Racial resentment? You are aware the show takes place just after slaves were freed, yes? Is it unreasonable for characters who were just recently enslaved to be angry at the people who had enslaved them? Are the slaves supposed to beg their owners not to feel guilty about treating them like property?

Every time I watch the show I catch what IS obviously a major theme of the show which is the resentment blacks feel towards whites if you can't see that your head is up your ass

@texantillidie10001 Comparing the feelings and actions of people within 5 years of the end of the War Between the States to today is really not applicable. Elam's feelings towards Bohannon would likely be those of a freed slave and a former slave owner at the time.

At the time the show takes place, the nation hadn't even really started to heal yet. It's partly why the era is so fascinating, historically.

If that's all you're getting from the show, you're missing the development of Cullen's and Elam's racial awareness, the increasing confidence in Ms. Bell, the longing in Durrant, and the pure-D evil of the Swede...and half a dozen other characters who're changing a bit at a time, as the weeks go on. I hope you're just trying to be cool and not really as shallow as your post indicates.

@916mjones So easy to say. And in fact I do, and I do. Name a show that is more realistic. Most westerns are so ill-set and ill-acted and ill-costumed. They don't show the struggle and the hardship. The mud and the squalor is very well represented in this show. Take Gunsmoke, or even Deadwood where women in dresses are so common and walk around so easily. This show even shows how ridiculous that would be.
