  • Classic

  • How I love this scene! "What kind of beer?" It's a killer scene from one of the most amazing movies of all times. Love it

  • This is Kate's defining role hands down...

  • She's amazing here.

  • Kate Hudson is golden and perfect at this role!!! This movie shows us something we need to work together to bring back rock n roll and we could live this lifestyle today it's Kesha Katy perry and my balls won't ever drop beiber! If we bring back rock n roll this would be America today!!!!!!!!!

  • Dumb.

  • Penny for every guy!

  • Penny Lane....yeah, kind of impossible not to adore her, in spite of her flaws. This is the only scene where she really wakes up and sees the misery of the life she leads. Great acting.

  • Creo que yo también soy muy dulce para el rock n' roll

  • FardNargle and all you other cowards who claim you want to live this movie...WAKE UP!!! I was there, I did this, I had this experience....If you want it, make it happen! Take risks! Give up the security of your boring job and your crap apartment and your small-minded paranoia over what others will think, and make it happen! If you're not willing to do this, just stop whining and shut the f**k up!

  • this movie rocks..other scene that I really like it's with russel and william..russel comes to william and just say's "just make us look cool"..really good scene

  • I am really just dying to see Kate Hudsom do a part like this again.

  • Kate Hudson's finest moment. God she was angelic

  • what kind of beer? :(

  • besides the point... did you guys notice "goldie" there??? amizing what we put out is it not??? god love the child ...and so do you....

  • verdammt das ende könnte anderst augehen!!! omg voll die laune verdorben!!!

  • to fardNargle~~~I could live this movie everyday of my life as well, and I love this scene, it's broken her heart, but she blows it off and ask whast kind of beer!!!!~~the best times of my life were the 70's everything since then has been a clusterfuck, camerson Crowe is complete genious when it comes to pickin his movies~~~~and Kirsten Dunst would have sucked as Penny, only Kate could and did pull it off!!!!!! just a person who loves and understands music!!!! glad to meet u~~xoxo

  • Patrick Fugit channeling his inner William Shatner lol. But this is the greatest rock movie ever made!!

  • Is the guy in this the same guy that played Evra Von in Cirque Du Freak?!

he sure sounds and looks like it!!!!

  • The moment where she's wiping her tears away...wow. How real.

  • @meyouandthesky I think that's when I fell in love with Kate Hudson and this movie for real.

  • @meyouandthesky I cry everytime.

  • Those two actors should be proud of themselves.

  • what kind of beer ? why it was Heinekin plus blow jobs for life for me ! now get to it, missy !

  • Sweet? Where do you get off? Where do you get sweet? I am dark and mysterious, and pissed off! And I could be very dangerous to all of you! You should know that about me... I am the enemy!

  • I fell in love with her 2:31 - 2:57

  • Penny is the baddest chick....she's worth way more!

  • Man on man, she looks like her mama! Goldie and Kate are both very talented. I wish Kate the best career ahead.

  • Every time i cry because of a guy.. I think of this scene..

  • I agree with the other posts. This scene alone was worth the Oscar nomination she received for this role. Sadly, there are very few American actresses who can inhabit a role like Kate Hudson did with Penny Lane. Great movie, great script. The only miss surrounding this movie was Oscar's overlook of Phillip Seymour Hoffman's performance.

  • what's the song playing behind it

  • Ahah aw, I love Patrick's hand action at "I am the Enemy" and the emphasis on the "I was there, I was there." This scene is so beautiful.

I agree with @TehMasta, his love for her is incredible.

  • Kate Hudson will never be good in another movie again.

  • @thefakephil I know, right? I look at movies like Bride Wars and think, damn, what happened to cool Penny Lane!

  • One of the sweetest scenes ever, and probably the best acting that Kate Hudson will ever achieve.

  • the enemy

  • the enemy..!!!!

  • "what kind of beer?" aah this is the best acting of the year. probably the past decade

  • I never heard anything about Kirsten Dunst having the Penny Lane role, but I did hear Sarah Polley (The lead actress in the "Dawn of the Dead" remake). She's a brilliant screenwriter--I think she would have been great at the role, but Kate Hudson really did a spectacular job--especially good considering I can't stand her in every other role, and yet I LOVE her in this one.

  • His love for her is unbelievable.

She reminds me of every girl in highschool that could get the guy she wanted, yet there was that one guy...truly, madly, deeply in love with her yet he never got her.

  • god kate hudson it was all right there, you could have been absolutely epic! but you went ahead and tried to emulate your mothers carear of chick flicks and it all went terribly wrong! this scene reminds of jonie mitchell both sides now " and if you care dont let em know, dont give yourself away" she is brillaint and this would have been the perfect platform for her if she hadnt picked such crappy roles here after!

  • I AM DARK AND MYSTERIOUS AND PISSED OFF!!! LOL

  • i was born in the wrong era . . . .

  • 'Im dark and mysterious, and PISSED OFF!'

  • What went wrong with Kate Hudson?

She was so amazing in this movie, but all she's been in recently are these inane chick-flicks.

  • @rainshinyday Maybe getting divorced from Christ Robinson?

  • "What kind of beer?"

cracks me up every singel time xD

  • @Blaandsaft

To me it's a very emotional scene where she is at her most vulnerable and she tries to cover it up with a joke. rawipa below has it right, her eyes speak better than words and that's why it's such a great scene.

  • @cerebain

Well, I realize that. Thanks for the clarification; even though, it wasn't really needed :)

  • her eyes speak better than words...

  • one of my favorite lines " he sold you to humble pie for 50 dollars and a case of beer".........." What kind of beer?" Sheer brilliance right there

  • @asspoopqq what kind of beer is to ease the pain in the real world if it was an expensive beer. Im just glad she's not AROD'S groupie in the real world.

  • 「ビールの銘柄は?」って聞いた瞬間、ペニーの美しさがはじけた

  • kate husdon won heaps of awards for this movie. was she good in this?

  • @Reklaw... she was BRILLIANT as Penny Lane! You'll laugh with her you'll cry with her...

  • ¨.. she was BRILLIANT as Penny Lane! You'll laugh with her you'll cry with her... ¨

Great! What do I have to do to sleep with her? ;)

  • @skepticoz Now that's a good one!

    Cheers..

    Seattle Mark

  • It was her best role ever

  • @ReklawRemix Kate was so good as penny, makes u think she must of been a groupie at one time in her life, excuse me i mean a band aide. they could of showed more of her when she was aiding the band

  • does anyone know the song thats playing at the end

  • When I was a kid I loved this movie. Watched it this year? OMG so SAD! Still love it but damn it Penny, William loves you open your eyes.

Terrific terrific movie for people of all ages, seeing as how I've enjoyed it on different levels.

  • Oh, it was really good movie. Patrick Fugit showed great acting. I never found Kate Hudson serious actress, (especially after all those stupid romantic comedies) but I changed my mind after watching this film. She deserves much more serious roles. Kate was amazing here. Billy Crudup, Frances McDormand, Jason Lee, Anna Paquin, Fairuza Balk and Zooey Deschanel were no less impressive.

  • my favourite scene :)

The german dubbing is so bad, because Fugit's voice is too soft and "pissed off" sounds much better than "stinksauer" ("angepisst" would be better although stinksauer is the right translation) :D

  • That's so sweet. XD

I mean, dark, mysterious and pissed off. XD

  • Kirsten Dunst was almost cast for Penny Lane but I don't think she could capture the mystery, depth and substance of Penny Lane that Kate brought on

  • That would have been an interesting casting but I agree with you. I love this movie sooo much. I came of age in the 70's and it really captures those awkward teen years I rmbr where our (now Classic) Rock albums were our lives, our rebellion, and everything to us. I think Nancy Wilson did an incredible job picking out the soundtrack songs her and we all grew up with.

    -Seattle Mark

  • @gethighnescape Noway there is only one amazing Penny Lane.... All the actors in this movie were brilliant. Lady Goodman <3 Only two movies have ever made me cry- this one (tiny dancer scene) and one other.... A MUST SEE MOVIE...

  • Alas the mystery of the provocative young damsel, yielded to the fully unformed vixen and insecure prima Donna within (her demise and rescue buy our hero). How deeply a beautiful damsel thus would it be, to sanctify the forlorn heart? Would it not, that the substance of Penny Lane be imperiled by the emerging wisdom of a girl, who through reckless abandon, learns that her closest advocates are not just the beneficence of visceral fortune but the vicissitudes of her ironically ill gotten gains?

  • @skepticoz shut the fuck up shakespeare

  • @gethighnescape and Kirsten is no were near as attractive as Kate.

  • @gethighnescape ~That's not a question at all :))) IT's obvious that with Kirsten, the movie would be a typical soapy movie :)

  • @gethighnescape

    Agreed

Kate Hudson was great in this,

Too bad her movies are frickin TERRIBLE nowadays

  • @gethighnescape I agree that Hudson was perfect in this role, but Dunst has shown depth and a mysterious quality in several performances (The Virgin Suicides, Marie Antoinette, All Good Things, Eternal Sunshine). I've never seen an actress interweave mystery, beauty and melancholy emotion in a single performance in such a way.

  • @gethighnescape yea def..kirsten dunst is smokin hot..but kate hudson is the sexiest chick to me for some reason that i can't even put my finger on

  • @gethighnescape I think she could have, she did that in the Virgin Suicides

  • I completely relate. I wish I lived in this movie to actually be friends with William and expierence a conversation with Penny Lane.

Kate Hudson, I agree needs to get out of this horrible acting streak she's in. This movie is proof she's capable of sooo much more!! And Fugit, he's amazing at this role. He reads the role perfectly. Slightly reserved and unsure and awkward and sweet... he's actually really good

  • I want to live in this movie. Sad but true.

  • @FardNargle I 'feel' exactly what you're saying.

  • @FardNargle Yea, me too, I was born in the wrong decade, like any other kid on here who appreciates and loves rocker/hippie music would say. Those days looked fun, but I still love my life, don't get the wrong idea. :)

  • @FardNargle Me too...

  • @FardNargle Don't be sad, I'd like to have a 15 year old graduate from high school, travel with a band before I was born, and make the cover of Rolling Stone! You're not alone...

  • @FardNargle God for fuck's sake I WANT IT TO. Especially in the "Golden God" part hahaha

  • naw u douche tis kate hudson

  • Mr.FilmFreak, I totally agree with everything you said. However, I think Patrick Fugit's character is supposed to be timid and script-like. He is a posterboy, law-abiding teenager thrown into a lifestyle with tenacious, carefree rockers. But, I really did like your review, most accurate!!

  • i am dark and mysterious and pissed off!

  • best movie ever

  • I absolutely adore Kate Hudson's performance in this film. I have to say though, I'm really disappointed in the direction her career has headed since this was released. Hopefully she can turn in another good, if not great, performance in 'Nine' coming out later this year. I definitely know she has talent in her. This scene alone proves it. Patrick Fugit on the other hand...not such a big fan of him in this. He's forced, and like he's reading lines from a script. Completely overshadowed here.

  • I agree; her Penny Lane is possibly my favorite female performance of all time, and her deeply poor choice of projects is distressing because this scene proves her depth and ability as an actress to even surpass her mother.

Here's hoping she'll have a great comeback in the near future.

  • You are completely right. kate Hudson was beyond incredible in this movie, can't believe she starred in such crap afterwards. "Fool's Gold"? "Bride Wars"? Serioulsy? I don't think Patrick Fugit was bad, he just wasn't great. Didn't take away from the movie though, thank goodness.

  • I MUCH prefer Penny Flame!!

    \m/ \m/ \m/

  • Great question at the end from Penny Lane--"what kind of beer?" When your sold out, acceptance & humor is best defense...can relate completely...that is me...

  • Kate is perfection in this scene. I love the way she just brushes it off like that (even though it hurts). I wish I was like Penny Lane.

  • hmm i don't understand why she doesn't do any quality movies anymore...

i guess she really just likes romantic comedies.

  • 2:32-2:56... best 24 seconds of acting I've ever seen.

  • kate hudson's best acting right here

her silence and laugh at the end just says everything about her character

  • I love this movie! Kate Hudson was awesome and this scene is one of my favs! :)

  • Patrick? no William xD

  • Patrick fugit is the actor who plays william.

  • Oh the actor ok i understand

  • I am dark and mysterious lol

  • what song is that going over the bridge?

  • sold her to humble pie

  • haha i am the enemy! the best thing ever!

  • What is the song played at the end?

  • She's a major actress man. She was totally believable thought the hole movie. 10+ ^_^

  • Believable in this, fantastic in this....

But none of her other movies stand up to to her role in this movie.

  • this scene is my fave!!

  • there is no penny lane i dont even know your real name haha rimes i love this movie

  • This scene makes me cry

  • Oh man, when she does that look and says "What kind of beer?" absolute classic!!

  • her hair remind me of robert plant

  • im in love with penny lane lol

  • "What kind of beer?"

    That's just a great scene.

  • i am dark and mysterious and pissed off...

  • Man what is it about this movie that just hits ya!!?? Its awesome!! heres my take.... penny lane was in love with music... the spirit of the music of that time. Russel was music personified. It was only natural for Penny lane to fall in love with a physical, tangible, symbolic representation of the music. If ever russle held penny lane, it would have been like the music was holding her.

  • wow coxchin... i like your... err... "take"

  • Comment removed

  • I like that, I think your so right... But it was only an illusion, it never gave her the trueness she needed in her life, the "realness" it was all smoke on the water... that's what makes the ending so perfect isn't it? She was true to herself.

  • That is exactly what makes scene so powerful. Penny Lane is living in a dream world and when he told her about the "50 bucks and a case of beer" that was a slap of reality that she could not handle. So Penny Lane retreated back to her dream world.

  • This bit stood out in the film for me. Amazing acting here (No I'm not being sarcastic). Just watch Hudson's face, body language etc from 2:30 onwards..

  • pete mueller

  • yep, legit

  • Penny is so cute

  • gahhh

    amazingg scene. kate is perfectttt.

  • I LOVE THIS PART ...great movie ..watch it like 100 times..and the thing is.. it's not even a war or epic film ..

  • Wrong! This is an EPIC film in the sense that this is one of the best films I have ever seen. It completely captures the magic that music.

.. Nobody will care, but I feel like crying. I split up with my boyfriend today and I think it was the biggest mistake I ever made. I still love him. This hurts so much,

  • Comment removed

  • @IronicTables Agreed.

  • i am the enemy :D

  • such a great movie!!!,,,, this scene makes the whole movie,,,, pennny lanes climax breaking poiint,,,, sweeeet part!!

  • My favorite scene! Kate Hudson gave one of the best performances I've ever seen. And I defy you to watch her from 2:17 on and disagree.

  • Love this scene so much...makes me emotional every time.

  • i love KATE HUDSON!!!!

    she deserved an oscar heree...

  • This is the BEST! Kate Hudson scene ever, i fell in love with her after i watched this movie but this scene is what got me the most when she asked what kind of beer? I almost cried...lol

  • hes hott i love patrick great movie

  • "I am dark and mysterious and pissed off!!"

ahahaha! He's so cute when he's angry. :P

  • so sad

  • This is the greatest movie that has ever been made and this scene is one of the greatest scenes of all time. those eyes....she just wants to be loved

  • does anybody knows which song is that?

  • My heart broke when she started crying! I love this movie.

  • my favourite scene in the movie

  • Her love for russell is sad because she deserves better. the scene was so beautiful here.

  • Right at the end has to be one of the most beautiful shots I've ever seen in a movie

  • what kind of beer?

  • gosh it's so heartbreaking when she cries. =( This has to be one my favorite movies of all time. . .without a doubt! I love it so much.

  • KATE HUDSON IS MY MUSE !!!!!!!!! She has class ,she's beautiful ...Wow!! I've never seen a woman like her in my life....

but in real life ..... she's still looking for happiness....but she can't find it yet.

well.....Life is not like a movie

  • Great camera work here.

  • i think she did a great job on her very last line. acting like she didnt care but you could tell she did cuz the tears, yet she smiled. great job.

  • i have to do this scene tommorow for acting class. theres ALOT more text in the script than there is in this scene. they cut alot. interesting...
