  • I don't know what he is saying, but he is very good at playing... he seems a little tense though.

  • love the tone qualtiyyyy (:

  • @123errian And why nor Chinese?

  • His Cantonese got a very thick accent... speak English.

  • huh?

  • I agree... that is tense playing. Nevertheless, he has a great sound.

  • when he talks sometimes it goes into a type of london accent haha (: but good tips ? i dunno.

  • how long he hasn't been talking cantonese? lol

  • it almost sounds like he's an ABC (coming from a former US immigrant from HK that first became a resident 4 years ago)

  • nice tips. very good explaning...

  • huh?

  • So, if I understand correctly, he is giving himself a masterclass?!?

  • funny comment lol

  • he sways a LOT!!!! XD

  • lol

  • where he come from? his cantonese is strange!

  • He's probably not a native speaker. No big deal.

  • Perhaps it's an accent from a native dialect? My Grandma has a really strong Hainan accent!

  • why did he say sissy and sayi

  • I know... my Cousin and my sis said that... so ya... whatever

  • He always says "ho".... lolz

  • literally it means "good" in Canontese. Actually it's sort of "okay" or "alright".

  • hes explaning what to do on the on the Clarinet part... lolz in understand ...

when she 1st plays he says

" when you were listing u slowly for louder and louder and the last note u push hard air inside it (or soemthign O_O i don't play this xD i play the f horn xD)

  • he makes it look so easy

  • Good, I like clarinet and you play very well.

  • im cantonese and i play the clarinet!!!(:

  • lol

  • subtitles?! please

  • The reason why you percieve his canto a little differently is cuz of his british accent. It changes, say an american-canto accent would sound different than a british-canto accent.

  • his cantonese doesn't have a fluent accent xD

  • ohh... speak in english please!

I dont understand that you say.. :(

    good job :)

  • he speaks cantonese kind of weird. :D

  • Maybe it isn't his first language? It does sound different :/

  • LOL santa claus

  • haha his cantonese has english accent

  • And I'd like to add: I just confirmed that

Chi-Yu *was* performing on at least asst. principal on the *newest* star wars prequel soundtrack. My original reference was to the original soundtracks.

  • It's pretty good .

    On akidojaodj lingual

  • W00T CANTO PRIDE!!!! jk

  • Asians rock! Others rock too, but GO ASIAN!!!

  • wonderful !

  • I wish I could understand what he is saying...:(

  • I play clarinet i had never seen a professional

  • 8:45 3rd movement: listen to the percussion and the flute/2nd clarinet(* same as the above), but you still needs to perform this section with your own sensation.

At the end, he said that he is not fluent in Cantonese and hope that the audience could understand him.

  • Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade

    6:45 2th movement: like solo

    7:29 3rd movement: like solo

8:09 he compares between the 1st time and the 2nd time of the same rhythm:

1st time: like solo, so you have more time to perform with your own style

2th time: listen to the flute/2nd clarinet (*he uses the Chinese unit, which is the same to both the clarient and flute, please consult with the score) and accompany with them.

  • From here, Mo's talks about Beethovan 6 and Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade.

    5:00 Beethovan: 6nd symphony, 2nd movement:

1, listen to the violin, pay attention to the rhythm

2, slow cresendo starting from the beginning but soft at 76th bar.

  • 4:00 Mo's suggestion during the audition:

    1, breathe deeply to calm down youself;

    2, use appropriate style and tone;

    3, good rhythm;

    4, don't "SqueakKKk"!!

  • 2:20 4th movement: the rhythm is the same throughout the movement.

3:00 97th bar: beat, accent, staccato

3:16 Tan repeats the rhythm but without staccato.

3:40 The whole 4th movement is Accelerando with 140 notes at the beginning but 180 notes at the end.

  • The first 4 minutes, Mo talks about Tan's symphony

    0:00-0:56

The song consisits of 4 movements. The most important to the clarient are the 3rd and 4the movements.

    3rd movement: staccato, accent, tempo

0:57 32-35th bar: slow cresendo + accent at the end

    1:22 51-54th bar: accent

Tan refers to Beethovan's Eroica symphony and combines Eroica with Chinese music in this part.

  • Nice video, buy could you PLEASE put up translation for this?

  • Sogoi desu ne.

  • is there a version of this in english?

  • wait what???

  • 好~! 难得用广东话为我地解释~ 多谢~!!

  • hihi does anyone know where to find the piano sheets for the symphony orchestra? I went on their channel and went to the prepare tab for it, but there was no pdf file listed.

  • i've had the same problem

  • i dont that there has ever been a symphony orchestra with piano, and probly never will be. onlyy string, woodwind, and percusion

  • yeah and trumpets and shit, what are you talking about

  • There are piano positions in orchestras across the world, and composers like Stravinsky and Bernstein wrote for it in their pieces (not solos/sonatas/concerti).

  • he has quite a heavy english accent when he speaks it but the content is pretty much the same as the english version

  • how true that most clarinetists have issues with sticking their fingers in the air when not using them lol @ his left pinky. It takes more finger muscles to play faster music like that xD

  • i'm in my fourth year of playing clarinet and it is still so hard to get to the high notes as quickly, without any delay as he can.

    BRAVO! \m/

  • I know his Cantonese is not the best, but is already good enough to make people understand what he wants to say.

  • What about the air scape???

  • Please can this be translated? I really want to hear what he's got to say?

  • boooooooooo

  • I wish I could understand what he was saying x.X

  • woah! youtube changed!

  • nobody knows how to leave comment right now,

    lol

    nice video ♬♫♩♪

  • Aw crud, wish I could actually understand this.

    Really good anyways.

Good luck to whoevers trying out!

  • Wow, thanks for letting us know. Everyone here cares.

  • oh thank you

  • Stop boasting about your incredible geniousness and try out already!!!

  • god! shut up bitch just sharing

  • i don't know what he is saying but he is a allsome player! i know because i play the clarinet!! but i am not that good yet! :)

  • he talks way to much but he is an amazing player so i guess he is allowed to

  • its a b flat clarinet

  • can someone tell me what is this clarinet he's playing? i never seen anything like this before.

  • its the most known clarinet lol

  • Looks and sounds like a well-aged Buffet Prestige, Boehm system with the barrel switched out. Don't know which kind of barrel however.

  • its not a click barrel, but i think he's using a brillhart

  • lol.. i wonder why they posted a canton version of the masterclass... he has a cute canton accent =P

  • I DON'T KNOW WHAT HE'S SAYING!

eh... i'm not skilled enough on the clarinet to for this piece anyway : (

  • Are you sure about that? He wasn't exactly playing a virtuosic concerto in this video, only parts of Tan Dun's symphony. Watch the LSO perform Petrushka and the Rite of Spring (both on this website, 2008). He plays the E-flat clarinet in the Rite of Spring video and second clarinet in Petrushka.

  • Calclar was probably referring to some basic elements apart from finger technique. Many people critical of high level playing are bothered by the excessive air leaks in the embouchure, the interrupted breathing in the middle of the Beethoven 6th, and the rigid, metronomic quality to some of his playing... but... there are things to which he had an advantage getting in the LSO. Work authorization in England for 1 and Marriner being his teacher and coach for the job. No reason to knock him though.

  • He still had to audition.

  • Stating the obvious doesn't support your argument.

  • Marriner being his teacher didn't have much of an effect on him getting the job.

Also, he's been with the orchestra for ten years, so I believe that's long enough.

  • Haha... Okay. I only mentioned it because that's what Chi-Yu said. Forgive me for being ignorant enough to believe it.

  • If Chi-Yu studied with Marriner and sucked at the audition, I doubt the personnel manager would've said "Y'know what, you got it anyway."

  • I agree, but what are you on about? It was calclar suggesting that he sucked, not me. I merely pointed out things to which he had an advantage to actually getting hired regardless of how he plays. Everybody who's been in this business long enough knows that a spot in the finals doesn't mean getting hired for the job, even IF you play fantastically. But if Marriner Student A is standing there against Random Auditionee B, both playing equally well, who do you think is more likely to get the bid?

  • Btw, "LSO" stands for "London Symphony Orchestra." This guy played in the Star Wars/Harry Potter/Indiana Jones soundtracks.

  • Timothy Lines and Andrew Marriner were probably on these parts. Not him. He hasn't been employed with them long enough.

  • Why are these comments being marked as negative? Chi-Yu hasn't been employed with the LSO long enough to have played on the Star Wars and Indiana Jones soundtracks from the 70s and early 80s. What's so negative about pointing that out? I swear I will never understand why the YouTube community is so resistant to accepting facts.

  • They're resistant because the LSO did record the soundtracks for the movies in the early 2000s.

  • And as I said, it is likely that Timothy Lines and Andrew Marriner the 2 co-principals of the orchestra at that time were on those parts. I know, because I was there in London in 2000, and Chi-Yu was playing auxiliary 3rd filling in on asst. principal if/when Marriner jumped ship and Lines took over the principal parts. They're resistant because they don't know what they're talking about.

  • Not everyone on the planet can speak English, you know. No reason to call him a faggot, faggot.

This guy can, though, rather well (no Chinese accent).

  • dunno why he's speaking cantonese. it's clear his english is better than his canto. It's a bit pointless really. plus no-one can understand.

  • I believe it is posted.. search around :3

    i was just watching it.

  • Awesome, it's Chi-Yu Mo of the LSO, however, I can't understand what he's saying. Could someone post an English translation?

  • There's an English version posted as well as this one. I just noticed it in the related video's section.
