  • Anyone knows the year this aired?

  • I don't think anyone will intelligently argue the fact that Intel has the fastest consumer-level processors on the market. However, these processors always suffer on a bang-per-buck comparison. By and large, looking at performance and power consumption per dollar, AMD processors will give you the better deal. However if you have the cash and you must have the fastest system possible you must go with Intel at this point.

  • ** Oh, and I have one more thing to say to you Intel haters.

I'm not trying to say that AMD processors are HORRIBLE. But many of them simply cant live up to a top of the line Intel processor such as the Core 2 Extreme.

Many people use AMD processors because they're cheaper. Although that's true, keep this in mind... You get what you pay for.

Top of the line performance = Lots of money.

  • AMDs are real processors.

    So are VIAs and ARMs.

  • I agree, Intel FTW

  • AMD is better

  • Not in my opinion it is. I've had nothing but problems with AMD. Issues with heat and all kinds of other shit.

The processor I'm putting in my machine could smoke an AMD. Especially if I overclock it.

    :-)

  • Yeah I agree with the fact that you are putting in a Core 2 Extreme but all I am saying is if you compare Intel Core 2 Quad at 2.5GHz and the AMD Phenom X4 at 2.5GHz, the AMD has almost the same performance at a much lower price so for your money AMD is the better deal, that is all I am saying but there is obviously a reason Apple chose Intel instead of AMD.

  • I think the main reason Apple chose Intel is because they can cram a full power Core 2 Duo into stuff like the Mac Mini and not have to worry about heat. AMD is better value but intel is overall the best performer.

Now... i wonder if that Core 2 Extreme can get my Oatmeal right.... two trys and it's still too runny =(

  • I'll never use AMD again. I've had nothing but problems with them, mostly temperature issues.

I had an old Athlon XP system and it was almost impossible for me to keep the damn thing below 150° even with the best CPU cooler available. The system was constantly locking up because it ran so hot.

After I switched to Intel, the temperature rarely ever even rose above 100°. Now I use Intel exclusively, fuck AMD. I don't care if they're cheaper.

  • And DragonTamer is right. Intel is probably the best performer. Build an AMD system with the same specs as mine and set the two machines side by side. Then crank up a game like Crysis or something and compare the performance. You'd probably be blown away by my system. This machine is very powerful.

  • Oh shit, I just realized something. I need to get a bigger power supply! The one I have is only about 700W. I don't know how the hell it's managing to power all the shit I have in the system. I think it's overloaded, it's only a matter of time before it craps out on me.

I think I'll get a 1000W Thermaltake Toughpower. The damn thing costs $300, but hey, I go with the best baby.

  • you seem to like spending money lol

I could cook an egg on my dads AMD the day it died. They run way too hot and the have no thermal protection.

  • Yeah. When it comes to computers I spend some cash.

And yes, you can literally cook an egg on an Athlon. I've actually seen it done before. I shit you not. Those Athlons can fry at about 500+ degrees.

And I certainly can get a lot more than 60FPS in Crysis. Anyone can if they know how to do it. You just need to disable vertical sync on the video card. Vertical sync will limit your framerate to match the refresh rate on the monitor. That's why you only get 60. Turn it off!!

    :-)

  • Yeah, but unless you're just trying to see how high you can get, turning off v-sync is kind of pointless. Plus you can get tearing if you turn really fast and happen to catch it between a screen draw.

  • Yeah, v-sync doesn't really make a very significant difference. I enable antialiasing and anisotropic filtering, but that actually decreases the framerate by a small amount. Not a huge drop, but I do it anyway.

If antialiasing and filtering is on, it can make the edges of objects appear jagged and blurry. If you disable it your picture is crystal clear. But like I said, the framerate will drop a little bit.

  • Oops, I had that the other way around. If it's ON, you have better picture quality. If it's off, it looks blurry

  • Yeah, except in the magic reverse world of Age of Conan where your frame rate actually increases with antialiasing on due to bad game coding.

  • Try a silverstone strider 1000wt

  • Well god, I ended up getting a 1200W Thermaltake Toughpower. I love it. It's a very nice PS. It runs quietly and it's very reliable.

  • i prefer intel because u get more power at a cheaper price

  • Intels also run cooler :-)

  • very true

  • i remember when intel ran insanely hot and used a TON of power, and AMD was the coolrunning low power chip... what was that? 3 years ago?

  • Well not anymore. I had an Athlon system with an average temperature of 140° F or higher.

    I'm now running a Pentium 4 with a constant temperature of about 80-90° F

I had Thermaltake fans with huge copper heatsinks on both processors. So I don't remember what the temperature was with the original fans/heatsinks that came with the CPUs.

  • my Pentium D does run hot but i think i need to reseat my heatsink. It idles at about 60C. I get a Q6600 in a few weeks and i think it's going to run alot cooler.

  • I'm about to get rid of my fans and put in a watercooling kit after I rebuild my system.

I'm about to get a 3GHz Core 2 Extreme. This is gonna kick ass. It's a quad-core processor with 12MB cache!! It's gonna cost me about $1,100 though. And that doesn't include the price of the motherboard and memory.

I've got nearly $3,000 in the bank, but I'm about to drain my account. LOL

  • yeah add on the $200 for the rest of the system to keep up with that CPU and there goes your money...and your bank account...

  • Money's not a very big deal. My wife is an attorney and we live in a $280,000 house. So I think I can afford to build a pretty good system.

  • well in that case go ahead and build a dual quad core system... if you can find a mobo that will take two Core 2 Extremes

  • I've already looked for one but I can't find a board that will take Dual Core2 processors. I'm thinking about getting the Asus Striker Extreme.

I need something that will support SLI and SATA II. I have two 1GB XFX 9800 GX2 cards. Luckily I already have them payed for. Those cards cost me a fortune. $600 a piece!!

But well worth it. The 9800 GX2 is a badass card! I've compared it with a few others and I think it's currently the best gaming card in production right now.

  • ..... $1200 on video cards?!?! $1300 on the processer....and what 4 rapters in RAID 0? I'l gve you $3000 for it... that should cover most of it. =)

  • Oh no, it isn't for sale! $3,000 wont cover shit! Those were only the prices for my CPU and video cards. That doesn't include my other stuff!

Asus Striker II Extreme mobo ($349)

    4GB Corsair Dominator DDR3 memory ($569)

Sound Blaster X-Fi Elite Pro ($250)

    700Watt Creative GigaWorks 7.1 speakers ($430)

    24" Viewsonic widescreen LCD ($379)

Plus the 2 video cards are $600 each.

And I'm not using Raptors. I use Seagate Barracudas. They're actually twice as fast as Raptors because they're SATA II.

  • That would cover 3 complete rebuilds for me. :) I normally upgrade my system about every two years. I fell further behind with my Pentium D setup because I didn't have much of a reason for upgradeing. (I used the comp for schoolwork mostly) But for the past 6 months my computer has been horrible at everything. I get about 2FPS in Supreme Commander and i'm not going to bother with Crysis.

  • LOL. I don't think I'll ever build another machine again after all the money I put into this one. I don't give a shit if this system goes obsolete tomorrow. Fuck keeping up with the latest technology.

This computer is good enough for me. It runs like a dream. Crysis is no problem for this machine, believe me. It can run just about any game at lightning fast speed.

The "Ultimate Gaming Machine" that Pat is talking about here doesn't have shit on my system. That's a guarantee.

  • I think the video cards might already be obsolete :(

I heard the GXT series should be better than the GX2 i also heard the 9800GTX should've been better than the 8800GTX and it's just barely...

I'm just getting a Q6600 with 4GB of DDR2 1066 2 250GB HDDs in raid 0 800 Watt PSU and a 9800GTX possibly 2. It's not top of the line but it will do what i want it to do for 2 years... then i upgrade again ect. ect. The case Antec 1200 and the PSU might be good for my next build. over letter limit:(

  • That doesn't surprise me at all. It's impossible to keep up with the latest technology. We all know that.

It's okay though. I'm very satisfied with these video cards. I don't care if they're already obsolete. They deliver awesome performance. They're good enough for me.

After considering the amount of money I've put into this machine, it will probably be a while before I do any more upgrading. Although I may need to get a bigger power supply here pretty soon.

  • yeah they should be plenty for anything out there. Maybe you can get more than 60FPS in Crysis lol

  • im rather happy with my setup i have a 7950gt. oc. vid card < nvidia 512 mb > a amd 2.4 gig prossesor and 3 gigs of ram

  • this is kinda old

  • They also had one on AOTS that was covered by Sean Baby and Kevin P.

  • I miss SS :P
