There was a shootout and 2 guys were killed, but it was not the 2 they claimed. Several years ago someone got permission to dig where the 2 bodies were buried and they found bones and if i remember correctly a belt buckle and a few other items. They got dna from the bones and from relatives of the outlaws...no match. Two men were killed in 1908, the bolivians assumed it was butch and sundance since they were reported to be in the area and buried the bodies before a positive id was made.
Trying to "cash in" is right. This Bolivian town's interpretation is false: I don't know what happened to Sundance, perhaps dysentery in prison, but Butch made it back to the USA in 1924 and died in 1937. They did not die like many people think.

the survival myth is just that, a myth. Butch & Sundance died in that dusty little town, People want them to live on, its just wishful thinking.
