Kate Hudson is golden and perfect at this role!!! This movie shows us something we need to work together to bring back rock n roll and we could live this lifestyle today it's Kesha Katy perry and my balls won't ever drop beiber! If we bring back rock n roll this would be America today!!!!!!!!!
Penny Lane....yeah, kind of impossible not to adore her, in spite of her flaws. This is the only scene where she really wakes up and sees the misery of the life she leads. Great acting.
FardNargle and all you other cowards who claim you want to live this movie...WAKE UP!!! I was there, I did this, I had this experience....If you want it, make it happen! Take risks! Sweet? Where do you get off? Where do you get sweet? I am dark and mysterious, and pissed off! And I could be very dangerous to all of you! You should know that about me... I am the enemy!
I agree with the other posts. This scene alone was worth the Oscar nomination she received for this role. Sadly, there are very few American actresses who can inhabit a role like Kate Hudson did with Penny Lane. Great movie, great script. The only miss surrounding this movie was Oscar's overlook of Phillip Seymour Hoffman's performance.
I never heard anything about Kirsten Dunst having the Penny Lane role, but I did hear Sarah Polley (The lead actress in the "Dawn of the Dead" remake). She's a brilliant screenwriter--I think she would have been great at the role, but Kate Hudson really did a spectacular job--especially good considering I can't stand her in every other role, and yet I LOVE her in this one.
She reminds me of every girl in highschool that could get the guy she wanted, yet there was that one guy...truly, madly, deeply in love with her yet he never got her.
god kate hudson it was all right there, you could have been absolutely epic! but you went ahead and tried to emulate your mothers carear of chick flicks and it all went terribly wrong! this scene reminds of jonie mitchell both sides now " and if you care dont let em know, dont give yourself away" she is brillaint and this would have been the perfect platform for her if she hadnt picked such crappy roles here after!
To me it's a very emotional scene where she is at her most vulnerable and she tries to cover it up with a joke. rawipa below has it right, her eyes speak better than words and that's why it's such a great scene.
@asspoopqq what kind of beer is to ease the pain in the real world if it was an expensive beer. Im just glad she's not AROD'S groupie in the real world.
@ReklawRemix Kate was so good as penny, makes u think she must of been a groupie at one time in her life, excuse me i mean a band aide. they could of showed more of her when she was aiding the band
Oh, it was really good movie. Patrick Fugit showed great acting. I never found Kate Hudson serious actress, (especially after all those stupid romantic comedies) but I changed my mind after watching this film. She deserves much more serious roles. Kate was amazing here. Billy Crudup, Frances McDormand, Jason Lee, Anna Paquin, Fairuza Balk and Zooey Deschanel were no less impressive.
The german dubbing is so bad, because Fugit's voice is too soft and "pissed off" sounds much better than "stinksauer" ("angepisst" would be better although stinksauer is the right translation) :D
That would have been an interesting casting but I agree with you. I love this movie sooo much. I came of age in the 70's and it really captures those awkward teen years I rmbr where our (now Classic) Rock albums were our lives, our rebellion, and everything to us. I think Nancy Wilson did an incredible job picking out the soundtrack songs her and we all grew up with.
@gethighnescape Noway there is only one amazing Penny Lane.... All the actors in this movie were brilliant. Lady Goodman <3 Only two movies have ever made me cry- this one (tiny dancer scene) and one other.... A MUST SEE MOVIE...
@gethighnescape I agree. She was GREAT in 'Elizabethtown' (also a fine Cameron Crowe film) but she would not have been as good of a Penny Lane as Kate was. :-)
Alas the mystery of the provocative young damsel, yielded to the fully unformed vixen and insecure prima Donna within (her demise and rescue buy our hero). How deeply a beautiful damsel thus would it be, to sanctify the forlorn heart? Would it not, that the substance of Penny Lane be imperiled by the emerging wisdom of a girl, who through reckless abandon, learns that her closest advocates are not just the beneficence of visceral fortune but the vicissitudes of her ironically ill gotten gains?
@gethighnescape I agree that Hudson was perfect in this role, but Dunst has shown depth and a mysterious quality in several performances (The Virgin Suicides, Marie Antoinette, All Good Things, Eternal Sunshine). I've never seen an actress interweave mystery, beauty and melancholy emotion in a single performance in such a way.
I completely relate. I wish I lived in this movie to actually be friends with William and expierence a conversation with Penny Lane.
Kate Hudson, I agree needs to get out of this horrible acting streak she's in. This movie is proof she's capable of sooo much more!! And Fugit, he's amazing at this role. He reads the role perfectly. Slightly reserved and unsure and awkward and sweet... he's actually really good
@FardNargle Yea, me too, I was born in the wrong decade, like any other kid on here who appreciates and loves rocker/hippie music would say. Those days looked fun, but I still love my life, don't get the wrong idea. :)
@FardNargle Don't be sad, I'd like to have a 15 year old graduate from high school, travel with a band before I was born, and make the cover of Rolling Stone! You're not alone...
Mr.FilmFreak, I totally agree with everything you said. However, I think Patrick Fugit's character is supposed to be timid and script-like. He is a posterboy, law-abiding teenager thrown into a lifestyle with tenacious, carefree rockers. But, I really did like your review, most accurate!!
I absolutely adore Kate Hudson's performance in this film. I have to say though, I'm really disappointed in the direction her career has headed since this was released. Hopefully she can turn in another good, if not great, performance in 'Nine' coming out later this year. I definitely know she has talent in her. This scene alone proves it. Patrick Fugit on the other hand...not such a big fan of him in this. He's forced, and like he's reading lines from a script. Completely overshadowed here.
I agree; her Penny Lane is possibly my favorite female performance of all time, and her deeply poor choice of projects is distressing because this scene proves her depth and ability as an actress to even surpass her mother.
Here's hoping she'll have a great comeback in the near future.
You are completely right. kate Hudson was beyond incredible in this movie, can't believe she starred in such crap afterwards. "Fool's Gold"? "Bride Wars"? Serioulsy? I don't think Patrick Fugit was bad, he just wasn't great. Didn't take away from the movie though, thank goodness.
Great question at the end from Penny Lane--"what kind of beer?" When your sold out, acceptance & humor is best defense...can relate completely...that is me...
Man what is it about this movie that just hits ya!!?? Its awesome!! heres my take.... penny lane was in love with music... the spirit of the music of that time. Russel was music personified. It was only natural for Penny lane to fall in love with a physical, tangible, symbolic representation of the music. If ever russle held penny lane, it would have been like the music was holding her.

This bit stood out in the film for me. Amazing acting here (No I'm not being sarcastic). Just watch Hudson's face, body language etc from 2:30 onwards..
Wrong! This is an EPIC film in the sense that this is one of the best films I have ever seen. It completely captures the magic that music.
.. Nobody will care, but I feel like crying. I split up with my boyfriend today and I think it was the biggest mistake I ever made. I still love him. This hurts so much,
This is the BEST! Kate Hudson scene ever, i fell in love with her after i watched this movie but this scene is what got me the most when she asked what kind of beer? I almost cried...lol
2:10 on wonderful scene. She's so vulnerable.

I LOVE THIS PART ...great movie ..watch it like 100 times..and the thing is.. it's not even a war or epic film ..

Wrong! This is an EPIC film in the sense that this is one of the best films I have ever seen. It completely captures the magic that music.
.. Nobody will care, but I feel like crying. I split up with my boyfriend today and I think it was the biggest mistake I ever made. I still love him. This hurts so much,

My favorite scene! Kate Hudson gave one of the best performances I've ever seen. And I defy you to watch her from 2:17 on and disagree.
