This song was amazing when I first heard it. It kind of makes you think about why anyone would deserve to be destroyed in such an inhumane and disturbing way.
I don't really understand why people always say, Bowie was so bad in the 80's! Surely, his albums "Tonight" and "Never let me down" were not his best albums. But this song and also "This is not America" are great songs in my opinion! I watched this movie when I was a child and it frightened me. I stell remember it today...
I actually really dislike most of 'Let's Dance and 'Labyrinth', but he did have a gew really great moments, this included, from the 80's that shouldn't be so readily shunned.
@justAnotherJapanese Hi as a country britain didnt suffer a atomic bomb but when the film was based in the mid 1980s there was a lot of paranoia about the atomic bomb and britain being targeted by it. Another good short film you should look up is called "protect and cover" i think and that was a real short film they were getting ready to put on the t.v. in the time.
@tonymontana1974 No problems the shorts i mentioned are called "protect and survive" they were real films made by the goverment in the 1980s that were going to be shown in case of a nuclear attack the other film i would reccomend to you is called "threads" that is a british drama film about what would happen if a nuclear attack happened in this country.
@tonymontana1974 Anther film which probably accurately describes the code red approach to quarantine in the country is "28 weeks later". Should anything of any magnitude occur then isolation and containment followed by extinction if required would almost certainly be the norm
@pianohbc Ive never seen 28 weeks later i saw 28 days later it was allright yeh i liked it up until the zombies started appearing then it got a bit stupid. A good d.v.d. i would reccomend to you is called "charley says" its a british d.v.d. and has about 2 hours worth of 1970s, and 1980,s public information films. All the protect and survive stuff is on there and its quite a good d.v.d.
I watched it as a child as well and I cried because I knew the old couple were doomed but they kept trying to go on despite everything. I still cry whenever I hear this song.
This song is written by Roger Waters, "This is not America" afaik by Pat Metheny. If something from David Bowie in the 80s isn't bad, chances are good it was written by someone else :)
@notanothernick I know this comment is a year old but still, Bowie did wright this song along with Erdal Kizilcay. Roger waters only sang it. This is not america was written by both David Bowie and Pat Metheny
@LadyScreaming its the horrible production that he splathered over everything from lets dance onwards.. this song is a good example-a great song, but way over blown.
Why izent this song more widely out there i,ts crimson, just like the rest of u ,i was a kid and it made a very big inprint on my life!SO sad lump in my throwt, got to go.When the wind blows.
This song is great for opening the film as its heaviness is contrasted by the sweet old people that do everything they have been told to no avail - sound familiar?

Awesome, have a thumbs up :3
Oh and I don't know about you but 'Absolute Beginners' is just dull, and I'm always trying to forget 'Dancing In The Street', ugh...

Yeah they are not favourites of mine either. But it is as you said: he had also some great moments in the 80's.

I am surprised to learn of this film. Japan is the only nation to have suffered atomic bombs.
I feel grateful that Britain produced such a good film.
I was moved by the lyrics of this song.
