This is the Tomb of King Peter I and his Queen Ines de Castro! King Peter was supposed to marry Constanza in an arranged marriage (for obvious political reasons). Constanza was the daughter Pedro Fernández de Castro, who was a powerful novel from the province of Galicia Spain.
Ines de Castro came to Portugal as a lady of waiting of Constanza, but she and Pedro fell in love. They had 3 children! Ines brothers were Castilian nobles who were close to Prince Pedro. Pedros father, King Afonso IV of Portugal feared the influence that Ines and her brothers had on Pedro.
Ines and her brothers were nobles from Castile and Pedros father wanted Portugal to be an independent kingdom from Castile. Castile is now located in present day Spain. Meanwhile Constanza died of natural causes. Pedro and Ines married in secret, they had 3 children.
Fearing the relationship and secret marriage of Prince Pedro and Ines, Pedros father, King Afonso IV of Portugal , sent 3 men to behead Ines, while Pedro was way on a trip!
After his father died, Peter became King Pedro I of Portugal. Pedro searched for the 3 men his father sent to kill Ines! He caught only 2 of the three.
King Pedro I of Portugal, then ordered the body of Ines to be excavated from her tomb. King Pedro I then ordered that her dead body be dressed in Queens clothing, and be sat in the throne chair next to his to be named Queen of Portugal. Then he also ordered everyone in the court to kiss her dead hand, those who refused were punished.
After Ines died, King Peter was a good King to his people, but he drank a lot to relieve his sadness. Their tombs can be seen in this video. Their tombs are strategically located so that on the resurrection day, their bodies will resurrect to face each other so that theyll live happily ever after in eternity! Not even Shakespeare could come up with such a story. It is a real life story too.
