I bet their passion for each other until this day is unique...dozens of couples would dream to have that some day...even seeing one another only a day or another
@sirbrek1 Wow - am I sorry to hear your thoughts in my head. I've been going through a mid-life crisis, 57, my heart crying for my youth. But it wasn't all good times In fact, most of it was pretty bad. So there I am, brushing my teeth, thinking of the bumper stickers "there are no do-overs" and "life is not a dress rehearsal. Why aren't you as alive now as then? You only get this one chance - you'll be dead for a long, long time. Be alive now. Make it count. You matter!
I absolutely love this song. I'm from England but the line 'Michigan seems like a dream to me now'....hits home. I've been there so many times and I miss the place!
I can't help but smile when I hear this. I can remember the first time I heard this song. I was about 14, and my dad, my sister and her boyfriend were all driving down to Boston from Maine for the weekend. That weekend was incredible, and this song only made it better.
I take it this song was inspired somehow by Jack Kerouac's novel "On The Road." Its a really great book and every time I hear this song I think of it.
@mrdudelz I hadn't thought of Kerouac; interesting observation. If you're in college and taking and American literature class - take it and run w. it. I would further suggest for you "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" and the not as good "Blue Highways". And the best story of all - yours. What is your America, and what dream(s) are you living.
Paul Simon was not just a great songwriter, but a great guitarist as well.
Think of all of the great little signature acoustic riffs that he uses to introduce each song. For example, 00:49, that chord change, he's capable of creating many of those, all memorable, and for so many of his/their songs.
For me, this song is the one where Paul Simon raised himself from being a good if self-conscious poet to breathing inspiration from his experience into works of durable genius. The first gem. "The moon rose over an open field" Robert Frost would have smiled.
@MDBellamy As I understand it, Frost was not above jealousy. You're absolutely right about the "Frostian" image - but, respectfully, I think you might have missed on what seems to pass as Frost's patrician nature. In any event, my response to your observation is totally positive.
Yes, the man was extremely talented. Incredible, beautiful songs. Why is he denied status with Lennon and Dylan? Alot of their stuff doesn't hold up nearly as well.
@sawfish111 I don't know that he is denied that status among the people who know what's going on. You sound like you do. Maybe your friends aren't as wise as you are. Actually, I never understood what Lennon had w.out McCartney. Dylan, on the other hand, is, like Paul Simon, a modern American poet who put their poems to music.
This song came out when I was in grade school. I had friends who had brothers and a sisters in college and they would tell me about their college experiences (PG Rating). The song reminded me of two college lovers on Christmas break experiencing new adventures. I dreamt of being in college and finding a lover , sharing new experiences and getting so emotionally close. This song brings back the memories and feelings as strong as when I first heard it :)
@TheDanimal1st Here's the thing about great poetry, a song like this - it does not exist in one moment in time and in one place. As long as there are kids embarking on the adventure of their life, this song will remain relevant. I hope you found what you wanted. I hope you still have it.
I was brought up on a healthy diet of Simon and Garfunkel and all the Greats... My parents have good taste! This song is a masterpiece, evocative, dream-like. My favourite lines are:
History repeats itself over and over again...I can only hope that I'm still around for the second coming of true musical genius such as this. But the garbage being produced today leads me to believe we're still a long way off from this becoming a reality.
@dadovtwins What about Dave Matthews and R.E.M? True, the latter broke up - but talent is always out there. No one era has any special claim. The problem isn't a dearth of talent, the problem is the grotesque, pandering success of marketing schlock to people who can't or don't want to think. You are not one of them. Keep your eyes open - they're out there waiting for you. And we're waiting for your advice.

Paul Simon, James Taylor, Stevie Wonder, Lennon And McCartney, etc. Songwriters of my generation. What a pity the "songwriters" of today can't produce music with the same poetry, warmth, and soul that these great musicians could.
hi i see there are millions of YouTube comments but please Read anyway. I agree, as long as there are people. There will be talented musicians out there. Unfortunately the music scene has sadly changed. There are no more record stores ( very few). I miss the days when I could go down and pick up the newest release at the local record store. I know I'm being nostalgic but I still prefer those days. Music seemed more important. There's talented musicians that don't even bother to put themselves out there because it's too difficult in the industry now.
@JohnnyJ301 Agreed- But there is more opportunity for an artist than there ever has been. I know this. But the establishment is affraid to break anyone (of a certain quality) right from social media because it is their end. Hang in there.
Music doesn't get any better than this. I know there are talented musicians out there but with Mp3's and music websites ( which have really been the death of music) they don't get to showcase and get out on the scene like Bands and artists from the past. It's really sad to see music in the state it's in now
@JohnnyJ301 Friend, I understand the sentiment, but you don't need a lot of money to make great music. Look at it from the other point of view - the internet gives free exposure to new talent that would never have been possible before. The public's access to music may have changed, but as long as there are people there will be great music. I personally feel that TV 'talent' shows (X-factor and the like) which demand that acts conform to a formulaic sound are far more damaging to music.
this is a real classic.... if you can go for it, listen to the version by yes! it's different! think my fave is "the dangling conversations", which sounds remarkably like "berkley girls" by Paul Simons son........
one of my favourites , i just finished putting bookends , parsley , sage , rosmary and thyme , the sounds of silence , bridge over troubled water , wednesday morning 3am on my ipod , constantly singing this , and my friends keep telling me to put some justin beiber on my ipod , think thats gonna happen? nope..
When one listens to this song, it's so perfectly well written and performed and the ambience is so perfectly defined by the music and the lyrics, that it is like watching a pristine, excellently well made short film.
I remember the first time I heard this song. It was the 4th of July, and my dad, my sister, my brother-in-law and I were driving down to Boston for the fireworks. Great context for the song.
@GirlFromIpanema1966 Of course not !!! What a silly question. This song is sooooooooooooo far out of range of a Canadian kid both where lyrics and voice are concerned. Luckily he's busy with Selena ...
"I'm hungry and aching and I don't know why"....sometimes, it is nice to reminisce...listening to this music takes me back to the late sixties and seventies...I will always cherish those memories and carry the spirit of those times even if "we are but a moment's sunlight fading in the grass"...the very essence of our being lives on. The world was a simpler, kinder, gentler, and more soulful place back then----despite all of the turmoil. We need to step off the treadmill and stop the machine....
@thefreedomlass Sometimes I wish I was born in those times. From time to time, I'm wondering, why is the world now so damn complicated. It seems like it's for almost no reason. But.. I guess I'll never be allowed to get feeling of those times back. Shame
Ah...those days with my friends from Canada tripping down to NYC in the seventies...going onto the New Jersey turnpike while a Simon & Garfunkel set played on the car radio.. NYC was seedier back then but we still loved the place, the people .. the mood of the times but I would not trade it for the much colder material world that exists now. One of my girl friends had family in NYC and lives there now--I -have not seen any of my univ buddies in years but I know that they would not forget...
I find this song so emotionally moving. Last October was driving home from North Carolina, this song came on as we were on the New Jersey Turnpike. I don't know it just makes me almost fierce, a longing for something that escapes definition. Thank you for posting it.
@GirlFromIpanema1966 u dickshit justin beiber could never capture the essence of this i hate to say this but ur fucking stupid i would rather have britney spears sing this rather than his gay mutherfucking ass
@GirlFromIpanema1966 You sholud have been here 8 months ago so you'd say jonas brothers instead.Or even earlier so you'd say hansen.See the point i'm making?
My dad and I were driving the New Jersey Turnpike; I was just 18, and this song came on the radio. My Name is Kathy. Dad's been gone for many years, but this song takes me back and I get to see him again... Thanks Paul and Artie.
@travelingforfun I just read your comment and as a singer and lover of music I think it's great when a piece of music is associated with a lovely memory from our past! So glad this song brings back a special time spent with your Dad. Peace.
@nicodagger its impossible. the fact paul simon even did it, is still a marvel. tunes like this are just further proof that songs are living breathing entities just as we are. you don't exactly go about writing songs like this.
Every year my dad and I go from Virginia to New York for college move-in and vice versa for move-out. He always plays this song once we reach the NJ Turnpike. :)
@Pikanyaasan Cool Dad. If he does that, I am sure he has a lot to say about a lot things. Keep your ears open. You'll learn more than you will from a text book - which is NOT to say you should not study hard. It's a different kind of learning.
Oh, I know how much he has to say. I've definitely learned more from him than I could ever learn by myself and honestly, I don't think I could ever ask for a better dad.
yeah, it was a time when hope was real and peace was at hand...then we elected Nixon, and again...then Reagan. I am a hippy hold out, social worker to the core and living daily to make sure those who fought in VietNam can now come to peace with demons. Long live the Day.
@AntiMatterXD You're far ahead of the curve. You like deep, meaningful lyrics. Listen to Bob Dylan. Read the poetry of Dylan Thomas and Carl Sandburg. Take the leap into the infinite ocean of literature. You're ready!.

Peace.

It's not easy to write a melody like this, a song like this. This is their finest album.
nicodagger 5 months ago 3

@Chiczaro
Oh, I know how much he has to say. I've definitely learned more from him than I could ever learn by myself and honestly, I don't think I could ever ask for a better dad.

Yes. I don't think you could ask for a better dad, in my opinion....that's just me....

yeah, it was a time when hope was real and peace was at hand...then we elected Nixon, and again...then Reagan. I am a hippy hold out, social worker to the core and living daily to make sure those who fought in VietNam can now come to peace with demons. Long live the Day.
