@ChrisHenniker I can see it happening already, me and the lads are bang into the kinks, the jam, the who, everything! Give it a couple years everyone will be into it!
MrHandsinpocketgroover...Not much credibility coming from a whinny sounding, hooded, baby faced wanker. You wouldn't recognize balls if they were dangling in your face. (Or maybe you do).... ;-D
As a Yank it's cool to see a great UK band like The Jam cover a great song by an American soul legend Curtis Mayfield!!!! I like The Jam's songs but Curtis Mayfiled's version is the best of course!!!!
It's a great version of a most wonderful song and they did it in the style that fits The Jam. That's ultimately more interesting than a straight up 'tracing paper' copy.
The original is perfect, but why not, it sounded SHIT HOT!! Obviously not Weller fans do yourselves a favour, listen to his back catalogue and then comment!!!
@wellerp66 Can you tell me something about this band. I like this cover, but I don't think I remember this group. Thank goodness for the Internet--I'm getting a real Music Appreciation class.
@scribe56 get all mod cons and sound affects by the jam- both great albums- paul weller the singer/guitarist has become one of the most charted uk artists in history in the uk even to this day in his 50s his albums chart well into the top ten
@mjjcng8958 you should look for the tube live version of this cover where wellers vocals are lot more soulful. It still may not be Curtis Mayfield, but I doubt this cover would exist if he didnt love the orignal.
Curtis got the spirituality and mournfulness out of this song and Weller got the anger and energy. It doesn't hurt the song any to have two great and very different versions-- that's part of how you know that they're great songs.
look how some imbecile idiot attempted to type out the lyrics of this song while the singer was singing. message to the idiot: you arent a very good typer.
Holy shit....they totally tear it up in the best possible way.....am so glad i found this......it's not the Curtis Mayfield sound because it's The Jam and they totally play it with all the conviction and heart that Mayfield gave to his version. Very hard to pull off and they totally do. AWESoME!!
To the anal-retentive "purist" haters here: Get an enema and LIGHTEN UP! You guys must have some seriously tight sphincters. This fu**in' rocks! I like Curtis a lot, too, but this is a perfectly good way to perform the song. Curtis had a limited voice, or he might've sung it with more volume and authority, too. This takes a great song and picks up the pace, with great horns and the bass is superior to the original. And to say no one else can/should cover Mayfield or JB is mindless idol worship.
They are good...but certain bands just cant be covered...and Curtis is one of them. You cant do this song justice without those laid back funk rootes planted in 70s black america....and in people like Curtis or for another example James Brown.....they way they did the songs was far more important than if the music was played to perfection and a singer hit everynote perfectly...u cant fake soul. On the other hand..respect to this band and if their fans like the song..KEEP PLAYIN IT.
@bboyillscience Just "Good" ? .... An amazingly great tribute and cover to one of Paul Weller's influences. Can you honestly say you weren't impressed by their energy and wowed by this version performed by a "white British " band. Funk, Smunk......This band's soul and "funk" may be another color but just as relevant.
@viewmore100 uhhhh..I said they are good. Funk..smunk....lol. Everycover I ever heard of move on up has never moved me like the original. This is my OPINION of course heavily influenced because I'm a dancer. I respect your opinion...but your coming at me like I said they suck or something. Their color has nothing to do with it...I'm just saying that sound influenced by 60s-70s "black" america just made u move. I said I respect this band...I just like the percussion of the original better-peace
Pretty nimble bass from Foxton on this one for sure. With only one guitarist playing chords the whole way, it surely opens it up for a bassist to go free like that.
Great cover, it stands out. themusicdr makes the mistake to compare to original (see below). They are far too different to be compared and obviouslt Weller and Jam do honour Mayfield by creating a different version and not a cheesy rip off. Fucking awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Saw them play this live at the Micheal Sobell centre nr Finsbury Park in the early eighties. The horn section had a french horn which added a beautiful 3rd voice to the arrangement. Pure gold.
W/a name like The Jam it's got be good jam... This is THIS is the modern world's got so much soul it can't help but keep on wishing, pushing, to keep on keepin on... Take a tip: take a trip. Look out world, we're getting over under sideways down & we shall overcome, w/horns belting & hearts melting & dancing in the street to the beat surrender...
