I noticed that the contabassoon part in Beethoven's fifth is nothing other than the double-bass part. I have always wondered if it is really playable on a contrabassoon, or whether it requires a virtuoso player to play it. I wouldn't say the contrabassoon is a horrible instrument. I like Kalevi Aho's contrabassoon concerto very much. I also find Stravinsky uses the contrabassoon to great effect in the Rite of Spring. But it seems that for a long time, it was used mainly to double the basses.
@Littlebocco If you look close.. his left hand IS higher than his right. either the image is, A: Flipped somehow, or B: His contrabassoon is made differently. You'll notice that the bell is on the left hand side of the instrument.. not the right.

What a horrible instrument, I think one day some bassoonist was a very very person so in order to punish the guy and all other bassoonists, God gave some instrument manufacturer the idea of building a Contrabassoon and it is how some people are now punished to play that instrument.
