  • _____No, ya see... They had ta use shotguns to blast the RAD SCORPIONS that were attackin'. Ya'd best believe dudes are gonna use SHOTGUNS AND ROCKET LAUNCHERS! What, did'ja think dudes would just go standin' around while nuke-bred freakazoids threatened their settlement and crap? Why don't ya just find a nice warm pool fulla green, glowin' stuff and have a nice, long drink while yer at it? Huh?

  • Stupid lymey bastard focusing on the negative... it was prolly ur stupid white people who littered our sacred lands with your beer bottles. stop leaving ur trash on our land...

  • You folks don't get the British humor. He's poking fun at the fact that Shiprock is a sacred site (it is forbidden to touch the mountain). He appreciates the landscape, but can't help to notice the bottles and shotgun shells. Bottles are common in the UK. Not shells, I'm afraid. And they are free people. No guns required, retards.

  • What a fucking pussy. Shotgun shells are common in America retard.

  • Hey if you ever read the Inheritance series theres a mountain called Helgrind, and the real life inspiration for that was Shiprock!

  • Just be glad the shells were not used on You!

  • question for you?---- wheres your trash go? back into Mother Earth!! stop puttin other peoples down , look @ yourselves first.

  • Thats what your people brought ,thats is what you'll see all over the world!!!!!! not only here---The World!!!!

  • Another whiny European. Sees only the negative. Go back to Londonistan.

  • go out there again, but go at night ; )

  • yeah real sacred.......beer bottles.....trash everywhere

  • Haha Stupid jhons call it sacret and they can't even keep it clean. I say put a cell phone tower on it I'm gettin no bars here XP

  • 1st things 1st. Whites, Euerpeons, and Caucasoids can all suck a fat one. Focker out.

  • Maybe we can use Shiprock to plug the BP's oil gusher. It worked on a volcano!

  • @coyt2012

I'm sure living in the stone age was real bliss for everybody. You honestly think that your ancestors were any better then settlers? You were both a bunch of unenlightened, primitive folk living in darkness. You should let go of the past and look towards the future, otherwise your bitterness will blind you to life's opportunities. Right now, you are just wasting your time being mad about something you can't do anything about. In that sense, you have been defeated.

  • @coyt2012

If it isn't a trailer park, then why are you speaking like a guest on Jerry Springer?

  • the "road"to Shiprock is very rough! 4x4 reccomended you need a Navajo with you to get to it it is amazing to see up close! got pix of friends climbing the base, they look like ants been there several times sunset is very magical

  • I camped over night at the base of shiprock back in 96 until the next morning when we were told to give them 100 dollars or leave. We left but not before we got in a little exploration. The ridge of rock that runs along side of it I was told that legend has that it is the remains of a crashed dragon. I did get a small piece of it and have showed it to many rock & gem specialists. They have no idea what it is. I have rock hounded all over the SW and I have never seen anything like it either.

  • @XPIOLT The navajo name is tse bi ta, which means rock with wings. Sounds like you were on the south side of the wings. It is obviously an igneous rock, but you know that. I have a great geology book. of the area. Just can't find it. Will keep looking

  • You know. It is easy to fly a helicopter over shiprock, and drive through the town, but you have no idea what it means to be Navajo and live in shiprock. We are actually pretty cool kids. I think your video is the superficial chicken shit view. Come visit for real.

  • thats there problem but dont invite the neanderthal in you must understand rocks and caves intrest them keep them away they will start digging.

  • Yes, you drive along the East side of the ridge to the base of the mountain. I was there three weeks ago and did some night time lapses. Maybe I'll post them soon.

  • It is possible to get closer, i just watched a different video of some people almost at the base of Ship Rock.

  • is it possible to get closer to Ship Rock.

  • We passed Ship Rock on the way to Chaco when we went there last year. I really would have liked to have gotten a better look at it. Have you been to Chaco? If not, you should go. It's a beautiful place.

  • Ship Rock was an absolutely beautiful place when I went there on a trip to Northern Arizona (and surrounding areas). We went much closer, though, getting right up to the rock itself to have a closer look. There's no road leading up to it, so it's entirely off-road driving. Sadly, even at the base of the rock, there's way too much graffiti, trash, and just general disrespect towards nature.

  • no there isn't.. unless its been cleaned or something

  • Heh. I drove back home through that area from Colorado to Arizona a couple days ago. That two hour or so stretch was interesting to my eyes. Had lunch on the reservation, but had to be careful with loose dogs running around. (A pitbull!)

  • wats the song?

  • Well it is full of gun carrying mountain hicks. :)

Every sand pit or out-of-the-way remote dead end road was always littered with beer caps, broken bottles, and plenty of shell casings.....Sometimes even an old toilet, washer, or refrigerator. heh

  • That is true i sadly live kinda near where this was taken but i live in a much nicer spot lol :P. Home of moon rovers and the Atomic Bomb i am sure you can guess how nice it is :P

  • Thunderfoot had nothing to worry about really. There are good and bad natives and rednecks, just like there are good and bad urban people.

The shogun shell was pretty funny though. I think that's more a sign of people shooting up the country side than a sign of any real danger. I grew up in Vermont and nearly every third sign on the side of the road had shotgun pellet dents all over it. lol

  • hey thunderf00t you should film with ur plain in more scenic places, no one wants to see the desert, come up to WA. We have some very nice places that would be awesome to have arial footage of :)

  • Says you, There once was a artist who loved painting pussy's or flowers not sure. She lived in north New Mexico i have been to her home a few times now nice place. Oh and i am sure there is much Aerial footage of WA just look if you care i know i don't . And we have the grand Canyon :P.

  • You got your own tittle UAV. I'm jealous.

  • Some people have a deep, abiding respect for the natural beauty that was once this country--and some people don't.

  • sorry doublecharge, i marked u as spam, it was an accident.

  • You should've taken a shell as a souveneir, lol.

  • oh god you idiot trolls shut up about the fucking shotgun shells. jesus who really cares.

  • I'm trying to show up Bluefinger1987 up for the stupid little troll that he is. He really reminds me of Howtheworldworks.

  • Hmm, what are you using to record all that material from above? I mean more specifically...

  • how does his plane look? Is it like a glider? I've been wanting to know this for so long lol.

  • I have traveled the lower 48 extensively (never via ultralight but hey) I have lived on five NdN REZes and in seven states. The Navajo:Dine are a diverse people just like any other race. Thu my travels i have met an extraordinarily diverse amount of people with all types of views and beliefs.Needless to say that is one of the reasons im and atheist. If all different people say there right then i must ask who is right? lest science pwns. TF your welcome in Kansas to a warm meal any time :-)

  • I've drove past shiprock before, it's such an open area.

  • Tf, sometimes you scare the Hell out of your subscribers. Please be careful! :(

    Awesome footage, though.

  • Thunderf00t can/do you fly by watching through the plane's camera?

  • Drinkin' Drivin', and Shootin,!!!

That's what you find just about anywhere in the Big Dusty. No fowl play, just folks having a good ol time, and being a nuisance. I wonder if Thunderfoot realizes that the highway to Shiprock, US-491, was until recently designated US-666? I was bummed when they changed it. Just a little side note. ..

  • I'm so glad I don't live there anymore. I had forgotten how much I hated it there.

By the way, the person in the back of the white truck was the grandmother. They always sit in the back, even in the winter time.

  • TooT is my fucking hero!

  • Woohoo! I know now what one more of the many timezones in the Olson timezone database looks like. Thanks for showing me America/Shiprock, which is on Mountain Time (Navajo version).

  • What is the range on your receiver?

  • Wow, I didn't know that people came all the way from India to worship a rock site and get drunk.

  • Sad the amount of litter, but what a sight. It just shows the people around there are into being out and about maybe even looking at shiprock while drinking instead of wasting their time in a bar.

  • I love thos aerial videos you do. They're perfect with the music.

Are you going to be coming through Arizona?

  • Why are you so firearm phobic Thunderf00t??

  • What circumstances? The shotgun shells had obviously been there for quite some time. There was no one shooting, and the only other person out there was a cop.

  • Although your point is legitimate, it's a complete non-sequitur in relation to old shotgun shells laying on the ground. They're a common sight in open areas of the desert like this. Locals go out with a box of clay-birds, a thrower and 12 gauge and do some target practice.

  • Correlation doesn' equal causation fucktard! Jesustapdancing Christ do you have to have everyting explained to you?? Shotgun shells laying in the middle of the desert doesn't indicate crime!

  • There's no evidence that the beer bottles and shotgun shells were placed there by the same people AND there didn't appear to be more than a box of 25 shells. Both you and Tf00t are making an assumption that the shells were left there by violent people with criinal records. Did it cross your feeble mind that perhaps the shells were left there by off-duty cops?? I've witnessed off-duty cops doing that very thing in 29 Palms. As I said before, finding shells in the desert is a common thing.

  • For the 3rd time, scenes like this are commonplace in the desert. These impromptu shooting sites are as ubiquitous as tumbleweeds and they have nothing to do with criminal activity. I am not making assumptions here, I lived in the desert for several years. I have a mountian of OBSERVATIONAL EVIDENCE to back up my claim, and you have a pile of bullshit that you just pulled clear out of your ass.

I've answered your question repeatedly, quit ignoring my answers BEEOTCH!!

  • If I have a ball and let go of it 99 times, it falls to the ground 99 times. I'm holding the ball for the 100th time and you're claiming that it won't necessarily fall to the ground because all that I have is anecdotal evidence?

    FAIL!

Your argument also fails because the "parties responsible for the mess" aren't even there. Fear about something that isn't even there is the very definition of phobia. Thanks for proving my point for me.

    Are you done trolling yet??

  • Holy fuck you're a stupid troll.

How do you propose that someone who isn't there can cause harm to you WHEN THEY AREN'T THERE TO CAUSE HARM IN THE FIRST PLACE???

    HAHAHAHAHA holy fuck you're stupid!!

  • So you are saying that there is absolutely no chance at all that there might be some one there that would shoot a man traveling alone, to take his money, equipment, stuff and plane?

All you have been saying is that this stuff is common place. I agree that it is common place and usually nothing to worry about.

That does not mean that whenever you see something that is common place that you immediately assume that nothing bad can happen, because most of the time nothing bad happens.

  • cool rock outcroppings, I'm always in awe of what this planet makes of itself for our pleasure, I often think the planet itself is the biggest artist any of us will ever know.

thanks for sharing and keep 'em coming!

  • how big is the range for the air plane?

  • Friends should not let friends drink and shoot shotguns. LOL

  • the thing with the little camera on the airplane was genius. GENIUS!

  • Seeing that white pickup reminds me of No Country For Old Men.

  • Yuppers.

  • Awesome video; awesome diary entry!

  • 1421 the year china discovered america google it

  • my bad... Adams made his self portrait at Monument Valley.

  • ANOTHER EXCELLENT VIDEO

  • "Broken bottles & Shotgun Shells" sounds like the name of a country/western song... I might try to write it myself!

  • I wish I was on holiday....

  • Go to Canyon de Chelly- the last place the Navajos are allowed to sell their wares. You're not too far away. I've talked with them- visited their 'homes'- saw the same kind of debris there. You'll come away with a different view. Schools suck, virtually no healthcare, and practically no way out. My heart aches for them. You probably saw a similar situation around Dinosaur- I believe it'e Ute country. Canyon de Chelly is magnificent- Ansel Adams made his self portrait there.

  • Yup, thats pretty much what I was talking about in the first part of the vid. The Navajo nation is essentially a third world country with the US.

While I think its a very poor state of affairs, when traveling alone I tend to prioritize personal safety over social matters.

But yeah I agree the desert indian nations are in a desperate situation.

  • Hey, are you gonna be driving through White Sands, New Mexico?

  • Comment removed

  • Yes, i agree. With your history of ontheroad mishaps, you are wise to pay attention!

godspeed (in honor of the 40th)

  • It's probably not wise to judge as an outsider the situation of a culture that differs from your own. This area in one of the most rural and isolated areas in the country. I see this kind of stuff in all of the isolated areas I've lived and worked in, reservation land or not. The only crime you documented was littering... oh, and trespassing. Non-Navajos must file with the Tribe for a permit and be escorted by a guide on Navajo Trust Lands. Love the flying though.

  • Its a sacred site for the indians, thats why there are lots of broken bottles and trash.

    LOL!

  • you're a lucky man TF!

  • I fly to that area every week. The Res is a sad place to be.

  • Thunderf00t you should flim "hog back". It is about 5 miles due east of the city of Shiprock.

  • > The disaster, the cars fro[nt] wheel went over one of the monster curbs they have

    > here and was utterly stuck.

    Not *again*!!

Please, next time just fly with Iran air, you will be safer that way. If you are not gonna think about your own safety thats one thing, but please remember how many hundreds of thousands of people depend on your videos ;-)

Please tell us you are gonna drive at sane hours on actual roads or are we gonna have to start praying for your wellbeing?

  • I think pointing out the broken bottles and shells had more to to with the fact that that is no way to treat the land.

I see it all the time when im out and about, people how can't take the time to clean up after their selfs, but instead smash bottles up and make the place look like a hole.

  • I bet they were just throwing bottles in the air and shooting them. Sounds like fun to me.

  • Jingle Bells, Shotgun shells.

    Dude, you are so paranoid.

    1) most crimes occur at night

    2) it's just a trailer park (even if it is a reservation)

    3) If you mind your own business, nobody

    4) Shotgun shells are no big deal out in the country. It's probably just the leavings of some redneck natives who love their beer. They were probably target practicing just for fun.

Take a moment to understand the diversity of gun culture, and you won't be so afraid of some empty shells in the dirt.

  • I'm from the midwest, where you can shoot an AK in your back yard all day and nobody will care.

  • ★★★★★

  • Ha! Spent some time in Socorro myself at NMT. El Cam is nasty hahaha... never cared for it myself. I prefer Socorro Springs... It is funny how Thunderfoot's life in a small way intertwines with ours.. I am beginning to think that all of our lives our intertwined in such a way... hmm

  • Why do the Natives insist on living in reservations? I know it's about Pride, but it just doesn't seem practical.

  • Maybe it's a relatively easy life? Maybe they just don't know how to mingle with everyone else. I'm not quite sure.

  • What are their options? Going to live in some fucking ghetto in the city? I would choose the sun and stars of the great southwest over that shit.

  • Only goes to show we have magnificent desolation down here as well.

  • Very cool! -Max

  • It looked like Thunderf00t was gonna go all No Country For Old Men on that guy in the pickup!

  • Love these vids T-foot =) keep em coming.

  • What does tf00t do for a job?

  • i think hes a teacher.

  • Not sure but in a video he said that he enjoyed that what he did to help science slightly helped human understanding a tiny bit further and that it was his mark on history or something along those lines so i assume he is a scientist... maybe he is a teacher though.

  • I thought he was a scientist too but maybe he also teaches. That might explain why he has time off right now, school year is over.

  • Cool, thanks for the answers guys.

  • Yo, thunderf00t, you should visit the Black Mesa Research Facility whie you're in New Mexico :D

  • Yeah, better keep your crowbar at hand if you're headed out that way, thunderf00t.

    And "Watch out for snakes!"

  • And head crabs.

  • How much have you spent on gas already, whats your mpg?

  • The highway going north past Shiprock used to be Hwy 666, until a few years ago fundamentalists lobbied to have the number changed.

  • Those rock formations remind me of Uluru and Kaja Teidi (Formerly known as Ayers Rock and The Olga's.) in Australia, they too stick up out of the desert and are linked. forming part of the same sedimentary layer that was thrust up in the same heave.

  • Tf00t, you look surprised to see all of the broken bottles and shotgun shells

You're in the middle of the States. There's not much to do out there but drink and shoot guns. Sometimes you shoot at the bottles.

Thats why i don't live in the desert any more.

You should come up to Washington state, and get see the mountains, and our giant ass trees, Massive cedars that are older than Jesus.

I like the heat, but hate the flatness of the desert. I like living in the mountains.

  • If you get shot at Tf00t, just blind them with SCIENCE!

  • Cool sights. You should swing by some of the national parks in southern utah while you are in the area. Arches, Bryce Canyon, and Zion National Parks are all in that area, and they are all gorgeous.

  • Great Shots!

  • Once again another wonderful vid!

Very interesting geography over there, I'm enjoyin watching and reading your little entires!

  • Blessed is the Lord and his rocks! Why else would his rock being in the shape of a ship?!

It must have been carved out by a HUGE load of water which is moving very fast! The flood is undeniable evidence of God's holy might!

Also, the 2nd amendment keeps america free. People should be able to let their shotgun shells land where ever they want.

Its the desert, after all. Who gives a shit about the desert. its not like people live there. Except raving loons like desertphile...

  • desertphile is da man!

  • I really hope that was sarcasm. Its hard to tell, you know.

  • Poe's Law!!

  • He He, bet your arse was twitching a bit when you had the headset on and couldn't see around yourself so well.

  • I grew up in Socorro as well! That's so cool. Hopefully New Mexico was as good to you this time around as it is to me.

Nice vid. I remember very little about my one trip to Ship Rock when I was younger. This brings back the few memories I do have. Thanks for posting and good luck with the rest of your journey!

  • I've been to Shiprock once when I was like 9 years old. My Dad's side of the family is Navajo and lives out in New Mexico. Thanks for posting this!

  • If you're in New Mexico, you could go hang out with Desertphile.

  • wow, it just looks like about 2 in the afternoon, not 8 in the morning

  • I've been to Devils Tower. A very eerie place. The day I went there, some of the roads had been closed due to bush fires. The sky was all smokey and it was very, very hot. The wind blowing around the rock made my ears hear strange sounds. I found that by turning my head this way or that I could/could not hear the insect and bird chirps and so that added to the atmosphere.

Very cool part of the world. I look forward to returning and exploring more.

  • so the devil was responsible for the burning bush after all hehe

  • There's an ice cave south east of gallup , a stop you can make.

  • Another amazing video. I enjoy reading your adventure blogs in the description boxes!

  • Interesting. Do most folk on the East Coast call them "Indians"? I live in the west and I say "Natives". Indians seems pretty silly. We know now they aren't from India.

  • I live in the west and many natives that I know call themselves "indian". They also refer to themselves by their own names in their own languages.....I think that they use "indian" simply because it's a foreign label used by invaders who speak a foreign language....and they know that the invaders will recognize that label.

  • Damn You TF Take me with you next time you do a road trip Lawl or come to Florida =p

  • Thanks again

  • Nice!

  • wicked

  • awesome
