Tanks are never going to become obsolete. That was the big idea during the 1990s, that the days of the big heavy tanks were over, and future armies would have more lightly armored, more "mobile" tanks. Then we invade Iraq and they find the only vehicles with the capability to drive through areas where you're getting shot at really badly is a tank.

I genuinely think tanks will become obsolete in the not too distant future. Combat helicopters and infantry with ATGMs make tanks redundant. Countries that can afford attack helos, i think will opt for more helos and a gradual removal of tanks. the benefit to cost ratio for helos, i think, is far greater than the benefit to cost ratio of tanks.

With all this BS about the M1A2 bieng unreliable why then has the US never lost one to an enamy tank . T-72 has 125mm gun yet has never killed an abrams yet the only thing to ever kill an abrams are massive IED's friendly fire from another M1A2 or 10 RPG's to the rear of the engine compartment !

Here is the thing about that. Russians have 3 times as many tanks as US. And their tanks are more agile and easier to produce/maintain. Abrams are top of the line when it comes to electronic equipment and armor but they wouldn't be much of a match against any country that can attack them from both air and the ground.

Do you have any idea how many thousands of gallons of fuel or rounds of ammo it takes to keep a tank division fighting for just one day ? More than you'd like to count .
