  • Proper review this. Well done!

  • got any updates about the knife then?

  • About the leather sheath, after wearing it for some time the knife just gets too loose, I bought the kydex sheath and Im happy again.

  • @butcherer100

    I agree with you.

  • Cool belt buckle, what is that made of?

  • @kingmanted

Red Deer antler. The antler was a gift from a friend on Scotland and I turned it in to a belt buckle

  • @seanmulhall Very cool, thanks for the reply =) Leave nothing to waste my friend.

  • I have a simple D4 stone myself. It does a really good job on my Clipper. I did look at the DC4 but I needed a shapener so didn't have time to save. As for the F1, I wanted one already but nowhere near as much as now after seeing you hammer those nails in with the back.

  • @bbbjug You mean the SC master hunter? In tests F1 do better it seems.

  • I like how its already broken in you know "used". Would you wanna get rid of it?

  • @26uniden

I still use this knife on occasions. Im not ready to sell it yet but I will let you know if I do decide to sell it.

  • @26uniden the knife broke? i dont get it

  • What would you take for your F1 as is?

  • @26uniden

Sorry, I dont understand what you are asking

  • I'm really glad you added the sharpening part. It helped out quite a bit for I'm new to all this and don't know how long it takes to sharpen stainless steel vs carbon steel

  • A knife is so obviously a weapon, it was exploited throughout history because of its profound ability to kill!!!!

And was always used to kill might I add....

Although it is a tool as well.

  • The Fallkniven is a very good knife. I just do not like the fact that Fallkniven is not up front with the fact that their knives are 100% Japenese not Swedish.

  • Imagine my surprise after doing some research on my "Swedish" Falllkniven F1. How wrong I was. The knife is 100% JAPANESE, made by Takefu Special Steel. The inner core is VG10 the outer layer 420J2 steel, the handles are fitter by another Japanese company. Fallkniven is merely a design and marketing house, but their sales catalog certainly makes one think the knives are 100% Swedish. Rather disapointed I am.

  • @175079

I come form the South East of England so that's why you think I sound like a Londoner. Actually my accent is very different from a Cockney.

  • @175079 this is funny, because his breath also smells cockney

  • @bbbjug yeah really, you are probably jelous. Statistics and tests show that fällkniven makes better knifes than Coldsteel.

  • Hi

    Really good review!

The core is a VG-10 steel, and 440 stainless steel on the sides of the blade.

  • really nice review!

  • what grit sand paper can you use? and what,s the advantage of a convex edge over a flat ground edge?

  • @darkarchon777 A convex edge makes for a slightly better chopping edge (in the case of a axe a much better chopping edge) and allows you to carve wood more finely... as for using sandpaper, really any of your metal grinding papers will work, go with 200 to 1000 grit paper

  • My problem is price. I don't believe paying a lot for a knife.

Swiss? Didn't they give us that joke swiss army knife too? What would they know.

  • Don't quote me on this Sean but I believe the inner core is vg-10 (a tool steel) and the lamintion is 440 stainless or similar.

  • great knife, no question, but I don't think the DC4 is very useful. a piece of 1200 grit sandpaper glued to a strip of mousepad is better much better for sharpening convex edges. If you glue that on a thin wooden board and put a piece of leather on the other side for stropping you have the perfect sharpener.

  • i really like that watch what kind is it and how much did u pay and oh is the strap leather

  • @DjSkyfaze

The watch is a cheapy I imported from Hong Kong off Ebay. The strap is one I made from the heel leather off an hiking boot. The strap is plastic.

  • hey, Sean is the plastic sheath going to cause scratching on my knife=?

  • Did I really have to watch a 30 second video before I could watch the review????? YES!

  • @jons4real

I think I have removed all of the video ads from my videos. Its was not something I requested but Google chose to add for them selves. If you see any more please let me know. Thanks

  • @seanmulhall Hey man I'm all about doing what ever you can to make some extra money. Its just that these ads can get annoying. It's cool.

  • @seanmulhall There is another 30 sec video man. One other thing. Wouldn't sharpening that way ruin the convex edge it has? Convex edges are normally stropped on wet and dry sandpaper and then leather strop for the best results.

  • Hey sean you chud go 4 utube partnership you will get paid for makin vids

  • thanks! like always youre insight on the material at hand is superb...... have the best of weeks. I love yure back grounds........Man youre one lucky dude.

  • thank you mate! know please help me to decide if i should get teh dc4 or the spyderco 204mf sharp maker? and what is the difference between the dc4 and dc3!

  • @teyacapan I do not know about the Spyderco 204 but the only difference between the DC3 and DC4 is its size. the DC3 is 3" long and the DC4 is 4" long.

  • @seanmulhall okay mate . youre lots of help.. is the f1 too heavy to use as a neck nife? Do I need a different sheath like kydex to use the f1 as a neck nife? thanks a million for the advise.

  • @teyacapan Do some research on sharpening a convex edge. The sharpmaker would definitely not be a good choice for the Fallkniven F1.

  • hey sean how do i maintain my f1 sharp? excelent review........ and is the plastic sheath a good deal to wear on a fishing ship in alaska?

  • @teyacapan. I generally use the Fallkniven DC4 to hone my knife edge. If its becomes really dull then I use the diamond side and use cirular motions to put a new convex edge on it. The trick to keeping the convex egde is to flew the wrist slightly during the circular motions. Other wise glue some wet and dry paper to an old mouse mat and use that. The soft surface will give you a convex edge.

  • @seanmulhall like always mate youre lots of help...... so do I get the dc4 or dc3 sharpener? and i think i can speak for all of us when are you puting up a vid on how to do the circular motions for the convex edge.... have a nice day here from california im in the desert..........

  • @teyacapan OK, I do have some product review videos to make on sharpening stones so when I make them I'll cover sharpening the convex edge. Thanks

  • FÄLLKNIVEN....

I got one off those :=)

  • mate nice review. out of interest what watch are you wearing?

  • @sean1e100

Just a cheapy hiking watch with compass, altimeter, thermometer, etc. I imported it form Hong Kong years ago. The strap is one I made form leather.

  • I'm stuck between the Fallkniven F1 and the RC-4 any suggestions anyone?

  • Is that the VG10 or 3G model F1?

  • I use a mouse pad and wet dry sandpaper to keep my F1 convexed. Did it with an Arkansas stone and didn't care for the result. It works but using a method more suited to a convex edge is better. To each his own works.

  • does anyone know if a high-carbon steel is harder, or the F1's VG-10 steel is harder? thank you.

  • Nice video. but is that grip plastic?

  • Its rubber. A little too flat in my opinion but this is a great knife. They also sell the full tang blank do you can add you own handle.

  • @seanmulhall Definitely too flat, but that's part of what makes it light. I thought about getting one with micarta grips, but that would make it a fair bit heavier. As for the convex edge, I'm surprised you sharpened it on a stone instead of either a mousepad/sandpaper or a strop....just to keep the edge convexed instead of flattening it out.

  • @Petegrin1 The handle material is Thermorun. Its very grippy when wet.

  • @Petegrin1 Grips called thermorum

  • If you were to keep the all round ULTIMATE knife in case of disaster / survival, what do you recommend ?

  • i have the fällkniven s1

its a great knife, you can do various things with it.

vg10 laminated steel. you can trust this stuff!

and its not so expensive either

  • you know, swedish quality.

volvo is the best car in the world

    fällkniven is the best knife.

  • i love this knife mine goes everywhere with me.Quality.

  • sorry posted that before watching the rest of the video.

however i thought convex sharpening was a bit different than how you did it. but obviously your technique worked. thanks for the video. i think this is the best fallkniven review ive seen and an excellent knife review in general

  • Convex edges - sharpen in a circular motion. With my knives which are already sharp I only need to hone the edge, so a few very light strokes on the ceramic side of the DC4 is fine.

  • any comments on field sharpening a convex edge?

  • ask fällkniven

  • Hi, I great review. I was wondering though if you would be willing to do a detailed review on the F1 3G? I know a lot of people are looking for a vid review on this knife and I think you are 1 of three that could actually do proper review on the knife. Keep it up and hope you consider.

  • nice job

  • that button down sheath looks better than the open-top friction one i got with mine. mine must be an older version.

the bugger has fallen out TWICE - luckily not in a lake or something! :) good review

  • dude, start eating! unless you secured food quickly you wouldn't last 24 hours in a survival situation lol

  • First off it's a joke, so lighten up. Second, 3 weeks without food? I'm sure you read that online and it sounds so easy but have you actually experienced it. After 3 days of setting up a camp and no food you tell me if you'd last another 18 days. Get some experience then tell me who the retard is.

  • Experience? After 10years military service in the British Infantry i have a pretty good idea as to what the human body is capable of. And yes, you CAN go 3 weeks without food, altho you will be near death at the end. After the first 5-8 days your body begins to feed upon itself, burning through your body fat then throught your muscles themselves.

    And btw, your the retard.

  • You're still getting upset about this? Ok lets just conclude for your mental sanity that you're the expert on starvation and the human body. As a side note, next time you get into a discussion don't try to gain credibility with unsubstantiated claims and unverifiable military experience; they don't hold much weight on an anonymous service such as YouTube.

  • @JRNY1605 I'm not part of this debate, but your last comment made me laugh. True there is too much d*ck measuring on youtube with no way of verifying if the person is totally full of sh*t

  • maybe your body can go 3 weeks without food, but after 2 weeks I'm pretty sure you'll try to end your life, cutting out the agony

  • Maybe, I guess that would come down to the induviduals mental strength and will to live.

  • exactly

  • Hello bushcrafters, hello sean, keep the videos coming please they are helpfull, when your next off to buy another knife or axe, spare a momment for your fans, and buy a microphone instead because its difficult to hear you at times. I too never see a knife as a weapon, where do the kids get it from? they need a hoby.

    cheers

  • To be fair, I'm a "kid" (15, still could be considered a kid) and I totally agree, there are too many stupid young people, who go around stabbing each other, I personally see the Knife as a tool first, weapon second, because I do condone a knife for self defense, but I wish people wouldn't use them so offensively, because it gives knives, and all young people, a bad image

  • Stainless steels like VG10 aren't good choices for hard use. Carbon is much better for hard use. Check out BLUNTRUTH4U's videos on Youtube on his steel choices.

  • I've used the F1 exclusively for 7 years of hard use and never had a problem. There is so much information floating around on steel choices but most people have little to no actual experience.

  • I thought Carbon blades were the weaker ones?

  • WTF are you talking about? Can you be specific about what type of carbon steel you mean? How it was heat treated? What's the blades intended use? The grind? Saying one type of steel is better than another without context is retarded. VG-10 has advantages and disadvantages. So do carbons. If you doubt the sturdiness of VG-10 laminate, YOU should check out the torture test of the A1 on noss4's channel. Not that that has anything to do with how the knife performs in its intended use.

  • The A1 in Noss4's test chipped a lot. If you want to ignore that or attribute the chipping to inappropriate testing more power to ya.

  • Of course it was inappropriate. Thats not the point. You wanted "hard use".

Chipped? You mean when he was batoning it through a concrete paving stone with a hammer? It initially chipped but then stopped chipping. The edge didnt chip beyond beyond repair. The only knife to perform better over all, was a Busse. INFI is the shit That doesnt mean every blade has to be made from INFI, to do its job.

The point is, VG-10 lam can deal with "heavy use". This guy's F1 will be fine in his intended use.

  • every video you do is good i really enjoy them , can i ask where do you do your wilderness camping ? and can you suggest anywhere good in England as i live in central london and im raring to get out into the wild outdoors thx

  • No, i'am from the Netherlands, i bought my F1 mainly on the facts you presented in this review. I took it on a 2 week canoe trip in Sweden, used it a lot and it didnt disappoint. Your reviews are nicely objective and aimed at realistic use. Agree 100% with you that knives are tools, and should be presented as such in a relation to bushcraft, camping and or the outdoors. My compliments to you and your good job.

    Bas

  • Thanks for your comments.

  • i like the a1 better...

  • I've heard its slightly larger. I havent seen one in person but have heard good reviews of it.

  • ya the a1 is biger it has a 6 inch blade compared to the 4 inch on the f1 and its also thicker its 6 mm compared to the f1's 4.5 mm blade and its heaveier at 12oz compared to the f1 6oz and the a1 has a kraton handle. and also the a1blade doesent taper like the f1 does...in my opinion the a1 is better. i like a medium sized knife that can baton like a dream...i also like the ontario rtac 2, and the busse medusa, thoes knives have heft and good choping and batoning strenghts.

  • Hey sean, Just wondering as I'm new to knives, how do you decide,or know, what side of the Sharpening stone to sharpen your knife on, ceramic or diamond.

  • get the fallkniven dc4, its a mix of both

  • No what I meant is does it matter what side you sharpen your knife with? Does each side sharpen them differently and if so how do you decide which side you sharpen your knife with.

  • well if your knife is very dull or chipped then use the diamond side then the ceramic and if you are just touching up the edge only use the ceramic side

  • Diamond for heavy grinding and ceramic for tuochibg up the edge. TBH I only really use the ceramic edge as most of my knives are sharp and just need touching up.

  • I would recommend two knives for self defense and survivial, SOG Vulcan Tanto (VG10 San Mai steel) and Spyderco Woodlander (N690Co Steel).

  • Great review. Totally agree with you. The Fällkniven is probably the best survival knife on the marked.

  • Spyderco Woodlander is freaking sweet for the woods.

  • The sheath does loosen up after a while, so dont depend on the friction fit, keep the secure fastener (the lit) on it!!

  • Does anyone have experience with the S1? Is it compact enough long hiking trips?

  • Does the sharpening stone come when you buy the blade?

  • No they dont but they are not expensive. £13.00

  • I thought it is illegal in the uk to carry a knife larger than 3 inch folding this means no lock or fixed blade is this tru??? the law also says that with a good reason you are alowed to have one??? any sugestions?

  • you can carry any knife with a decent reason, obviously you cant walk around with a Machete on your person, but you could take a proper knife along with you if you were, for isntance, hunting or fishing.

  • yes everything is illegal to carry in the UK! - the answer is just don't draw attention to yourself from the law

  • But how good is it for gäddslem? :)

  • Thats not a v grind its a convex grind use a strop or fine sand papper like 1000 to 2000

  • Sean.. you definitely gave me some food for thought

  • i agree like my 2 pocket knives i use it as a tool but if thats all i have i wil use it as a weapon

  • i recived my f1 3g steel today yipee

  • I just had mine out for a few days doing high country backpacking. I batoned through everything, gutted trout, and cut para cord. Wow! Is an understatement. Barley needed sharpenng when I got home. Worth every dime.

  • On the outside it is a soft steel, this allows the knife to flex without breaking. On the inside is the VG-10. This is the sharp steel for the cutting. There is no carbon steel anywere on the knife.

  • Sorry you are wrong...

VG-10 mean the laminated and not the core like you think.

    External: 420J2 stainless steel

    Core: Hight carbon steel

VG-10 was designed by Takefu Special Steel co.,Ltd, base in Takefu, Fukui Prefecture, Japan

    VG-10 components are

    VG10C:1.0%Cr:15.0%Mo:1.0%V:0.2%Co:1.5%

  • vg-10 is a stainless steel, not a carbon steel. 15%cr that means it is "stainless"

  • totally agree with you man. I've had a lot of knives but this is the only one i'd trust with my life.

the internal steel is so strong it can literally hold my weight without bending.

it's pure function packed into 8 inches.

  • well said sean about the "a Knife is a tool not a weapon" Cheers mate

  • I thank you for your review. It was most helpful. In fact I have learned much from your videos and I appreciate it.

  • Question. I just got my F1 in the mail today and after a brief inspection I have come to the conclusion that the Kydex sheath is not up to my liking. Dont get me wrong, Im glad all my money went into the knife and not the sheath, but does anyone have any links or suggestions where I could find a more usable sheath?

  • good review :)

the F1, my most trusted outdoorscompagnion

  • I have the micarta grip one and I cant speak highly enough about it!! Sure it can chip a little due to the inner core being v hard but so can any knife if you give it some! The only shame is they have put the price right up now! great review

  • Finally a decent F1 review! Thanks. One question, though: aren't you afraid to destroy the convex edge using the DC4? I am hesitant to use the DC4 on my own F1, since in order to maintain the convex edge people generally suggest the "sandpaper on mousepad" method...

  • I am only using the ceramic side to realign the edge. Similar to using a steel. I am using very little pressure and its only on the very edge. To sharpen it I will also the use the wet and dry on a mouse mat but I cant see that being necessary for a while.

  • If you look up on the FK forum at Knifeforums there is an excellent post on "compact sharpener" i believe it's called.

Cheap, field portable strop/ convex sharpener.

I intend on building one myself! - but it seemed like the sort of thing you'd appreciate.

  • Thanks I will look it up.

  • NEVER sharpen a blade towards your groinal area ! If you slip and cut yourself you could bleed to death in minutes.

  • I agree when cutting but I am sharpening on a ceramic stone. I am not even using the full weight of the knife on the stone. There is very little chance of me losing control of the knife. But I do agree not to cut towards yourself if using any pressure.

  • No disrespect , just something I noticed. Been a fan and subscriber of your videos for some time now. I use a Helle Eggen myself , I find it easier to sharpen and a bit cheaper than the F1.

  • I have not seen one of those knives. I will look them up see what the spec is.

  • sean ive gota tell you that its a very very bad idea to cut the flap off the sheath as ive owned one of thses knifes my self for some time and it does get loose with wear and tear ....lose the knife and your knackerd out there as you know its a very important bit of kit ....but on the whole they are a bomb proof and brilliant knife best money i have ever spent and belive me i put it through its paces .

  • Good review dude! I was torn between the Fallkniven and Rat-5 for some time. It was the sheath options and stainless steel materials of the Fallkniven that tipped the scales for me. I just ordered my FallknivenF1. Its rare to come across real quality blades without doing some research beforehand. It pains me to say that I have yet to find one of these real quality knives made in the USA. Oh well, guess thats why I drive a Tacoma..

    Great job again.

  • i got both, and i prefer the F1

  • Mixing length units: 4in and .5cm :). I thought the Brits had gone all metric? Any cheaper knives you're fond of? Any folders of use to you? Enjoy your reviews.

  • I use both metric and imperial equally. Maybe I should have given both measuerments espeically for the european and younger viewers.

As for folders the only one I take out is my Vitorinox Multi Tool and I love that.

  • I have just researched the knife and apparently it is the official survival knife of the Swedish airforce, and has been since 1995. Thanks for the great review.

  • Great Video Sean, keep it up.

    5/5

    Mike.

  • Good review. Interesting sharpening strokes. I'm curious about that sharpening stone. It would seem useful to have a stone that small with two sides. Thanks Silver Fox

  • Im not sure what you mean. It has a diamond side for course grinding and a ceramic side for honing.

  • good review and for four days of abuse it kept a good edge

  • good review, it is a really good survival knife, 5/5

  • Weapons are tools as well.

I do agree that fighting knives aren't necessary for the woods. You'd be better off with a knife designed for the purpose.

  • I have a knife I have desigend purposely for bushcraft. I have been trailing it and have made the video review of it. I am just waiting for my knife maker to get him self organised before I release the video. If you like a large knife then you will deffinately want to buy one of these when you see what it can do. Keep wathcing out for the video.

  • Yeah, I'll watch for the vid.

  • 5/5 review of a 5/5 knife

  • wow nice knife but it is $279.95 here in the US

  • Around £100 in the UK

  • very well done review sean 5/5
