@Thirdrepublic1 I feel like I'm fighting a loosing fight against stupidity here, but seriously, it's the purpose that dicates the method. With Alien, a creature that becomes more effective when acting unnaturally, and is used sparingly and only in darkness, it's pretty easy and logical to do with puppets. But when you do a whole film about blue cat people running in daylight, you just can't do it with makeup and animatronics.
@Thirdrepublic1 And also, Avatar is pretty good most of the time hiding the CGI. If you can't enjoy the visuals, in this case the problem is in the viewer. Not the film.
Ok here is a reason why Practical effects are better than CGI. Lighting. n some films, lighting can make the CGI effectlook fake. Here because it is physical, it can be made scarier when less is shown.
@TheBoomViper Cameron changed the design for practical reasons, moreso than artistic ones. I think (although I'm not sure) that he mentions it in this particular documentary. The clear piece over the head was eliminated because Cameron thought it would be too fragile for the kind of abuse he was going to put the performers in the alien costumes through; the structure of the body was also altered (costumes were simplified) to enable the performers more freedom of movement.
Maybe, but in the Aliens FAQ at JamesCameronOnline[dot]com it is explained that the xenomorphs in Aliens had ridges because they had fully matured. The drone in Alien didn't have enough time to fully mature to that stage.
actually the alien in the first movie had that rugged skeletical head too, except it was covered with that transparent dome, so in here they're actually the same just without the transparent dome.

Didn't like Cameron's design changes to the Alien, particularly the head. I was glad they went back to the smooth look for Alien 3.

@jjobie the alien warrior is different. isn't alien drone...

@jjobie
Cameron's designs were those of a fully matured drone. What's your problem again?

the creature in the first ALien had a soft head, in Aliens they have rugged skeletical head
siralucard19 1 year ago
I dont think it was necessarily "soft", but it was smooth. I actually like the first design better but the 2nd one is pretty cool too.
