John Petrucci is the greatest guitarist at alternate picking. He alternate picks almost everything. He can alternate pick some things that most other guitarists can barely sweep.
And if you think he doesn't do any legato, listen to the guitar/keyboard harmony part before the keyboard solo on "In the Name of God" by Dream Theater. He plays about 560 notes in 40 seconds with only picking maybe 10 times.
P.S.: Stop to send me stupid message like this. I know Petrucci had written beautiful song and that sometimes use legatos, but he isn't accurate like Gilbert... Ok

im a die hard petrucci fan and i can say whole heartedly steve vai is a better player and musician. vai is unique. petrucci uses too many fifths and he plays extreme too much vai is a composer and has way better dynamics. but still i listen to petrucci more. i think he appeals to teens more.
yeah i think JP's much better than SV, Vai just puts absolutely crappy 'american' riffs down all the time, and is generally a douche. Transcribing music isn't all that hard, that's pretty much half the grade of GCSE music which i did at 14-15, it can see how it might seem wowing to someone without much technical knowledge (hell i don't really, that's how easy it is)

But Petrucci's sound isnt done justice by the recording, if you check out the scenes from a memory album ull hear some of the nicest tones out there, petrucci is a very complete guitarist and his solos in general are very tastful, I dont exactly have the experience in terms of age but I am Grade 8 guitar if that counts for anthing! hahahah suppose it all comes down to taste anyway.

I'm not disagreeing with your choice of Beck, Clapton, Hendrix, etc., and I'm not even saying that Petrucci is better than any of them. His place is in Dream Theater, not in a solo career like Vai...and Dream Theater's ability as a band is what I'm arguing about...not how impressive Petrucci's stuff is. If you want to hear even better phrasing (besides some old fart from the allman brothers whose blues phrasing abilities were surpassed years ago), check out guitarist Dave Martone.

Train Of Though was the album I was referring to. Can't see how you can consider those other albums as metal. Especially Six Degrees. The only song on that album that remotely resembles the metal genre would be The Glass Prison. The guitar isn't very heavy in most of the other songs. Especially the acoustic ones.

John petrucci has been playing amazing guitarwork in dream theater for over 20 years, not kidding. This band has over 25 albums. In the videos you are referring to he had his guitars custom made by ibanez, but lately Ive noticed he uses peavey. Im guessing peavey has sponsored him now.

Petrucci is good but steve vai is so much better. Vai use to transcribe music from instrument to instrument and I think that is amazing at 17. John is good but Vai has more feeling and Soul than John. Rock on

GawdMachine u have alot of experience there so im not gonna argue!!! But Petrucci's sound isnt done justice by the recording, if you check out the scenes from a memory album ull hear some of the nicest tones out there, petrucci is a very complete guitarist and his solos in general are very tastful, I dont exactly have the experience in terms of age but I am Grade 8 guitar if that counts for anthing! hahahah suppose it all comes down to taste anyway.

Why people feel the need to argue over who is better and who is worse i dont know. The whole point of music is to make people feel it, it doesnt matter if its dream theatre that gets you going, or pantera or blink 182. What matters is that you listen to it, and you feel it. Dream Theatre is neither metal, prog-rock or even anything close to music.., it is self-congratulatory, reheated, leftover crap from the Van Halen shred era...& his tone is just godawful. Chet Atkins would destroy this guy with 2 fingers & an acoustic guitar. Please kids, you could really do much better for modern guitar heroes. It's sad that this actually impresses anybody.

There's no reason why I shouldn't be able to say that Dream Theater's material isn't well-orchestrated or that it has good taste. Petrucci's phrasing is better than most, he just plays it faster...you however, are ignorant enough to see him as just another "shred" guy and obviously can't hear phrasing at its best. Even if you just don't like prog...DON'T insult it as not being music. Get out of here dipshit.

Prog? You mean like Yes, Rush, Kansas, Dixie Dregs, King Crimson? Sperm Theatre has nothing on any of these bands. Shred?!? You mean like Yngwie Malmsteen, Frank Gambale or Steve Vai? He can't hold a candle to any of them. & "phrasing at it's best" comes from the greats like Page, Clapton, Beck, Hendrix, George Harrison, Brian May, Mick Ronson, David Gilmore etc., if any shredders had good phrasing it was Vai & Yngwie.

I'm not a fan of shred in general, just the Dream Theater stuff, which I would define as modern prog rock. I'm not knocking on any of the bands you mentioned, but you can't possibly sit there and say Petrucci has no phrasing abilities...its what makes him great, not the fact that he shreds. Sure some stuff may come off as a little virtuostic, but he still shines with his voicings/phrases in general! I'm a jazz dude myself, so I know when I hear good phrasing.

I'm not disagreeing with your choice of Beck, Clapton, Hendrix, etc., and I'm not even saying that Petrucci is better than any of them. His place is in Dream Theater, not in a solo career like Vai...and Dream Theater's ability as a band is what I'm arguing about...not how impressive Petrucci's stuff is. If you want to hear even better phrasing (besides some old fart from the allman brothers whose blues phrasing abilities were surpassed years ago), check out guitarist Dave Martone.

Train Of Though was the album I was referring to. Can't see how you can consider those other albums as metal. Especially Six Degrees. The only song on that album that remotely resembles the metal genre would be The Glass Prison. The guitar isn't very heavy in most of the other songs. Especially the acoustic ones.

Dude, get over yourself. I too wish I could be as good a musician as he. But don't bash him for his talent and hard work with his instrument. Petrucci isn't all shred by any means. Listen to something like the guitar solo in Dream Theater's "Lines in the Sand." Hell, you might learn something...
BTW...no one ever mentions anything about the lyrics he writes for DT. He's really an amazing and educated lyricist.

John petrucci has been playing amazing guitarwork in dream theater for over 20 years, not kidding. This band has over 25 albums. In the videos you are referring to he had his guitars custom made by ibanez, but lately Ive noticed he uses peavey. Im guessing peavey has sponsored him now.

Liquid tension experiment but I think that was just a 2 CD deal that they got together to make. I havne't heard of any other LTE stuff happening lately. JP's been busy with Vai and Satriani on the G3 tour.
