Chop, chop, "alipitogen"! Don't touch Josquin - he is second to none in the 16th century. The opinion of his contemporaries and later generations attests to that. That said, I think Gombert IS wonderful also!
I'm now putting my head on the chopping block. Gombert was a better composer than Josquin. There now -I've said it. Politically correct nonsense is emasculating aesthetics. It's time to say what we think. If not I will continue to buy cds whose notators will proclaim Josquin, Palestrina and Victoria as the greatest composers of the Renaissance -which , to me , is utter nonsense.Magnificent as those 3 were, my ears tell me they were all outshone by contemporaries, predecessors and/or successors .
Absolutely incredible. Listen to the expertly executed details, like the synchronized trills in the high voices at 2:04 on the word "plourer". It is amazing what Gombert is able to do with only two words like "voye morir" at the end of the piece.

C'est très, très, très beau. Le génie de l'école franco-flamende s'impose. Et tu y participes. Many thanks for this little marvel.

2:10 -2:25 sounds like 20th century music. i've never heard such alike in renaissance music. it's so moving.

Ich denke an die Geliebten,
die ich zurücklassen muß.
Ach! Es gibt keine Hilfe für mich,
deshalb muß ich erst recht weinen und seufzen,
erlebe ich weitere Folter.
Ich sage meinen Geliebten Lebewohl,
als ich plötzlich in den Tod gehe.
