@isthisnameabittolong E Company was pinned down because they were following the orders that Lt. Dyke gave them. I Company was coming in from a different direction than E Company was. However, neither company had a way to communicate with one another the change of plan when the assault started. Spiers went to I Company and relayed the plan to them. He could've stayed with I Company and fought his way back to E Company, but instead he ran back to his man to finish the fight with them.

Once he had crossed the German line they probably didn't know what to do and decided it was safer to let him run through their lines.

The truth is most people can't hit a moving target without a lot of luck. A true born warrior like Spears probably knew that the combination of surprise and speed would keep him safe. Since he had gigantic balls of solid steel and a decisive temperament, he coolly made his move to link up and give orders to his cut off men. You can train and train a soldier but that sort of war-sense is inborn, not made.
