This beautiful music should be the National Anthem for Scotland. I don`t like the present one .It`s too doleful . This music has all the romance of Scotland.

From a non-technical listener: Beautiful!!! This piece has made it's way around the world and no two artists that I have heard play it so far sound the same. That's folk/ethnic music. 5*
I've heard no one else better express the lilting Celtic musical nuance of this piece. Its simple sorrow makes it one of the most beautiful love songs, and Sr. Pirai captured it all. I wish I could express in Spanish my appreciation for this interpretation.
Who's the prat that said they were born and brought up in Scotland and objected to the disconstant note - go get a life - this is a Bolivian artisan of considerable quality who has chosen a work by a Scotsman to add to his repertoir, how immense is that for us Scots! Who cares if he adds or plays a note or two differently, it is yet another example of how we Scots have influenced the world - don't get down on it, get excited!
I agree with "the prat"! I think Pirio is one of the greatest guitarists I have heard, but I think he plays the lament too quickly and without sufficient breath between phrases....and the top note is too harsh. On all other YouTube tracks of his, I find his sensitivity of touch, superb...much like our very own Karin Schaupp.(Australia).
He is a very skilled artist, BUT every guitarist who plays this Lament by Neil Gow on Youtube is obviously playing from the same sheet music. The note that they all play at 0.46 (and repeated later) sounds so wrong! I grew up in Scotland and heard this played a thousand times (usually on the fiddle)and that discordant note was NOT there. Can some authentic Scottish fiddler please listen to this (preferably either Aly Bain, or Alasdair Fraser) and comment. Thanks.
@rearvumirror I couldn't agree more. When I first listened to this, I assumed he had hit a bum note accidentally , but it would appear he is actually playing the note intentionally.
As you say, a very skilled artist but that bum note ruins it for me ...l
Strange thing. That so called bum note actualy makes the whole peice for me. I hadn't heard the original before this one but after hearing it i thing this is the best version. Just my none biased opinion.
@murrmac That bum note must be written into the transcription for guitar, because all the guitar players I listened to so far seem to play it. It's either a mistake or it may have been meant as a grace note for the original fiddle version this was taken from. Certainly Neil Gow did not write it in.
Not withstanding, Pirai does a beautiful job of this, I'd love to play the fiddle along with him on this.
@rearvumirror I play this piece on fiddle and guitar. That part has a grace note that is a half tone flat (an F natural in the key of G) leading into the main note (an E). It is in the David Russell arrangement, and guitarists copy David's version. David grew up in Scotland and I am sure he knew the tune as played in the 'normal' manner. On fiddle this tune is played with ornamentation in lots of places. But I don't ever recall hearing it played with that flat grace note at that spot.
@rearvumirror , from Brasil, I keep listening this song again and again because of that note. I am sorry if you have a "puristic" point of view, but in my opinion the song played like Vaca did has a much larger audience.
@jvalentif So, by your reckoning we can rewrite Shakespeare's Hamlet, or Beethoven's Ninth symphony.
If Vaca had played this note as a grace note, it might be considered as interpretation and be acceptable, but the emphasis he gives it changes the whole character of Neil Gow's most famous Lament. This music is part of Scotland's heritage.
Would it be fine by you if we change the time signature of Barroso's "Aquarela do Brasil" to 3/4 time?
@rearvumirror , it has been done, brazilian music has been played in a variety of ways by everyone. If it is your National Anthem I understand you might not like it, but I understand this is a popular song. There are some peoplein Brasil that can´t accept the fact that Jobim´s music has been used in Coca Cola advertising, but Jobim himself was pretty happy with the results.
@rearvumirror I was going to comment on lack of reference to the arranger by the original poster of the clip. I assume it's David Russell's published arrangement. I point out that Russell is, like you a Scot, and he is certainly one of the world's finest and most respected concert guitarists. I make no judgment on the validity of your claim but suggest you take your concerns up with him.
@rearvumirror I listened to the original version and David Russell's version and have to say Russell's arrangement sounds so much better for that one note change. Pirai Vaca's version is beautiful. Franck Philippo does a couple of different versions on different guitars that both sound amazing.
Only Neil Gow can play the original as it was intended. Every one else just interprets it.
I'm from France and I found your version WONDERFUL. Maybe, you got a score somewhere? For myself I did my own version after the listening of the cd "message of the sea" of David Russell but, this is not the great level of interpretation you have. Congratulations. Franck

It's excellent, but I think that the sound of the melody is too sharp in some moments. Nevertheless it's a very heart-moving interpretation.
