we really need to get back in touch with after so much talk about economic downturns and fear of far off terrorists...

  • exactly, its like the laws of science, laws are not interesting to scientists, theories are. fools.

  • so helping poor people is a pointless subject or just in general?

  • I think he's saying the rambling on the subject was pointless, I enjoyed it though.

  • this idealism was about to make me hurl....this guy could easily get a job in obmas admin.....

  • I guess you've eloquently voiced your disposition to such a proposition.

  • i'll throw in with that. like it or not, we have a global community. that's just the way things are. and "we" are certainly not treating it with respect, dignity, humanity, unity. we're treating it as a commodity, or a market for it, or a producer of it.

just because he's not offering up new ideas, he's trying to draw attention to the fact that things could be better. and that is NOT pointless.

  • Fair enough. I guess I was just expecting a little bit more from a talk like this. I would assume that most people who are interested in talks from TED already know that something needs to be done and he is just preaching to the choir. I guess that is helpful in a way in that it reminds the people listening between the more area-specific talks to remember what the real bottom line is, helping people in the real world.

  • oh i've certainly seen TED talks that i thought were waaaay 'better' or more inspirational, but i think writing this one off as pure bullshit- or worse, some people are denouncing it for a message of unity and helping the poor of the world- is, well... selfish.

jamais cascio's recent TED talk was brilliant but his sentiment was essentially the same. he just had the time to compile lists of all the 'hopeful' things coming down the pipeline, instead of focusing on the pipeline's existence.

  • This was an utterly pointless talk as far as I can tell. Perhaps someone could enlighten me, but all I heard was quite a few quotes and rhetoric about the strength of the human spirit.

I am really not trying to put down this video for no reason. I really felt that it had no purpose and was just rambling. If someone can tell me what it was that he was trying to say and what I should look for when re-watching it, I'd appreciate it very much.

  • "I am really not trying to put down this video for no reason. I really felt that it had no purpose and was just rambling"

    welcome to TED!

this is not even the worst video, it's actually among the best...

  • He seemed to be the final speaker and was attempting to give a closing speech for that particular TED conference. Might just have to take it into context to get where he is coming from with all the rambling.
